  1. Is anyone other than me having problems with 2479628 v4 (MS11-012)?

I've installed 2479628 v4 on two different Windows 2000 systems (both created with HFSLIP using FDV's fileset, which removes IE):

    - System 1: using IE6 files (Browseui.dll version 6.0.xxxx.xxxx, etc.)

    - System 2: using IE5 files (Browseui.dll version 5.0.xxxx.xxxx, etc.)

In System 1, 2479628 v4 installed fine. The 'white shadow around desktop icons' problem was gone. All icons look great except animated system tray icons such as the CCleaner 'cleaning in progress' icon, which appears 'whitewashed'.

In System 2 (with IE5 files, including an IE5 Browseui.dll), 2479628 v4 installs, but Explorer fails to load after the restart. The Windows login screen appears, but after log in, Explorer.exe doesn't start. Could it be that the IE6 Browseui.dll included in 2479628 v4 is the problem on this IE5-based system? On the other hand, it seems to be a recurrence of the problem I had with 324446, when I tried to install it manually (no problem though when HFSLIPPED). 324446 doesn't contain Browseui.dll, so I guess my problem is with this last version of Explorer.exe (version 5.0.3900.6920, which WildBill kindly modified and included in 2479628).

Is anyone seeing the 'whitewashed system tray icons' issue? Has anyone tried to install 2479628 on an IE5-based system?

    Thanks for any reports.

  2. Just a quick question. After installing the MS11-012 patch, I started seeing ugly white shadows on some of my icons (The ones with 32-bit icon resources such as Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox.) What could be causing this?

    Hi MacLover,

I've had a similar issue before. I've found that deleting the icon cache (using TweakUI's 'Repair icons' for example), sometimes helps. Another thing to try is to increase the size of desktop icons (Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Icon) say from 32 pixels to 33, and then to put them back to their original size. One last thing to try is the below reg fix, although it might have the effect of decreasing your icon colour depth to 16-bit (in which case, simply go Control Panel > Display > Effects and tick "Show icons using all possible colours". Reboot after each attempted fix.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics]

    "Shell Icon BPP"="32"

  3. The Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page has been updated, adding these updates:

    - 324446

    - Adobe Flash Player SWFLASH.CAB April 2011 release (10.2.159.1) (thanks jvidal)

The notes for 2290570 and 979687 were updated.

Edit: updated the URL for the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page.

  4. So this is new hfslip checker for wk.

    http://zalil.ru/30821903

Thanks very much for taking the time. :)

what about KB979902 and KB979332 are these obsolete or no?

979332 requires an encoder to be installed in addition to WMP9 (to my knowledge it is not part of an ordinary WMP9 installation). As such and on balance, I decided that the update is outside the scope of the Updates page. Thanks to this post by -X- for the information.

Please remove KB924432 from requested hotfixes list :)

924432 contains the latest versions for Windows 2000 of rpcss.dll (5.0.2195.7116) and ole32.dll (5.0.2195.7103 - when not installing WildBill's unofficial 979687, although I believe WildBill's fix is based on an earlier build of ole32.dll than this 'SP5' update).

Do we need ocsasnfix.exe for KB974571?

Well, I guess the best answer I can give to that is "it depends". On the updates page I point out that this update has issues, and link to the Knowledge Base article for 974571 for people to make their own judgement.

  5. Does anyone know what it would take to get a fully-working version of Yahoo! Messenger on Windows 2000 SP4 with IE5?

After installation, in order to get the program to launch, I had to replace WININET.DLL (from IE5) with that from IE6. Now I'm able to sign in (but always only at the second try) and see contacts online, but I can't send or receive any communication.

Any guesses as to what files I could replace to change this, maybe?

  6. AAARGH, I NEED HELP!!!

Oh no!, now adding these 11 hotfixes results in a crash into appwiz.cpl!

I attached a screenshot, when I click on "Setup Windows components" (it is circled in red) the app suddenly stops with an error of insufficient rights. This happens even if I log in as administrator.

It never happened using all the hotfixes listed onto bristols page, just now, using these latest ones listed above.

