Lately, my computer's been really choppy. It's lagging a lot and so has the sound. Whenever I try to play music on iTunes or WMP, it sounds like I'm playing a scratched CD. I have a list of programs and I'm wondering if any of these have anything to do with my problem.

The List

  1. Download Power Defragmenter GUI and save it where you can find it easily (Such as the Desktop).
  2. Unzip PowerDefragmenterGUI.zip. Unable to decompress the zip file? You can use IZArc to decompress files with ease.
  3. Download Sysinternals' Contig to the same location you saved Power Defragmenter GUI.
  4. Unzip Contig.zip. Browse into the Contig directory and copy the Contig.exe file into the Power Defragmenter GUI folder. The reason? Power Defragmenter GUI is designed to work extremely well with Sysinternals' Contig.
  5. From the Power Defragmenter GUI directory, double click the Power Defragmenter GUI.exe file.
  6. Click Next, then select PowerMode Disk Defragmentation and click next. The Contig window will open as your hard drive is defragmented. Once Contig completes, the Windows Disk Defragmenter will open in the command line window and defrag your hard drive as well, putting things in the order it sees best fit for your computer. When everything is complete, Power Defragmenter GUI will tell you that it has completed all of its work. You can click Quit/Finish to exit the program.

NOTE: This process can take anywhere from minutes to hours! It is best to let the defragmentation process complete for optimal performance. If need be, let this run overnight.

The process is all automated and will help your system greatly.

It may also help to defrag your pagefile with PageDefrag which is also by SysInternals.

Reducing the number of items in your Startup is also very beneficial, as it removes a lot of unnecessary programs that may be running when you don't need them at all. You can post a HijackThis log if you wish and we can also check for malware.

Well I tried defraging like you said, Tarun, but it didn't seem to work =( Still getting the same choppy-like performance. Any other suggestions?

P.S. here's what I got from HijackThis:

Then I would remove almost everything from the:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Run registry path

You also have a lot of unneeded services running. I would turn most of them to start Manual.

I also suggest you to run Spybot Search & Destroy

This is only my opinion, but you asked for help:)

Yahoo Messenger is a legit application that I use on a daily basis and never encountered any issues...

Also, can you attach the log file itself rather than posting it's contents? Those long posts make this thread a pain to read, honestly.

As others have said, it's not so much about the number of installed progs as the number of running/autostarting progs.

You definitely have way too many running/autostarting progs. Autoruns is a great prog to see and disable certain autostarting progs, but be careful because you can mess up quite a bit if you uncheck the wrong things (the Logon tab is what you want).

Try hitting Ctrl+Shift+Esc simultaneously and check the number of processes, with XP you actually only need about 13-25.

Every single process uses some resources, it's like always carrying a heavy backpack with stuff you don't need most of the time.

You should run Spybot S&D and remove everything it finds (geezery already said this, I know).

Updating the drivers may also help a tiny bit.

Untick "Show hotfixes" to hide all of them, which makes the list easier to read.

Edit: Typos.

StartUpLite is nice since it just lists those unnecessary progs and not all autostarting progs/services/.dlls.

Also, I tried Startuplite and it gave me the option of disabling or removing about 5 or 6 processes. Does that mean I need everything else?
