  1. Downloaded the newest updates of TC's list and made a new HFSLiped XP SP2 CD. When I run Microsoft Update the following screens appear: then "searching the most recent windows update software" and then: Didn't grab the actual file that got downloaded. I remember from earlier HFLIPed XP CDs, that Windows update ran directly without the need of such an update. Do I miss a certain update or is this a general behaviour of windows update now? Some licence stuff?
  2. Big thanks for this thread! It would defenitely deserve to be sticky in my opinion - though don't know if this is intendend by TC
  3. I got the same message just now. Did not include KB867801 but have included KB918899. After getting the message with mbsa I entered winows update (web) and I did not get the KB867801 in the update list. Then I started msbsa2 again and surprise KB867801 was no longer missing. Strange...
  4. Using hfslip-1.0b-61014b there seems to be a problem slipstreaming DX9 (german w2k SP4). Trying to run dxdiag results in a hang of dxdiag when running DirectShow tests. On the next run of dxdiag there appears a dialog asking if directshow tests should be skipped because in the last run these tests crashed. Anyway, after installing directx_oct2006_redist the problem goes away. BB HFSLIP_LOG.txt

    Code line error

Hi wela, I have noticed the same problem: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...p;st=1005 In your case KB923191 installed without any problems or is it missing as well?
  6. Hi, I think I've found a problem with hfslip-1.0b-61013a. I use w2k SP4 german. During setup there appears a screen "KB917008 Setup ... Options ... " and an OK button on the bottom. I've put KB917008 in the HF dir, is that correct? I've read that this update is not slipstreamed, does it have to go in another folder? After setup was finished I did a quick run of MSBSA 2.0 and it tells me KB917008 and KB923191 are missing. KB923191 is definitely in my HF dir... BB
  7. Thanks for the replies! @ Super-Magician: Yes it's KB902344 and others I'm referring - good to know they are supported. The optional Updates I only use for XP. For w2k I use the ones that The Guy and Tomcat have listed. If I'm right then, these hotfixes should be the replaced once since April 06: WindowsMedia10-KB911565-v2-x86.exe WindowsXP-KB885250-x86.exe WindowsXP-KB896422-x86.exe WindowsXP-KB902400-x86.exe WindowsXP-KB912812-x86.exe WindowsXP-KB913446-x86.exe scriptde.exe
  8. I need a new HFSIPed install CD every 4-5 Moths. So I back up my unprocessed HFSLIP directory, so I can restore it later and put in the new hotfixes and updates. I also use optional non critical updates, that are not found in the lists of Tomcat and The Guy. So now I put in the new critical HFs and do not know which one have been replaced and which one are optional hotfixes. So I do compare my HF folder with the dynamic list of TC using an excel sheet and then checking the ones only I have, if they are optional or replaced. What would be much eaysier, if there would be a list of updates that have been replaced. I only would need to check my HF folder and remove the Hotfixes that the "replaced list" contains. From April 06 - September 06 for XP these should be the replaced Hotfixes: WindowsMedia10-KB911565-v2-x86.exe WindowsXP-KB885250-x86.exe WindowsXP-KB896422-x86.exe WindowsXP-KB902400-x86.exe WindowsXP-KB912812-x86.exe WindowsXP-KB913446-x86.exe scriptde.exe Ideally the list would also contain the month/year the individual HF was repleaced and the new hotfix. Btw: found a list of recommended optional updates: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=496637 Are some of these supported in HFSLIP? WMP10 ones with intl rather not?
