  1. There are 2 different Academic programs available. The first is an Academic License, this license actually belongs to the school and must be upgraded or removed once the student leaves the school. Technically this is only an upgrade license but the media doesn't check for compliance. The second is Academic Editions of Full Packaged Products. These can be used perpetually by the owner but some products have limitations on commercial use. These are available in Full or Upgarde versions.

  2. Just to touch up on this subject.

The sale of Microsoft OEM software is only appliacable when the software is already installed on a complete operational system, any OEM software aquired with pc componets or non-componets is considered a non-legal transfer of licence, their for voids any tranfer of agreements. For complete details, you can call Microsoft or post again i will post offical documentation regarding this topic.

Here are a few direct quotes from the microsoft OEM site.

With the new 1-pack, the unopened package can be distributed to another system builder by itself, without any hardware requirement.
OEM system builder software packs are intended for PC and server manufacturers or assemblers ONLY. They are not intended for distribution to end users. Unless the end user is actually assembling his/her own PC, in which case, that end user is considered a system builder as well.
Can I distribute an unopened 1-pack to an end-user?

OEM system builder software is designed for OEM system builders for preinstallation on new PCs. The outside of the pack states “Intended for PC and server manufacturers or assemblers ONLY”. While unopened packs can be distributed to other system builders, they are not intended for end-users. If an end-user opens the pack, they are bound by the break-the-seal agreement which requires them to preinstall the product using the OPK, support the product, and other requirements not appropriate for an end-user who does not have the skills and technical knowledge of a system builder. An exception to this is when the end-user is actually assembling their own PC, in which case, that end user is considered a system builder as well, under the definition in the OEM system builder license agreement.

What do we do with existing inventory of product with the “old” OEM System Builder License and/or COA label?

We realize there will be an overlap period between licenses and both license types will be in the market for some overlapped period of time. If you are carrying inventory of OEM System Builder product with the former license agreement/COA, those license agreement terms and conditions will be in effect until you distribute the product. As you order new inventory with the “new” license, the new license terms and conditions will be in effect. You can continue to distribute any inventory of existing product once the new license is out – we do not expect you to replace or exchange your existing inventory of product with the “former” license agreement.

  3. Hi Guys,

I made a new UA disk with the newer D4D8DCA9 file set and did a fresh install, but it still wouldn't pre-active.

We also got an AMD version in today, so I tried both UA disks on this one too, with the same results.

There must be another Packard Bell set for these 'iMedia' PC's. :(

Anyway, I did another debug test after the install, on both PC's with these results:

    NECC_

    F000:BCBB

    F000:FF70

    NEC Computers

    F000:06F1

    F000:0814

    NEC-PC and NEC_Product stayed blank.

I hope the info is useful to someone. :)

Can you post your MGADiag.exe report?

  4. :hello: I would like a little clairty on one point please. I found a place thats selling a copy of xp pro OEM. They are selling it in a cd case with the cd key and a yellow COA on the case. Is that still a legal and valid copy for me to buy and use. BTW Thanks for the excelent info. :thumbup

Once a Multi-pack or Single-pack with the a yellow COA is opened it can only be sold with a "Fully Assembled PC" and must be preinstalled on that PC. If you want to purchase a single copy you must buy a sealed Single-pack. These are harder to find because most resellers would rather buy a 3-pack or a 30-pack at a discount and break it apart and most end users aren't familiar with the new rules. A sealed Single-pack will be packaged as follows:

The 1-pack will come in a padded envelope, and will have the OEM system builder break-the-seal license agreement affixed to the front of the envelope. Inside, you will find just one individual software license (which includes the Certificate of Authenticity label, hologram media, and documentation).

  5. The OEMBIOS set you are using requires that "NECC_" be in the bios at exactly F000:F4F0. On the few systems that I looked at this coresponds to the BIOS version string (not in the SMBIOS table). To start debug open a command prompt and type debug. The command S F000:0000 FFFF "NECC_" will tell you every time the srting NECC_ occures in the BIOS.

The other OEMBIOS set that FreeStyler mentioned will accept the strings "NECC_", "NEC-PC", "NEC Computers", or "NEC_Product" anywhere within the BIOS.

FreeStyler: The 323E2E81 set should be considured obsolete, the D4D8DCA9 set should be used as a replacement.

  6. Anyone had any problems with the Packard Bell fileset ?

I've got a Packard Bell P4 2.5Ghz here, [no model name that I can see, but it has a long blue oval around the switches on the front] I've tried both Home and Pro with the OEMBIOS fileset, without any luck.

