This may be a stupid/lame question since I am not so familiar about proxies. What actually happens when I configure my internet connection through a random proxy server. (in IE using properties->connections->LAN Settings->Proxy server)?? Specially in the case while downloading something. My idea is, proxy is kind of a middle-man. So it would be something like this. Say my computer is "A" and I am accessing a website whose server is "B". And I am using the internet connection from an ISP named "X". There is somewhere a proxy server whose server is "C" and who uses the internet connection from an ISP named "Y" Case 1: During a direct connection. "A" accesses "B" directly using the connection from "X" utilizing "X"'s bandwidth. Case 2: During a connection though a proxy server named "C" "A" accesses "B" but through "C". So the connection goes like "A" to "C" and then "C" to "B". Now "A" connects to "C" using the internet connection from ISP "X", hence utilizing "X"'s bandwidth. But when the connection occurs from "C" to "B" does it use the connection of the ISP "Y"?? So when I am downloading something using the proxy server "C" am I utilizing the resources of the internet connection of "C"?? Am I utilizing the bandwidth of "C"'s internet connection "Y"??

Let me try this.... How do I check if the bootcode is gone??

Hmm.....thats right. Now since you have mentioned, just for the sake of knowledge how do you "zero out any bootcode"?? And as you said this is not the same as erasing the MBR.......right??

ponch, So are you saying that wiping the MBR is equal to wiping the partition?? I just hate unnecessary things (things which lie there never to be used at all) in my computer. Hence I wanted to get rid of that MBR on those two disks. [i have in fact slipstreamed my Widows to 130MB with just the things that I need and got rid of all unnecessary junk]

Plz correct me if I am wrong. Each Hard Disk has its own MBR..right?? The only MBR my computer ever utilizes is the one in Disk 0. Now since I am not using Disk 1 and Disk 2 to boot any kind of OS (s), I can safely wipe out the MBR on those two Disks.

McTavish, Thanks for your prompt reply. Glad to hear that "it will make no difference to you what-so-ever if they are marked active or not". Actually that would have been my next question. I got the answer even before I asked it. Thanks a lot. No, there is no particular reason to remove the active flag. Just felt kind of uncomfortable with three active partitions in my PC, since I hadn't heard your reply before.

I have three hard disks with two partitions in one of them. I use WinXP Pro only. I want to know what are advantages or disadvantages in terms of performance of Windows if I format a particular partition as "primary" as opposed to "logical" Let me explain my question through two screenshots with two different cases (which are marked with red boundaries). This is about the particular partition H:. In Case 1 H: is formatted as Primary and in Case 2 H: is formatted as Logical. Case 1 (H: is Primary) Case 2 (H: is Logical) Now what I want to know is in what way is Case 1 advantageous over Case 2 and vice versa?? Again by "advantage" I mean performance of Windows. Also you can see from the screenshot that Disk 2 and Disk 3 are set as active. How do I make them non-active without having to format them??

I am facing the same problem. I use Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition v10.0.2.2000. I have kept Task Scheduler and Terminal Services both intact, but still it wont even install. I am using Windows XP SP2 (nlited version)

Any ideas folks. I am still stuck on the same old problem.

Hi AltTeo, Thanks for your suggestion. Could you please explain a little more (in not so technical language) what do you want me try out. I do a Web-Install of Symantec. It is provided by my University. Hence I do not have a CD. There is only one folder that gets downloaded to my temp directory with some 10 files in it along with the Setup.exe file.

The installation goes on till the end and then just at the point of finish it uninstalls itself and says to try installing it again. However, it seems Symantec Live Update is intalled though (there is a folder in Program files named Symantec Live Update with all the files in it). I am using Windows XP SP2 (nlited version)