Does this also happen to you?

Can you suggest me how to detect the hotfix/hotfixes generating this?

    post-285151-0-02649800-1301261088_thumb.

Just as an off-the-cuff and possibly useless suggestion (inspired by tomasz86's report about a problem with slipstreaming 896414) - try downgrading Scesrv.dll to the version from SP4. See if that solves it. However I fear it won't be so easy to discover the cause. :\

  7. Have you tried putting it into HFSVCPACK_SW1\ ?

It will override newer files will older one this way.

Extract the Ntprint.dll 5.0.2195.6745 from the hotfix and replace it manually.

Thanks PROBLEMCHYLD. So brutus1234, try extracting Ntprint.dll, putting it into the REPLACE folder, and renaming it Ntprint.dl_ (yep, replace the last L with an underscore, so that it looks like a compressed system file).

WINDOWS2000-KB942831-X86-ENU.EXE has newer than any other

    infocomm.dll 5.0.2195.7147

WINDOWS2000-KB816868-X86-ENU.EXE has newer than any other

    wininet.dll 5.0.3900.6944

I informed WildBill about infocomm.dll from his 2290570. It seems that his patch was indeed based on an older file. I used Mitec Explorer to look at the PE Header timestamps:

    942831 - PE (header) Timestamp: 10/01/2008

    2290570 (WildBill's) - PE (header) Timestamp: 20/06/2003

About wininet.dll, you're talking about the version in 816868 being later than the version in the last IE5 Cumulative Update - 982381 - only (the infocomm.dll version number in 982381 for IE6 has a later version than 816868). But when using Mitec Explorer, I found:

    816868

    wininet.dll 5.0.3900.6944

    982381 (LAST IE5x CU)

    wininet.dll 5.0.3888.1400

    Date (from PE Header): 14/04/2010

So we have a discrepancy - 816868 was released in 2004, but its infocomm.dll has a later version number than the much newer infocomm.dll from 982381, released in 2010. Personally I take it that 982381 has the latest version, even though it may be missing some fix that is present in 816868 (who knows) .

  8. Thanks brutus1234. The updates page will be updated soon. :thumbup

Well, this hotfix needs more care, it won't slipstream!

I just checked it and it indeed provides Ntprint.dll ver 5.0.2195.6745, but still I can't find it into the new slipstreamed win2k install. Why?

Has it to be copied into some other folder than HF\ ?

I'm not sure. Have you tried putting it into HFSVCPACK_SW1\ ?

  9. I have slipstreamed all of these, I'm not sure which ones are

obsolete but hfslip replaces the older files with the newer ones

    ...

I looked at the update list you posted and this is what I can report:

  10. I've updated the first post: KB822834 added.

Thanks brutus1234. The updates page will be updated soon. :thumbup

Edit: updated the URL for the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page.

  11. The Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page has been updated, adding these updates:.

    ...

    Wow, much activity for W2K!

Does it make sense to update Parseus' file-checker-extension for W2K?

(if yes, who's gonna wake up Parseus :) )

Yes, indeed! But we've got a long way to go before we catch up with you illustrious guys.

It makes sense to update the tool, of course. :) I have not actually investigated it. I hope Parseus or someone else is willing to step up and help, because before I have had the chance to look at it, figure it out and update it, a long time will have passed. :\

  12. Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page has been updated, adding these updates:

    - 837789

    - 838018

    - 896414

    - 897711

    - 922667

    - 888111

    - 932590

    Thanks to brutus1234 and PROBLEMCHYLD.

The notes for 2419632 were updated (thanks tomasz86).

Edit: updated the URL for the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page.

  13. This is a very simple trick I try every time a KB article seems not to point to an EXE package. In most cases it works.

As an example, I used this trick to download the hotfix for KB932590 (as you can see, the page doesn't contain a link to the download page).

    1. open a KB article containing a link to the package download page (example: KB818383)
    2. clic on "View and request hotfix downloads"
    3. edit the URL of the new page, replacing the article number (in this example, replace 818383 with 932590)
    4. press ENTER and... that's all, folks! :thumbup

Of course... thanks. In my haste, it slipped my mind to try this.

