(already extracted, you at least need the DATAn.xxx files I believe)
Notice that I'm only providing where I found it and no idea what version it is or whether this will hose your system as the IAA wasn't really meant for 440BX.
HTH
Great Google-Fu! Thanks submix8c.
(And yes, I realise that this doesn't constitute your endorsement of IAA for 440BX).
For the record, I installed it using the Windows Driver Update wizard. According to my benchmarking software (CrystalMark), the advantage I thought that it might give me over the native Windows driver, however, did not materialise. The native driver outperformed IAA in all tests, by a small margin.
Installing IAA left me with a clear disadvantage too - it removed my ability to hotswap my CD-RW drive (at least, the 'hardware eject' icon is no longer present). But there have been no problems aside from that, so far.
I'll restore the Ghost image I made before install.

http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/...b/cs-001410.htm
The Intel® Application Accelerator will not work with the following Intel® chipsets:* Intel® 440BX chipset
* Intel® 440LX chipset
* Intel® 440EX chipset
* Intel® 440GX chipset
* Intel® 440FX chipset
* Intel® 430FX chipset
* Intel® 430VX chipset
* Intel® 430HX chipset
* Intel® 430TX chipset
This is really interesting. The installer really refuses to install IAA2.3 on these systems, but the driver itself recognizes PIIX, PIIX3, PIIX southbridges and what's real surprise, IAA2.3 package contains hidden INF file for these chipsets:
(Apologies to those who object to the revival of old threads; and for going off-topic here. It seems like a good place to post this, but I will start another thread in another forum is asked to do so.)
So, I want to install Intel Application Accelerator 2x on a laptop with a 440BX chipset (one of those officially unsupported), using the hidden INF discovered by Petr (above). The OS I'm using on this laptop right now is Windows 2000 (again, sorry for the off-topic - although I plan also to try it on a 98SE2ME installation).
I unpacked the installer using 7-zip, then used Snoopy's Winpack (mentioned by erpdude8 above) to extract files from the installer's CABs (including the hidden INF, which I then renamed to INTELATA.INF). The driver files for NT+ I could find were INTELATA.SYS, IDECHNDR.SYS, IDEBUSDR.SYS, and IPRTCNST.DLL, and IATAENU.DLL. I tried using the Driver Update wizard to install the extracted driver. The renamed INTELATA.INF was used, but a required file could not be found - IATA2000.DLL. I couldn't find this file in the installer.
Does anyone know whether this file is created by the installer during the installation process? If so, could you tell me how to create it without running the installer (and any other required files, for that matter)?
I tried a conventional installer-based install, but as Petr said above, it refuses. Does anyone know how to remove the check(s) that prevent the installation?

Looks like erpman's nt4 sp page was removed too.
Right. I wonder why that was necessary...?
I don't think MDGx's NT4 page is quite as comprehensive as Erpman's was, but is as reliable as ever.

There will be an announcement regarding the 2000 hotfix list shortly.
And here it is.
I will be updating the Windows 2000 Hotfixes list at FDV's website until EOL (July 2010). Any issues regarding the list should be addressed to me henceforth, for the duration. To be sure of a prompt reply, it would be great if you could PM me, as well as posting here.
I'm a relative newcomer to HFSLIP, and like many of you I too have limits on my time. So in all likelihood I'll need your help, particularly regarding any unofficial updates that come along.
That said, I aim to update the page within 3 days (at most) of the release of updates (a rod for my own back there ).
Also, Windows2000-DirectX9-KB975560-x86-ENU.exe goes into HFSVCPACK_SW1
Thanks PVU. The page will be corrected with that information shortly.
Thanks to all past and future contributors,
bristols

Remember, End of Life is only a few months away. It would be nice to have someone finish this up until MS stops issuing updates. You can modify the existing layout however you wish (as you can see, my 2003 list looks radically different from 2000. Make it how you like).
Any takers, reply here and PM me so I am 100% sure to see your post. Thanks
FDV
Hi fdv.
Since there seems so far to be no takers, and since I keep my own updated list, I volunteer. It shouldn't be a problem for me to update the 2000 list at your site, for the duration.
If this is still useful to you, please let me know how I go about it.

