  1. I also face this problem quite a few times. I plug in the USB drive and do my work and then I remove it from the taskbar. But then I realize that there is still some more work to be done from the USB drive. So I have to pull it out and plug that in again to access the USB drive. This is annoying becoz I have to reach behind the CPU and do the plgging and unplugging. Is there a way to reconnect the USB drive without installing any additional software (I mean by utilizing Windows native tools/commands)?? (PS: I don't have permission to install any additional software)
  2. I would like to assign a numerical value to a text in Excel. For example I have 3 columns with values in them as 2, OUT, 3. Now what I want is to assign a numerical value to OUT (say OUT=5) so that when I sum all the three columns it gives me 10 and not the usual "#VALUE!" Is this possible at all?? If so then how to do it??
  3. Thanks a lot to jcarle & phkninja for the quick answers. The link explained that nicely in layman terms. What I was wondering from the anwser in the link is ........say I have a 3 foot long "straight" cable carrying signals through it. Now it would emit radially as well as absorb EM waves all along the length of the cable. Now the ferrite core acts as a flux sponge. So just a small core at one end of the cable absorbs all the EM waves coming from the whole length of the cable??
  4. Take a look at these photos of USB and other cables You will notice a thick plastic cylinder on the cables. (somtimes with the cable making one twist around it...2nd and 4th pic) What is that?? What is the purpose of that??
  5. Whenever I left click on audio files in any browser (IE or FF or Opera) the file starts to play in Windows Media Player. Before it used to give a pop-up "save as" dialogue box to select either to open it or save it (similar to the right click "save as" dialogue box). Now suddenly thats gone. What has gone wrong??
  6. yep you are right.....thats the one Its a DOS bootable CD
  7. Which is the other type?? So does the DOS based type have all the applications command based?? Because if you look at the list of applications most of them are originally GUI based.
  8. Ok. There is a famous DOS bootable CD (warez) available in the internet with tons of applications in it. (you must be knowing abt it) So are all those applications command based?? Also I have heard about PE Builder. Will that help me anyway??
  9. So there aren't any sotftwares which can do the task, without the knowledge programming knowledge??
  10. Thanks phkninja for your comments. Ok I got that. Say I want to make a bootable partitionmagic CD, which doesn't require an OS (don't ask me why since I already have one, I just want to learn) and why partitionmagic.....you know why How do I go about it?? Also how would one determine which softwares require an OS to function and which ones don't??
  11. I see. The bootable partitionmagic iso is just ~2MB in size. Its sounds amazing to include everything in that small size!! So it seems that really a very minimal amount of OS code is needed to run that application. Anyways so I guess its not possible to make a bootable software CD with just the setup.exe. Ok. If I want to make an OS bootable CD with a software(s) in it then which option is better (1) a DOS bootable CD or (2) Windows bootable CD. What I think is a DOS bootable CD can also run a GUI based application.....right?? So why would I go to make a Windows bootable CD the iso of which would be larger in size and hence would take a lot of space in the CD and also would take more time to boot as comapred to a DOS bootable CD. Am I right?? Please comment.
  12. Thanks jaclaz for your reply. No I am not talking about AUTORUN. Why should a bootable software CD need windows for it to operate?? I have a bootable partionmagic CD which has nothing but partionmagic in it. Hence when I insert the CD and restart the computer and it boots up with partitionmagic (with the GUI and mouse working, as if it was running in Windows) What I want to know is....how is such a type of bootable CD made?? Can I make one with just having the setup.exe of the software or do I need all the dlls and etc etc that is contained in the setup.exe??
  13. (1) I want to make a bootable CD of a software. I just have only the setup.exe of the software. (This can be any software) How can I go about it?? Is it possible at all just with the setup.exe?? I do not want to create a bootable Windows CD but just a bootable CD of the particular software. (2) If the first thing is possible then how do I add more than one software and get a menu based bootable CD. (again not a bootable Windows CD)
  14. In Windows you can right click on "My Computer" and select Properties where it will give the information about the Windows version, build etc. What is the corresponding way to do this in any Linux distro??