    Anyone got any ideas ?

Open debug and type the following line

    S F000:0000 FFFF "NECC_"

    and post the results here.

Also check the CRC32 hashes for (all 4 of) the oembios files just to make sure the fileset you are using is the same set that I'm looking at.

  7. am i the only one that actualy knows the windows licence - AS buying an OEM licence without a new computer is ILLEGAL

Buying OEM Windows licences without a computer has always been legal. The sale of licenses is covered by the SBLA and not the EULA. If the COA is purplecoa_1.jpg, greencoa_4.jpg, or bluecoa_2.jpg then the software can be resold in the sealed multi-pack or with non-peripheral hardware. If the COA is yellowcoa_sysbldr_1.jpg it can only be sold in a sealed single-pack or a sealed multi-pack, individual units (with yellow COAs) from opened multi-packs can no longer be sold with non-peripheral hardware.

OEM Office licences can only be sold in sealed single-packs or sealed multi-packs. There never was an exception for non-peripheral hardware for Office licenses

  8. I just noticed something interesting today. When I started working I had installed a WGA version earlier than 1.5.540.0 (I dont remember the exact version) and WGA notifications. While I was working WGA got updated to version 1.5.540.0. When WGA got upgraded MGADiag.exe stopped reporting the SLPBIOS strings. I than booted up in safe mode and was able to see the SLPBIOS strings. All my computers without WGA notifications are runnning WGA version 1.4.389.0 and still report the SLBBIOS strings.

NO, 1.5.540 still reports SLPBIOS flawless, u sure the oembios files set u are checking is original royalty vendor?

I didn't spend too much time dignosing the issue. I know that the files were SLP files and it stopped working as soon as the version number changed to 1.5.540.0 (maybe it just needed a reboot). I removed the notifications and changed LegitCheckControl.dll to version 1.4.389.0 and now its working again.

One thing I am sure about is that WGA upgraded itself without my consent and it didn't get the upgrade from my WSUS Server.

  10. With OEM licenses of Windows XP (when Windows is preinstalled on a system you purchase or purchase an OEM) the license stays with the computer and you may not recieve Tech support. If you get rid of the computer, you lose the Win XP License.

However, with the Retail version of the license, it can be transferred to another computer AFTER it is fully uninstalled from the original computer. Retail version also gets you 3 free Tech Support calls. Any hangup with activation or registration only takes a phone call to Microsoft to explain what you are doing with your retail copy of the software.

How can you tell the difference? OEM product keys have OEM in the key number. Volume Licenses are 1 license per machine, if a license (software) is FULLY removed from one machine, it may be installed on another.

Microsoft licensing information can be found at microsoft.com/licensing.

OEM Licenses cost less than half of what a retail licence costs. You would have to be transeffing the OS to a third PC before you realize any savings if you buy retail.

  11. You can try ending processes and stopping services until you find what process or service is preventing you from logging out. Once you have this information we might beable to give more helpful advice.

  12. Not to take focus away from the origional post here, but I'm having somewhat of the same issue. .. sorta..

I hadn't used my laptop in weeks. (battery issues). I just started it back up, and all the windows automatic updates started installing. After it automatically installed 20 or so security updates, I restarted it so the updates would take affect. Now it tells me that my copy of windows XPpro isn't genuine!

This just happened five minutes ago... Am I going to continue to be able to log in/access my computer? ... or will my system eventually lock me out, just so I'll have to buy a new copy of Win. XPpro?!

This should not prevent you from logging on. Currently MS is using this technology to get end users to report resellers selling counterfeit software and MS claims it is to protect the end users. There is no gaurantee that MS won't change their tactics in the future and prevent you from logging in but such an action would probably result in legal action.

  13. It starts up to the log in / click your user name to begin page. If I click my user account a box apears saying that I must get Genuine now, I I click the option of 'Get Genuine' another box appears saying the windows must be activated and do I want to activate now? If I press yes it logs me back off to the welcome/log in account page. These are the only options I have so can't navigate anywhere else.

You can login using the builtin administrator account from safe mode.

  14. The problem is that the keyboard only works if you have Update Rollup 1 or later installed. Since I don't have MCE installed I cant apply the Update Rollup. If I knew which files from the update rollup were for the keyboard I might be able to install them manually.

Overall the keyboard is a big dissapointment. Since it does not emulate a legacy keyboard I can't use it to access the BIOS or during Windows Setup.