Edit: updated the download page link for 932590 on the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page with MS Hotfix Request page.

Edit: updated the URL for the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page.

  14. Ok, this is a funny joke by MS.

    KB839228 should provide:

    ...

It's not uncommon for MS to make mistake in their KB articles, and for them to diverge from the contents of their corresponding updates. Install 872955 as well as 839228 - it will provide you with those missing files.

Edit: about KB932590, if it appears on your windows2000 updates page, then I think it should have a different background, meaning it's unofficial.

It seems that 932590 was released by MS for Windows 2000, but later retracted - I've seen (a few) references to Windows2000-KB932590-x86-ENU.EXE in older posts here, and this update was uploaded to the Hotfix Share website by a well-known and trusted member of that site. So it seems I was wrong, but as with any file the source of which you're not 100% sure, use it at your own risk.

Regarding 888111: I've never had the need to use it, and I am not sure myself about any problems it might present if installed on unsupported hardware. In general, I agree with you. I've included it on the page, but I advise caution for the above reason. If anyone knows that the update can be safely applied to unsupported hardware, please say.

  15. Thanks guys. I've updated the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page.

Thanks for the feedback regarding 324446. As yet I haven't added it, but hopefully will do so soon (I need some time to try it myself). Meanwhile, if anyone else has used it, please say so!

932590 - This hotfix was not released for 2000. However, MDGx produced an unoffical 932590 installer for 2000 - did you use that?

    http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?autocom=downloads&showfile=3384

Thanks PROBLEMCHYLD. I stand corrected. In general I'd prefer not to link to updates hosted on sites like Hotfix Share, but I made an exception here. Use at your own risk.

Edit: updated the URL for the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page.

  16. Thanks brutus1234. Very helpful. I'll go through your list one by one.

324446 - Installing this manually caused me problems, so I deliberately left it out. My notes say: "2k hangs after login, Explorer fails to start. Avoid". I'll try slipstreaming it. If anyone else has this installed, please let us know here.

837789 - Good find. Will add.

838018 - For Server, and anyone who chooses to install Front Page Extensions from the Win2000 installation CD. Not installed by FDV's fileset. Will add.

    838141 - 839228 already includes Rastapi.dll 5.0.2195.6824.

896414 - Scesrv.dll is indeed amongst the source files. Will add.

    897711 - Ditto.

932590 - This hotfix was not released for 2000. However, MDGx produced an unoffical 932590 installer for 2000 - did you use that?

922667 - I guess this was left out initially because FDV's fileset does not install COM (it's often said that hardly anything requires it). But will add.

888111 - Will add this, although I am not sure myself whether or not portcls.sys 5.0.2195.6906 and sysaudio.sys 5.0.2195.6906 are fully backwards-compatible with non-High Definition audio devices. I'll add a note. Can anyone add anything here?

811392 - This tool doesn't exist in the Windows source. On balance, I think it shouldn't be listed.

  17. @pointertovoid

Great post, very helpful. Thank you. :) I am in a similar position to that which you refer - Windows 2000 on an ageing laptop - and this is exactly the kind of information about increasing performance through hardware additions that I was looking for. In particular, thanks for your CF SLC1 recommendations.

That is, I suppose you have a single bay with a P-Ata interface. Cheap and thin adapters exist for two CF on a 44 pins P-Ata port. Their quality isn't decisive.

Could you provide an example or two, please? I'd like to house such an adapter and card in the media bay of an old Dell Inspiron, so "cheap and thin" is exactly what I'm looking for. Hope I can benefit again from your experience.

  18. @WildBill:

I've listed your current 'unofficial updates' at Windows 2000 SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page. Members here reported no problems so far with slipstreaming your updates. Hope you don't mind.

Keep up the good work! :thumbup

Edit: updated the URL for the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page.

  19. In the end I have in fact added those 'SP5' hotfixes to the Windows 2000 Updates page although, at least for the time being, this change has not been made to the page that's currently living at FDV's website. It's here, instead:

    Windows 2000 Updates.