  15. I guess you could try a system information tool like SIW or AIDA32
  16. Sometimes some applications download some stuff automatically from the web and install it. You don't have a specific control over it. I never get to know where these get downloaded & installed. Examples include codecs download by media players and Windows updates. I am looking for something that will interrupt this automatic download and ask me the following:- Do I want to download it or not If yes, where do I want to download it (or tell me the default download location) And then if I want to install it or not Is there a tweak in windows that can do it?? If not is there a 3rd party application that can do it (preferably freeware)?? (I don't wish to disable the option to download these automatically but rather would like to know where things are actually going) Thanks
  17. Not sure though, but is this what you are looking for?? Treewalk http://ntcanuck.com/
  18. McTavish, I read the whole help file of proxomitron for the header thing. I did the changes as you said and put a dummy IP, and I can see that dummy IP in the "HTTP message log" by "X-Forwarded-For: So now the server of the website I am viewing will see that I am accessing it through that dummy IP?? I think I am not done yet....right? becoz whois still figures out my real IP. So in the next step, I should connect an anonymous proxy thorugh proxomitron to hide my IP completely??
  19. The A4proxy help file says as follows:- Hence I guess it does support secure http.... I did everything exactly as stated in the A4proxy manual/help including setting up the browser for local proxy (thats the first thing I did). Even though the browser won't connect to the net.
  20. Thanks again McTavish & LLXX. Well A4proxy seemed very simple to use. I tried but failed it to make it work. I did exactly what was stated in the help pages but was not be able to connect to the internet with A4proxy in the first place. I tried all the troubleshooting in the help files but failed. Any ideas?? As far as proxymitron goes I tried that too and was able to connect to the internet, but was not sure how to
  21. Thanks McTavish & LLXX. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=88851&hl= looked a bit technical too me. I will have to read about these before I could actually carry it out on my computer. But if you guys could show me how to do it, that will be quicker.
  22. Thanks a lot McTavish for that link. Wow.....that was enlightening and indeed very scary. But as you said it may be hyped a little bit since it was like an advertisement for that company. But anyways I guess whatever it talked about made sense. I am not going to use any proxies henceforth. Now I am sure most of the working proxies that I find listed on websites like http://www.proxycn.net http://www.xroxy.com/ http://nntime.com/ etc, etc are open. And when I checked the Whois of these working proxies most of them turned out to be universities and govt organizations. So may be these are honeyspots. Better not to fall in any of these spots either hacker or honey.
  23. Wow never knew that.... I have never used a proxy before (never needed to use it). Used it for the first time yesterday just to get a feel of it. Let me tell what happened. I took a random proxy from the net and started to download a Linux distro (~700MB). (Since I was not aware that I was actually utilizing their bandwidth so I took the liberty to download ~700MB) The download continued till the half of it and then stopped. I tried to start the download again but it would say "not able to connect". So to check it I tried to download it with direct connection. It downloaded completely. The proxy server was not down, since it would let me surf the net. But it wouldn't let me download henceforth. So all these above questions came to my mind, and for the sake of getting my fundamentals right I am asking these questions. Shortly after this happened I read all I could about proxies including Tor. Now I think that the proxy server might not be free to use. So it got p***ed off since I was utilizing a lot of their bandwidth and hence it blocked downloading (may be specifically for me or my IP). Could this have happened??
  24. Hey TAiN, One more question. The free proxy lists (whether anonymous or transparent) you get when you search in the net......are they really free to be used as proxies.......I mean do I have their consent to use them?? This is because since I am utilizing their resources/bandwitdh. (Most of them are govt institutions, universities, big ISP's.)
  25. Thank you very much TAiN, That was exactly the answer I was looking for.