Well, I am using an unnamed China made USB 2.0 4 port card base on VIA chips...
For better performance and lower CPU usage, you can buy one base on NEC chips.
Hi Ken,
Thanks for this, and sorry for my late reply.
Did you have any problems installing the USB 2.0 stack? Did you only require the drivers provided with the card, or was it necessary for you to use a Windows CD? Did you have to apply further windows updates (for example, by visiting Windows Update) before you had the most recent USBPORT.SYS, etc. etc.? Or perhaps, even though your laptop was USB 1.1, you didn't have to get any updates from elsewhere to update to the USB 2.0 because the necessary files already in your system?

I need a ATI Mobility 128 AGP 2X driver. Dell has the wrong driver listed.
Also I was able to get the screen fix because a c610 motherboard was shot and the screen was
in mint condition for only 35 bucks. Now I can't find a graphics driver. Please help thanks.
As far as I am aware, this guy Ziyad Hosein had the definitive statement on drivers for your card:
http://web.archive.org/web/20071031073030/www.geocities.com/ziyadhosein/rprow2k.htm
I use his tweaked 2k_5058 version for Windows 2000 in my old Dell laptop.
Unfortunately the links to driver files and packages on the above page no longer work. I haven't searched too hard for them across the net, however - so you might find them quite easily.

But I think that you better save the money to buy an external USB HDD for your DELL is more better (don't forget to buy an USB 2.0 Cardbus card to use with it).
Which USB 2.0 Cardbus card would you recommend? I've heard reports about some that overheat.
Does anyone know whether a USB 2.0 Cardbus would significantly increase the CPU load, or whether the card's onboard chip would take much of the load?
Related to this, I've read that in a straight comparison, Cardbus DVB-T cards (for example) utilise the CPU less than USB DVB-T sticks (in systems that are USB 2.0 capable). This Dell laptop of course would require the card to enable USB 2.0. I wonder whether, using such a card to supply me with USB 2.0, I would suffer from the same high(er) load on the CPU, as I would with an already USB 2.0-capable system? The laptop's Pentium III is just 500 Mhz and struggles, for example, with Flash playback. I'm concerned that the benefits of USB 2.0 would be outweighed by the strain on my CPU.

