  1. Hi I've run into a problem. The older versions of quicktime and itunes used to work fine on my AMD 64bit laptop but Quicktime 7.1 & the bundled iTunes now doesn't work on 64bit mode, ever since some new Microsoft security updates were added. I've googled this problem and it appears I have to uninstall it and install the older version of quicktime and itunes instead. I've tried various ways and numerous times to try to uninstall quicktime from my system but for some reason there's still some invisible quicktime file lurking somewhere which constantly gives me the message that I can't install the older version because a new version is already installed. Does anyone have any solution to this? Help - I miss my iTunes Thanks in advance
  2. Having been a long long-time Mac user, I'm now trying Windows, and just bought myself a 64-bit laptop recently but the dang thing was pre-loaded with Windows Home edition (32-bit). The manufacture/distributor says that the laptops with Windows Pro X64 were released to resellers since July (I bought min in late September) but I'm still seeing the retailers selling it pre-loaded only with Windows Home - 32bit and as for softwares, you're right about how few softwares are available in 64-bit. Some retailers don't even know enough of 64-bit to advise if it's compatible... I'm using Sony Vegas Movie Studio (before I try the Pro version) and it's also on 32-bit but is emulated for 64-bit...
  3. My laptop is an AMD X64 Turion but it came pre-loaded with XP Home. I've since reformatted the hard drive, split the partitions, did a totally new clean install with XP Pro X64 edition on the C drive and the XP Home edition on the D drive and the 3rd partition for working files and storage. In the C drive with the XP X64 OS, I've noticed that there are now 2 program files - Program files (which I presume is where X64 native softwares will go to)? - Program File X86 (which I presume is where 32bit softwares will be installed?) Am I correct to assume the above? Please correct and explain further if my understanding of the above is wrong. Questions: 1) if 32bit apps go into the X86 Program file, do I actually need a second OS (XP Home or Pro) in the 2nd partition? 2) is the 32-bit XP Home OS is necessary for apps & drivers (printer, scanner etc) that are only available in 32-bit? 3) will these peripherals (printer, scanner) work seamlessly if for example, I were to open an app that is 64bit native booted in the X64 OS and tried to print it on a 32-bit color printer, for example? 4) Anyone know of any anti-virus/utilities/spyware softwares that are 64-bit ready? Norton's Sytemworks is still only 32-bit and in fact, the software's CD is not even readable if I were to boot the laptop on XP 64. Thanks in advance
  4. oh thanks very much for that.... Ok this is what I'm considering and perhaps you can tell me what you think - C Drive -15GB for x64 & Applications (Adobe CS2, macromedia studio, Antivrus, MS OFfice, Video Editing and others like Acrobat reader etc D Drive - 5 GB Windows Home + some drivers for printers/scanners etc that still run on 32 bit E Drive - 10 GB (for Vista - when it comes out F Drive - 70 GB for Storage? Do I need to get partition magic if this is the case - to be able to create more than 2 partitions? Thanks again Cheers
  5. Hi folks I am a total newbie to Windows having been a Mac user all the time. My company recently purchased a Acer Ferrari 4000 and it came installed with Windows Home, which was loaded onto the C drive. The 100GB HDD is already partitioned into 50/50. Now this is where I need your help please. and would appreciate your patience in talking me through this (the tech support at Acer isn't any help at all and Microsoft..well I haven't contacted them yet). I've bought the Windows X-64bit OS for installing onto the Ferrari. It hasn't been installed with any other programme or antivirus etc. So : 1) do I install it on the C drive and leave the Windows Home edition alone, or 2) Install it on the partitioned D drive? 3) or should I simply do a clean install of it and discard Windows Home Edition (I would personally prefer if it were Windows Pro instead of Home, but since I don't have that luxury to get both Pro and Pro X-64, I've to make do... 4) How do I do a clean install, if that is the recommendation? 5) will it remove the partition and how do I re-create a partition if it is no longer?) 6) How do I do a clean install and maintain the partitions? 7) Should I install x-64 into the C or D drive? 8) will the x-64 recognise the items that are existing in the Ferrari such as the modem, the Lan, ethernet, DVD -burner/player etc etc *Anyone familiar with the Ferrari - are the items 64bit ready? 9) Where do I find drivers for XP-64 bit if some drivers are missing? Ok I think these 9 questions will suffice for now. I know how to troubleshoot my Macs but Windows is just beyond me - which folder the preferences or drivers go etc.. As I mentioned, please have a little patience with me as I only have 1% Windows knowledge. So don't expect me to know or understand for example, what Bios or Ping or etc means. I've heard of those terms but have absolutely no idea what it means. Thanks very much in advance. Cheers all