  9. Hi zwiebug222! The icl Files go into HFEXPERT. The 7z file contains a folder structure. Unzip the 7z file and put the icl files that are inside WINNT into HFEXPERT\WIN (explorer.icl). The rest into HFEXPERT\WIN\SYSTEM32. Finally unzip the reg.7z and put the reg file from the ForHFSLIP folder into HFSVCPACK. The icl Files inside Program Files can be copied to the corresponding folders after install. The reg files for these can also only be aplied after install. Get the latest icl+reg files under: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=74641 This topic is old. Please use this other topic instead: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=74641
  10. Here is my updated set of XP icons for w2k + registry files I promised to make in this thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=69221 (Thread has some additional info and a screenshot) * Here is the updated icl set with some new extra icons: iclXP.7z The reg files are attached. *Here is the link to Electrician's silent installer hosted by TaiN: Silent installer *Here is a link to NT4 icons (fdv) and good info for those who are interested in ressource hacked icons (Kramy): NT4 icons / ressource hacking _______________ Some new icl files are more useful (sendmail - context menu) than others (ntbackup). Most registry entries do not use environment variables (like %WinDir%) they use eg. C:\Winnt\System32. So if one uses different locations the regfiles have do be adapted. That's for my attatched reg files only. The installer uses environment variables! The icl files that go into subfolders of Program Files I did not include into the HFSLIP reg version. It seems that including explorer&internetsettingsXP.reg into the HFSLIP reg has no effect. It has to be applied after user logon. It is the small icon in the explorer status bar and one icon in internet settings - security. Everyone is welcome to add new icl files / reg files for differnt systems, updates and stuff related to icons + HFSLIP (cmd files...) here in this thread. Reg.7z
  11. If you just want to put icons in one file together, why don't use icl files (icon librarys)? I used this to get some XP icons into w2k. You can adress icons within an icl file like it's done for a dll. (Well dlls suppot 2 methods, the icls just one). IconLover is a good program to create icl files
  12. Vulnerabilities in Macromedia Flash Player from Adobe Could Allow Remote Code Execution (913433) The HF contains the following files: KB913433.CAT KB913433.INF GENINST.EXE INSTALL_FP6_WU.EXE GENUINST.EXE HFSLIP says could not find file. Link: MS06-020
  13. I used HFSLIP_60430a to generate a XP SP2 + WMP10 setup CD with all updates that Tomcat76 has got listed. After finishing installing XP the system log says that there was a setup error and to look into setuperr.log in the windows dir. The log says something like that the files drmclien.dll drmstor.dll are not correctly signed by microsoft. Is this issue known or even already solved?

    W2k vs Xp

I'm an XP hater and avoided it in every way. But now it seems that I will have to use XP on one PC. I am building myself a media center / HT PC. Started this little project because the local cable tv provider is beginning to reduce analogue channels and putting in more and more digital ones (DVB-C). Capturing TV with some digital settop boxes is not so good because with most of them you'd have to grab an analogue out signal from the box and then re digitize it - not quite good (exception are some boxes with harddisk where you can grab the files from the hd afterwards). So I thought build yourself a HTPC. Now from the hardware side I got everything more or less running. Software I was pretending to use w2k as system. I evaluated some htpc software (sceneo tvcentral...). Windows mce I really don't want to use. Then I found Media Portal (MP) - an open source HTPC software that I tried and like a lot. Got MP running under w2k fine except the DVB-C television. Well got it running after registering some XP files but running in a way that's not quite usable. So now I'm playing around with XP - where the TV runs OK. But I find XP really lame. I hate it when XP always tries to tell me what I should do (PostBootReminders and so on) - I'm a power user and I know what I want to do... XP maybe is fine for a newbie or normal user, but for a power user it's an insult. I'm not wondering why power users switch to linux since ms is really neglecting power users. For things where I needed two clicks under w2k now I need 4 under XP - really great! Now I'm investigating how to get rid of most of the useless stuff right on install - at least a lot can be done by registry settings, that can be included in hfslip (turning off some useless services, use classic desktop/start menu from the first start and so on). Yea and finally this PC will run only one software - Media Portal - so I will survive it. This little project now is coming to it's final stages and I have to say that a well configured HTPC is realy a great thing for the living room.
  15. I've been reading trough the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-014 and found out that there are different MDAC versions for W2k. I've found this: MDAC Component Checker Component Checker I used the component checker to find out the mdac version that runs on my w2k. There: MDAC Update for W2k I've found an update to MDAC 2.8 Service Pack 1 for w2k Now my question is if it would be possible to hfslip this mdac update into w2k including the appropriate KB911562?
  16. Thanks for the info! BTW replacing the old file with the new one on my existing installation already did the job. (Regserver gave an error when trying to unregister so I think it worked fine without.) Dxdiag isn't complaining any more now.
  17. After installing w2k with hfsliped DX9 (and all other updates) dxdiag tells me that msdmo.dll is an old version file (4.90.2490000) and that I should reinstall DX9. I even did a test install with this setup CD on my test PC to see if the problem is caused by an incomplete hfslip of DX9. After finishing setup and running dxdiag the problem was the same. Is this problem gone with newer versions of hfslip? I do not want to reinstall the Pentium M Desktop system I set up with this w2k CD only because of this file having the wrong version. Is the only way to get rid of the problem to reinstall DX9 on this system or is there another way to replace this file with a newer version? eg. unregister old file, replace old file with new one and register new file? This file can also be found in the RegisteredPackages folder.