Hi guys, sorry about the delay in my reply to your comments.
Thanks for sharing your hard-won knowledge and experience!
The speedup from higher RPM is noticeable, but may be diminished by (I think) ATA 33 speed of that thing (but still slightly better).Would there be any performance gain, then, if I upgraded to a 7200 RPM hard drive (because yes, the board is ATA 33 speed)?
About the second [uSB] port: often those devices shown in Device Manager are connected to nothing... I've got seven of them in my computer right now - and the only two USB ports are connected to one controller. Makes me wanna cry or smash something. :angrym: What I want to say is, it might be possible to find/solder a header/connector, but either very advanced knowledge of electronics is needed or if you can find someone who did it already...Ah. I had higher hopes for this than you have left me with. Thanks though, I really appreciate comment on this matter. I'll take her apart when I have a spare afternoon and check it out. If possible, I still would really like to utilise the mysterious second USB port.
CPU upgrade: I think it's not worth it. Maybe, if you're absolutely sure that the crossflash BIOS will work (which rarely does).I haven't tried it yet, but here are instructions for crossflashing several Dell laptop models with the bios of a newer model (in my case, from Dell Inspiron 3700 to Latitude CPxH):
http://web.archive.org/web/20040408220354/...tonent/itol.htm
(Right now I'm unable to find the link which suggests crossflashing to the 3800 BIOS.)
and what I was pointing at was that 16 and 32bit "PCMCIA" look the same.Yes, they "look" similar, but a CardBUS Card WON'T FIT in PCMCIA Slot, there is a notch (actually two of them, one for the 3.3V and one for the 32 bit)
AND the 32-bit CardBUS ones have (or should have) the additional grounding strip:
http://www.pcmcia.org/faq.htm#cardbuscard
There is a lot of confusion about these stoopid PCMCIA thingy.
- Old PCMCIA PC Card were 16-bit and 5V. <-please read as ISA BUS
- Later PCMCIA PC Card were 16-bit and 3.3v <-please read as ISA BUS (I guess they were used for a short period only)
- Latest PCMCIA CardBUS are 32-bit and 3.3V <-please read as PCI BUS
Card 1) above will fit in PCMCIA 5V Slot 1).
Card 2) above will fit in PCMCIA 3.3v Slot 2) BUT NOT in PCMCIA 5V Slot 1)
Card 3) above will fit in CardBUS 3.3v Slot 3) AND in PCMCIA 3.3v Slot 2) - where it WON'T work - AND NOT in PCMCIA 5V Slot 1)
Thanks for your usual exhaustive and thorough explanation and exposition, jaclaz!
After checked the spec of Dell Inspiron 3700, I confirmed that its' PCMCIA slot is 32bit car compatible, so use an USB 2.0 cardbus card is not a problem.Indeed. The two slots this laptop has are both reported in Device Manager as:
Texas Instruments PCI-1225 Cardbus ControllerI have a hard copy of the laptop's manual, which reads:
(The laptop has) a PC Card slot with connectors for two 3.3- or 5-volt cards. Both PC card connectors support CardBus technology. In additio, the lower PC Card connector (slot 0) supports the use of a zoomed video (ZV) port card.Notes: The PC CArd controller supports the CardBus standard for 32-bit data transfer on the PC Card.
I have two such cards, both with the notches and the grounding strip jaclaz mentions. For example, I have this TP-Link Wi-Fi card:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-WN510G-...s/dp/B000FO6QXQ
BTW, your notebook is similar as my old Samsung NV5000 in spec, so I can give you some upgrade info to it.Thanks for the info, Ken-mkII.
@ All: Note that the 40GB HDD is already an upgrade on that machine .Indeed. The laptop came with a 12 GB drive, 4200 RPM. Slow and noisy - would keep people awake at night. The speed difference between that and the newer 5400 RPM drive is noticeable, but it was a worthwhile upgrade simply for the reduction in noise.
0 - Old PCMCIA PC Card were 16-bit and 5V. <-please read as ISA BUS

Regarding the LBA48 issue, I have the last BIOS installed (version A17), dated 05/28/02. I'm not sure whether the issue has been addressed in it, but optimistically I hope so. Anyway, I have divided my current 40GB drive into several partitions, the largest being 12 GB. The C drive is just 4 GB.
Thanks for the Bluetooth information - I wasn't aware of that.
I want to persist with this old laptop for now, partly for the learning experience it provides, and partly because (being perhaps a fool unto myself) I don't like to be wasteful. But also I want to stick with it for now for the sheer pleasure of getting tolerable and sometimes surprising speed out of it.
Does anyone have any more suggestions? How about the serial port - could I use it for anything useful in this day and age? Anything that would increase the laptop's speed or functionality?