This is an update of the page at FDV's site. The lists contain and take into account WildBill's unofficial updates, and many hotfixes that are obtainable from Microsoft on request.

The latter hotfixes mostly update files from Service Pack 4 and the Update Rollup 1.

Unofficial updates are distinguished from the older updates that they supersede, making it clear for those who either prefer to use or omit those updates.

    Any feedback is much appreciated!

Edit: updated the URL for the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page.

  20. Do you know how to create a bat file to extract them all at once instead of running them from cmd prompt?

Sorry, no; but I'm sure some Googling would reveal the answer.

WINDOWS2000-KB942831-X86-ENU.EXE has newer than any other

    infocomm.dll 5.0.2195.7147

Yes, true. WildBill seems to have based his infocomm.dll patch in 2290570 on an older version. I'll put it to him.

WINDOWS2000-KB816868-X86-ENU.EXE has newer than any other

    wininet.dll 5.0.3900.6944

Thanks, I'll check it out. Meanwhile, any feedback you could give on the changes made to the lists here would be much appreciated.

Edit: updated the URL for the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP.

  21. Windows 2000 Updates

The latest updates for HFSLIP can be found listed at the Windows 2000 Updates website.

This is an update of the page at FDV's site. The lists now contain and take into account WildBill's unofficial updates, and many additional hotfixes that are obtainable from Microsoft on request.

The latter hotfixes mostly update files from Service Pack 4 and the Update Rollup 1.

Unofficial updates are distinguished from the older updates that they supersede, making it clear for those who either prefer to use or omit those updates.

I've done a lot more work on the lists besides, re-ordering them to make more chronological sense, breaking out the Windows Script updates into their own list, and adding more descriptive information to updates.

I hope there are still folks around who are interested enough to give feedback! Thanks.

Edit: updated the URL for the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page.

  22. bristols

When you have some time can you tell me which of these are obsolete.

When I put these files in the HFSVCPACK_SW1 for some reason the older files replaces the newer files.

I don't have the time to go through them all. Some of them are included in the Update Rollup 1 (891861):

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891861

(scroll down to "Fixes that are included in Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4")

Perhaps if you have time, you can edit your post to mark those that are included.

I'm still updating the 2000 Updates page when I have spare time. Aside from any corrections and additions that will need to be made to the page, I'd ask you to take the updates listed there as a more or less definitive list.

  23. I have removed these files from my HF folder because they don't install. The reason being the file versions are older or HFSLIP don't want to slipstream them.

I believe its because of the files being older. I'm not a 100% sure.

    ...

The majority of those you list are not included on the Windows 2000 HFSLIP Updates page - because of their obsolescence, I guess. I've been through many of them before, and left them off my own list. A few in your list - towards the bottom - are replaced by newer, often unofficial updates from WildBill.

I'm in the process of going through that page, updating it, and including listings for WildBill's unofficial updates. I'm trying to make clear on the page that those updates are unofficial, for those who want only Microsoft-produced updates. So, the official updates replaced by unofficial ones are not being moved to the obsolete updates list, but rather are being marked as "superseded by an unofficial post EOL update". This is all time-consuming, but I'm getting through it.

  24. All of these Hotfix folders were empty, when the script was complete.

    - 970238 - Rpcrt4.dll - REPLACED BY 2360937 (WildBill)

    - 980218 - Atmfd.dll - REPLACED BY 2296199 (WildBill)

This one is replaced by an official update:

    - 975713 - Shlwapi.dll - REPLACED BY 982381 (the last IE Cumulative Update)

    These I'm unsure about:

    - 980195 - ActiveX Kill Bits (REPLACED BY LATEST IE CU?)

    - 2290570 (?)

    - 908506 requires 896423

This one is not 'replaced', as such:

    - 971961 - Jscript.dll - Script 5.6 update. You can choose to install Script 5.6 or 5.7 updates. In the former case, this is the latest version of Jscript.dll.

Something I'm unsure about are the CAT files contained in the obsoleted updates above. Do those CAT files supply registry changes or anything of value that is not supplied by WildBill's updates? Are they only relevant when those updates are installed?
