  1. your right Crahak and given the choice i would use a proper VPN, but in this case something simple may be better.

However how would your VPN solution deal with all the data being transferred over the VPN? as opposed to just KB and mouse input over RDP or Logmein?

P.S i honestly an not an insider from logmein :) its just saved my butt so many times when ppl ask for remote access solutions :D

    Cheers

  2. Ok. You should put the following case forward to him:

VPN - standard easy to setup PPTP can be done quickly however the security is very low and with quickbooks data flying across it who knows what could happen.

The easiet thing to do is remote access a pc and run the data that way for a number of reasons, one being that there is WAY less data to transfer over the net, you are only transfering over the images and the KB and mouse input, rather than the actual Quickbooks data.

The 2 best ways to achieve this (IMO) is to install logmein (www.logmein.com) on the pcs and access all of them via that or forward RDP through to the quickbooks pc.

I think that logmein is easier and safer because:

    1) 256bit encryption

    2) No ports have to be forwarded

    3) You can use a completly random email address to signup with such as 56655214kkjidgr@yourdomain.com to give you maximum security. (Do you have access to your server to setup address's?)

Anyway il leave this with you :)

    EDIT:

you can also use L2TP VPN which harder to setup, but what also occurs to me is that you could use Hamachi to setup a VPN really easy (if your Boss 100% sure he really wants/needs VPN)

    Thanks

  3. Well i use Avira Free and disable the advertisements with a neat little trick i know (only works on XP Pro, what OS do you have?). It works really well, infact too well i would say as a few things such as ipscanners are detected, but i cant live with that.

I also use windows defender, but only because i like the idea of the vista security model and i currently run X64 XP.

To cleanup my pc i use ccleaner and to defrag it i use defraggler.

All that being said if you run everything in a virtual machine like i do (aside from visual studio and games) you will have no trouble anyway. It takes 3 mins to recreate a hard disk for a virtual pc as opposed to 3 hours to reinstall, so i do most of my work in VM's.

Since you have an older pc i would omit the Virtual PCs and maybe windows defender here and just exercise caution.

Oh and i also use Firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript, that really helps protection too :)

    Thanks

  4. Since you are using SBS you may as well configure the email to be collected by exchange. At least that way there is some redundancy.

If the users are using outlook express (i assume they are) there is a great utility from nirsoft.net that will grab the names and passwords of any pop3 accounts it finds on the local machine. If you do this then you can easilty create them on the exchange box :)

  5. Remove Norton and get Avira. Problem solved.

Sorry that was ignorant of me. But seriously you should look at a lightweight alternative to norton and systemworks. If you need help finding any just ask here :)

    thanks

  6. At the point you are mapping the drive have you authenticated against the domain controller? In dos it wont prompt you, it will just not work (i think)

    :)

EDIT: Sorry im an id***, you can map on the local subnet so i guess you are doing it the same way across subnets.....

An afterthough of mine would be to use netmon to track what happens when you map a drive on the local subnet and compare against what happens with a remote subnet.

Also are there any Firewalls inbetween the subnets?

    Thanks

  7. I though 255 and 0 were reserved for unicast and multicast? hmmm..............*Goes off to wikipedia...*

EDIT Nope, 255 is reserved for broadcast on the local subnet. Anyone care to shed some light on anything ending in 0?

  8. I believe the best way would be to have for example

Domain.com registered, with your webservers and perimeter exchange servers sat in the DMZ and have int.domain.com on the LAN where you have your AD servers sat.

    Thanks