I have a Dell Inspiron 3700 (circa 1999), with an HFSlipped installation of Windows 2000 (using FDV's fileset 9). I would like any suggestions from a hardware point of view about how I can make the system faster and more responsive. I am up for modifying and tweaking the laptop internally and purchasing upgraded hardware.
(Feel free to continue reading or skip to the Reply button now. Thanks!)
Current specs:
CPU: Pentium III 500 Mhz
RAM: 256 MB of PC100 SDRAM
Motherboard: Intel 440BX chipset
Hard Drive: 40 GB, 5400 RPM
Media bay: CDRW
(Other) limitations:
The motherboard has only two RAM slots, and can use a combined total of only 512 MB.
A CPU upgrade to, say, 750 Mhz is possible if I flash the BIOS with that of a newer model (e.g. the 3800).
It has one visible rear USB 1.1 port, but Device Manager reports a second (internal?) port.
It has a serial, a parallel and a video port.
However:
I'm unwilling to buy RAM and/or a CPU upgrade over the internet. After a fruitless couple of years looking for components locally, I'd like to concentrate on any other hardware modifications and updates I could make.
I've been thinking about adding a second hard drive onto which I'd move the swap file. I could do this internally (replacing the CDRW in the media bay) or externally via one of the rear ports (or even the possible internal USB one). I realise that an IDE HDD attached to a USB 1.1 port will not pay dividends. The idea may be outmoded, but would it be worth attaching a HDD via the serial port?
I'd like to hear about any other modifications that extend functionality. For example, the mysterious internal USB port could perhaps be connected to a small Bluetooth dongle fitted internally.
If after careful consideration you think it would all be a waste of time, please say so (again, after careful consideration).
Any constructive ideas are appreciated, however wacky. But my first priority is to speed the old girl up.

@Charlotte... This is possibly a long shot - forgive me for coming to this a bit cold.
What version of Windows Scripting are you using? Have you compared Opera using MSE v5.6 with 5.7? At least as far as 98 SE is concerned, reverting to 5.6 solved some javascript-related problems for me (though back then I wasn't a heavy user of Opera and I don't have any directly relevant evidence of problems to report). Links to MSE versions (just for your convenience - I'm sure you know where to find them):
http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#MSE
I use Opera 10.10 on 98 SE and experience no lockups.

I would also like to pass on my best wishes to all who frequent this particular forum, especially the mods. dencorso for doing a fantastic job in keeping to it all together with good and sound advice, both technical and non-technical. MDGx for keeping us all going with fixes and updates etc, proving things are still looking bright for 9X, you were sorely missed during your absence.
To all those learned members, too many to mention, but I think we all know which I mean, in keeping us informed, corrected and at times thoroughly entertained all the way.
Ditto.
Thanks guys. Best of health and good fortune to you all for 2010.

Opera 10.5 pre-Alpha is out. Here is the download link for the Classic installer (as opposed to the MSI one given at Opera Labs):
Opera 10.5 build 3172 Classic Installer
As a pre-Alpha, expect crashes and instability (assuming that it installs and runs at all - there have been a lot of changes under the hood since version 10.10).
Edit: oops, corrected the download link. Now it really is for Opera 10.5. Apologies - I shouldn't post here when tired.

You're welcome, of course.
But: oops! I have to correct myself on an important point. The only file patched by the latest version of sp193's Shell 95 Update is SHELL32.DLL, not EXPLORER.EXE:
Currently it only tampers with SHELL32.DLL, making it more "Windows 98 compatible".So please update your documentation and accept my apologies for any confusion!
0 -
@sp193:
I used SH95UPD to patch the 98lite Sleek-installed SHELL32.DLL, and then installed MDGx's 98SE2ME. Your patch made the workaround documented here unnecessary (it's about 3/4 down the page, under the text "replaces Windows 98 SE EXPLORER.EXE with older Windows 95/OSR2 version"). After applying your patch, I didn't need to swap EXPLORER.EXE for a later version in order to install 98SE2ME. The installation went without any important hitches (there was a WinOldAp error at the end of the extraction of ME files, which seemed to be a failure in the reboot routine. A manual reboot was all that was needed for the installation to continue as normal).
I hope that this is good to know.
Thanks!
Edit: I confused SHELL32.DLL with EXPLORER.EXE. I've re-read your documentation. I slap my own wrists in your absence, sp193.