  18. @januh: Not all icons are replacable by a registry entry. Some can only be replaced if you do a "ressource hack" These icons in the control panel are integrated into the .cpl files that are located in Winnt\System32 You need to open these with a ressource editor and change the icons there directly. Probably some more things are necessary to not get in trouble with windows file protection. I've discovered some more small things and will post a general update as soon as I have got some time. The past weeks and the next weeks I had/have little time.
  19. With HFSLIP_60306 and 60305 there are errors during filecopy (after formating) The following files can't be found: wuapi.dll, euauclt1.exe, wuaueng1.dll, wucltui.dll (using english version) With HFSLIP_60225 everything works fine. OT: After installing Office2003 windows update says the following windows update is missing: Windows-KB833407-x86 If it's hflsiped before, windows update does not complain. Maybe it should be included as optional update in the w2k update list?
  20. Just if someone is interested... To extract the icons I used: XN Resource Editor A program that can generate icl files is for example: IconLover I removed the 32 bit versions of the icons. I'm not sure but I think w2k does not support them and I could see little difference between the 256 color version and the 32 bit version. The files are smaller as well. The ",-120" icon adressing that works with .exe/.dll/.cpl does not seem to work with the icl files. (That would be the some sort of name of the icons). The icl files have to be adressed start counting with 0 upward. So the order you put the icons into the icl file is important. I prefer having icl files over separate icons - it's more compact and it's easier to change the reg entires.
  21. I'll put this file online only 2 or 3 days - maybe someone can host it for me? shell32.7z
  22. So here come the registry files. The ForHFSLIP folder contains the reg file if you want to HFSLIP the icons. It does not contain any current_user entrys - I think if it's hfsliped from the start, only hkey_local_machine entrys are necessary - the ones in current_user are generated after that from the hkey_local_machine ones - at least I think - have to do some testing on that. The ForInstalled folder contains the reg files if you want to change the icons on an already installed windows. The BackToOldIcons subfolder contains reg files to switch back to the old icons. The icl files have to go into the same folder the corresponding .exe/.dll/.cpl file is. Do the things on your own risk. I've tested it a bit and for me it works fine. If you want to go sure that nothing goes wrong you could use an "unistaller" eg. easyclean - now ashampoo uninstaller that can register all the changes that happened to the registry and can do an an undo afterwards. You can see the changes if you log off and on or deactivate/activate the show icons in all possible colors in display properties. In the next post I'll try to post the shell32.icl Reg.7z
  23. I will share the files here, but the shell32.7z that's most imortant got 399kB and seems to be to big to attach. Some explanation: What I did more or less is to scan the registry for DefaultIcon entries noted the file names and compared the XP icons of these files to the 2k ones. XP files that contained the same icons as the 2k ones, I excluded. This first package I'll try to share contains the most important files. I started prepairing some more files that will only give marginal to enhancement (icons for some exotic file extensions and some other things) - these are not ready yet. This post contains the most important icl files minus the shell32.icl In the next post I will include the registry files. Note: I think that it's not possible to change all the icons without resource hacking. But a big part is possible without. Yea an the heck - even XP contains some old style icons. Some more icons could be changed by changing some shortcut icons - but that's then another thing... icl1.7z
  24. This topic is old. Please use this other topic instead: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=74641 I have extracted some XP icons and put them into icl files (icon library files). I've made a reg file, so the icons get changed (eg. from shell32.dll to shell32.icl). The shell32.icl for example contains all the shell32 icons from windows xp. In a windows 2000 that's already installed, my reg file + icl files work very well and I get a nicer look under w2k. (I do really prefer the classic skin under XP though I think some XP icons look nicer than the old w2k ones. I prefer w2k over XP, so that's why I want some newer icons under w2k) Now my question is how I could integrate these icl files into a install CD? Most icl files have to be copied to the system32 folder, some to the winnt folder. Would it work if I put the files into HFEXPERT or do I have to make a silent installer for that? (Maybe some sort of tomcat76s silent installers - like the one that integrates the classic skin for wmp9)
  25. It seems that the Microsoft Update engine is HFSLIPed just fine. When entering the Microsoft Update Site the "install message" does not appear any more! Thanx
