cucolinwin Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 We are trying to install SP2 for Win Server 2003. Every time we get the error message indicated at the message title. I also downloaded the sp2 .exe file to run it manually and got:"The Service Pack 2 h:\.....\i386\update\update.inf is not correct"I also downloaded the .iso image and got the same error. I look at my event log:The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID{61738644-F196-11D0-9953-00C04FD919C1}to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.I followed their advice, but still keep getting same error. thanks
eyeball Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 i know its stupid and basic but have you tried rebooting the server, checking all of the services are running and then trying it again? p.s also temporarily disable Antivirus too might be a good ideathanks
cucolinwin Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 I'm trying that at this moment...thanks. Will let you know the outcome.
cucolinwin Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 It failed again! Same error. I was reading around and took a look at my WindowsUpdate.log & svcpack.log files and found:svcpack.logThe Service Pack 2 c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\456b2012d88fef6ab6d7be85fa66de38\update\update.inf file is not correct.13.454: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf00cWindowsUpdate.log 524 11b0 DnldMgr * Queueing update for download handler request generation.2007-08-07 13:10:22:109 524 11b0 DnldMgr Generating download request for update {47E1EACE-2A19-4EAF-B270-E7C04345134B}.1022007-08-07 13:10:22:343 524 11b0 Handler Windows Patch download for UpdateId = {47E1EACE-2A19-4EAF-B270-E7C04345134B}: selected action is download express (delta).2007-08-07 13:10:30:484 524 11b0 DnldMgr *********** DnldMgr: New download job [updateId = {47E1EACE-2A19-4EAF-B270-E7C04345134B}.102] ***********2007-08-07 13:10:31:062 524 11b0 DnldMgr * BITS job initialized, JobId = {E328455D-0711-41E7-932F-D4EBBAED808F}2007-08-07 13:10:31:359 524 11b0 DnldMgr * Downloading from http://au.download.windowsupdate.com/msdow...e25b8ce8690.psf to C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\9b4bd89aab1ddf9cb622da7589648f0f\download\WindowsServer2003-KB926122-x86-ENU.psf.blob (6 subranges).I'm NOT sure what to do anymore. thanks
eyeball Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 what happens if you download the distributable package and run that? same thing?
cluberti Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 What happens if you grant the Network Service account local activation permissions on the following 2 DCOM components (if they exist):- IIS Admin Service- IIS WAMREGYou can see these by running "dcomcnfg", and browsing Component Services > Computers > My Computer > DCOM Config
cucolinwin Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 I still get:The following Updates were not installed:Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (32-bit x86)
gosh Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 dl the full 200~ meg file and install it locally-gosh
eyeball Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 (edited) Cluberti, how did you know that those 2 dcom components need those rights? Edited August 7, 2007 by eyeball
nmX.Memnoch Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 My guess would be from the CLSID's mentioned.
cluberti Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Cluberti, how did you know that those 2 dcom components need those rights? My guess would be from the CLSID's mentioned. Every COM object has a CLSID. I mentioned both because they're generally intertwined, and when that message occurs one or both are missing permissions. I don't think it'll fix the SP2 not installing issue, but it'll fix the COM errors. As to SP2 not installing, can the install be attempted in safe mode? Do we get the same results there, or does it work? I also second downloading the whole thing from the microsoft.com/downloads site, rather than trying to use the windows update binaries.
eyeball Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Ok Cluberti, sorry to go on, but from those CLSID's mentioned in the windowsupdate.log you knew that they were those 2 paticular dcom components? or is there a reference somewhere that i can look to?thanksP.S cucolinwin let us know how your getting on with it

Same overall type of error is known to occur when using Windows Update to apply hotfixes. You're required to download them manually and install each one by hand in the order that the hotfixes post in the HFSLIP forum list them it or slipstream them and try again. cucolinwin Posted August 8, 2007 Author Posted August 8, 2007 I tried to manually download the SP2 as I indicated in my first post. I'm still getting the same error:"The Service Pack 2 h:\.....\i386\update\update.inf is not correct"I was able to download and install other updates NOT SP2. What should be the next step? Is there a way to contact Microsoft about this issue? thanks