There is another way to install 98SE2ME after having used 98Lite's 'Sleek' option (which installs the Windows 95A/B/OSR2 version of EXPLORER.EXE). This is in addition to the method documented here (about 3/4 down the page, under the text "replaces Windows 98 SE EXPLORER.EXE with older Windows 95/OSR2 version").
After installing 98Lite with the Sleek option, and before installing 98SE2ME, I patched the newly-installed EXPLORER.EXE (version 4.00.xxx) with sp193's Shell 95 Update Project (SH95UPD). The 98SE2ME installation then went fine, except for one 'Winoldap' error at the end of the extraction of ME files from the disc. This error seemed to be a failure in the reboot routine. As such it seems unimportant - nothing a manual reboot didn't fix. After the reboot, the cloning of existing system files went ahead from DOS, and the rest of the installation went as per usual.
Result! Thanks to MDGx and to sp193.
Edit: by the way, this applies to an 'Option 2' install of 98SE2ME, which doesn't include the shell replacement of Option 3.

Saw an earlier topic about spoofing the User Agent to make sites display in IE6, is there a way to use the same principle to have Firefox report a newer version?
The 'easy' way to do this would be to install and use Chris Pederick's excellent User Agent Switcher addon for Firefox, then either select one of the user agent strings installed, or add a new one based on the browser that you would like to have Firefox appear to be.
Here's a list of user agent strings for Firefox. Be careful to change the language reported by any of the user agent strings you use to your own language. Example - the first string listed on the page I linked to under Firefox 3.6:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2; zh-CN; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/3.6
If your language isn't Chinese (zh-CN), but is (US) English, change zh-CN to en-US.
Also worth noting is the Windows NT 5.2 bit. This identifies your Operating System as Windows XP/Server 64-bit. To change it to Windows 98 SE (for example), use Win98 instead.

I'm building a minimal 98 SE system. I'm trying to shrink it according to my needs. Of course there are accounts of many similar projects documented across the internet. But it seems that few of them mention explicitly uninstalling MDAC components.
I've read that MDAC version 2.1d is shipped with 98 SE (so far I have avoided using the MDAC Component Checker from Microsoft to verify this, mainly because I'm not keen to use its MSI installer). Here's a list of MDAC-related files that I'll take as my main reference for files to remove:

Vfpodbc.txt <system directory> VFPODBC Release NotesI won't try to remove every file listed here, because I'm already aware that other parts of my system (and programs I will use) require them (particularly the files listed above in the System directory). But the plan is to remove as many as possible without reducing the functionality I require.
The Component Checker mentioned above apparently can be used to unregister MDAC-related files. There's also a script provided by Microsoft to achieve the same purpose. Microsoft's stated aim is to help users install a later version of MDAC than the one currently installed, not to completely uninstall MDAC. I may try to use these if my simple approach of deleting the files and then cleaning the registry with Regseeker doesn't work out.
I'll update the thread with the results. Please share any thoughts you have about removing MDAC. Has anyone tried it? Is it completely unwise? Can you advise me about any pitfalls I should avoid? Thanks guys for any comments. I should also mention that I used the 98lite 4.5 Preview version to clean-install 98 SE without Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, and many other components.

Windows Updates
in HFSLIP
Posted
Hi all,
The Windows 2000 Hotfixes page at FDV's website has been updated with April 2010's patches, and a few other changes (see under the "Last update description" heading near the top of the page). Thanks go to Parseus for his help with some of these. Any issues, then please post here (but please PM me to make sure I reply promptly).
============
There are a few things on which I need you guys to help:
- 980858 - Windows Media Services 4.1 update, released this month. I've listed this. As far as I could see, TommyP did not list any Windows Media Services updates when he was maintaining the page. I'd like to know your opinion on these updates. Who needs them? Are they undesireable? I've listed 980858 as for Server only. Is that right?
- 977816 - Microsoft MPEG Layer-3 Codecs vulnerability, released this month. I think this is only for WMP6. Could anyone correct me otherwise?
- 976323 - Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange and Windows SMTP Service, released this month. Again, I've listed this one as for Server only. Is that right?
- DirectX 9.0c (Gaming). We still have the March 2009 release here. I have refrained from replacing this with the February 2010 release, because I recall (vaguely) issues with it for Windows 2000 users. Parseus pointd me to a thread on extracting the cabs from the February 2010 DirectX release, but I'd like the input of users of HFSLIP for Windows 2000. Is there any reason why I shouldn't list this newer release?
