gosh
That's probably something 3rd party hooking into the shell. Look at event viewer, try safe mode.-gosh
dinkle
i have heard that some times your anti-virus can lock into the shell and shut windows down. For example our second server had an antivirus as soon as it loads windows crashes. also been told that spyware can be a factor but checked everything. eyeball
does it occur in safe mode as mentioned? that would be the first thing to try.if so then disable everything one by one until you find the culprit, such as antivirus, spyware protection, firewalls, maybe run a rootkit scan since you have virus protection see if that yields any results

cluberti
Download and run ShellExView, and disable all non-Microsoft items listed. Log off to kill explorer.exe, and then log back on to reload explorer without the shell extensions. That might be enough to fix it.
