  1. Sygate firewall wont work on X64, it installs in the WOW but wont run, i use Comodo Pro and i must say its as good as sygate(if your a control freak like me;), but it needs to learn what programs and processes are safe or not, but generally its good and has a glossy interface much like recent linux variants or Vista(crap OS). It prompts when a process starts that hasn't been given permissions and to date it has blocked 2 hijack attempts on my system. There are not many firewalls for Winxp64, and this one is free for personnel use.
  2. Well i have flashed bios to 1303, but still getting 'error loading operating system' just after post, it seems that windows setup see's the sata drive formats it and copies the setup files, then windows setup reboots to begin installation process, then it fails to load.
  3. Other drives are not connected atm, only sata, opt, floppy and there are no settings in the bios in regard to specific boot ie IDE, SATA. This mobo is an ASUS A8N-SLI-PREMIUM, it has detected my sata drive but cannot boot from it, as far as i have searched, the only reason it wont boot from my sata is because the bios is not configuring the windows setup for that drive correctly, therfore the bios needs to be updated, its 1009 atm, and i want to flash to 1303.
  4. I re-installed windows yesterday, i've had a sata II drive for a while and had decided to make it my local drive, previously was IDE. Anyway, i re-installed, and when windows reboots after copying files it brings up an error just after post, i found that this error is because my bios doesn't recognise my sata II drive . Now most ppl would say just flash bios to the latest version, not so easy, i have latest bios version, but no way of putting it on a floppy, i was thinkin maybe a bootable cd, and i know there is also a way of writting awdflash+bin file to a disk that will auto-run and flash bios to what ever version you like, can anyone help pls. Thanks in advance
  5. Thanks
  6. Does anyone know of a version of sygate firewall which works with XP64?
  7. Is there a way of stopping windows from checking removable media, when i'm not exploring removable media?, it slows down explorer and is very annoying when i'm in a hurry to start a search etc
  8. Hi all, i have just resurected my wifes machine and have installed a network adapter(Netgear FA311 10/100). During install of driver for network adapter, it prompts for WIN98 cd, and i have lost mine. Question, is it possible to get these dll's and other files that it is asking for from somewhere else, as i am in isolated(country area)??
  9. Funny thing happened yesterday, windows update downloaded some updates, and after reboot, all is good, no more drop downs staying on screen. Windows sure is weird, i prefer linux, purely because i am a control freak!
  10. Yeah, its faster, and i reckon some of my 32bit apps are running quicker in WOW, than 32bit xp. Games are noticably quicker loading, and video editing is lightning fast, but sata raid is one of the reasons my system is quick, apart from the fanny quicker CPU i use.
  11. Freeze only for 1 sec , but drop down stays there till i reboot, and it has been random, sometimes it doesn't appear for days, and then it might occour continously in a day. This used to happen in the beta ver of x64 win, and also in the evaluation ver too, and that was on my old machine. Surely this has been seen by MS?? I am going to re-install windows anyway, just to get rid of some spyware that i cant get rid of, and maybe causing this problem. thanx for your help.
  12. Ok, points proven, but how many of you can say your machines are virus and spyware free?, i bet none of you. There are always something hidden(may not be causing any problems) in system32 or explorer, that your A/V couldn't find, here's a perfect example, i had nod32, not trial ver, but purchased it, i ran it everyday, upgraded, and it missed 3 trojans, 2 keyloggers, 4 malware. 1 of the trojans was mydoom.b@mm, i have since changed my A/V, and all is good, for now. What im trying to say is that , MS are going to create a A/V, and while that may seem evil and just another ploy by their marketing department to force a monopolistic SW on us, some good may come from this, like this, imagine a A/V that detects ALL viruses and spyware, 100%, it would be asking alot, i know, and there are some of you out there who dont thinks thats achievable. I guess we will have to wait and see
  13. im not sure but, i have been told that if your using ide drives and cd-rw, they all must be set to CS cable select. i dont know if this could be causing your problems in regard to cd-rw drive.
  14. Heres what i think(sitting back watching quietly), this goes against all i believe in but, if MS design a A/V then there will be no-one else to blame if it doesn't work. For a A/V to work with and in an OS, it must incorporate some of the OS architecture, so as to be compatable, and consume less physical mem and less kernal mem, it must also contain a firewall that is intelligent, and adjusts to surfing habits, ie trusted sites etc. If MS want to regain trust and confidence of its customers, it must offer this free, and updates should be free as well. MS have made alot of $ from there customers over the years, example, you buy OS, but you need word processor, so you have to buy MSoffice, this should be apart of the package, which is what ppl have been saying for sometime now, monopoly yes, greedy yes, smart no. Linux is looking better all the time.
  15. Lately i have been getting parts of drop down menu's staying on screen, even over the top of opened windows, and refreshing doesn't get rid of them. Its not any program in particular, just drop downs in programs and from system tray. I am using Nvidia display driver 81.98 and system is stable till this started happening, getting the occasional freeze, but no blue screens. Any body else had this problem??
  16. Wow, i didn't expect this thread to last this long and cause so much controversy, great to here other peoples opinions on anti-virus for winxp64, and the NOD32, avast, Mc afee, etc. And for the bean heads that work for MS, sit back and listen to what people want in SW, especially anti-virus.
  17. I wouldn't bother, there are too many bugs in the trial version, and it crashes on a regular basis. Since i installed official release it hasn't caused any problems and is very stable especially when overclocking. Install at your own peril.
  18. yes avast has been around for longer, but it doesn't have the track record of nod32 in respect of detection of most recent threats and very low false alarms, also i have 2gig of ram, so i'm not concerned about mem hungry applications, i use sandra to benchmark my system before and after installing new programs to see if any performance has been lost or gained. see for ur self, install 30day free trial and compare to avast, i bet nod32 finds threats that avast cant. B)
  19. i think u will find that epson have beta drivers available now, i have R210 photo stylus printer, and driver was released 3 months ago. good luck
  20. just fixed that dead link, it should work now.
  21. for those of you who have been waiting for a antivirus that works and scans all folders and directories in 64bit windows, its availabe as a trial at eset(nod32). 30 day free trial, dont know exactly when it will be released but, i imagine its not far away This is a beta, so dont go installing it on anything crucial. nod32 64bit download 30day trial
  22. hi i have same prob with my pc, it occours when i have programs running in background, ie trillian, f-prot, spydoctor. Im running AMD athlon 3500 on epox 9nda3+, 2 sticks of legend 512 64bit certified ram, geforce 5700, 2 ide drives and latest nvidia drivers 78.01. i have noticed that if i roll back my nvidia display drivers to 66.96 i dont get that many system check errors popping up. MS have no idea, and it doesn't cause any programs to hang, so i am not phased by it, but it would be good to know how to fix it. i ran memtest, came up fine. I was one of the many people who tried the pre-release version, and it was buggy, like defrag didn't work sometimes, and other programs hanged. i bought the official release 3 months ago. Windows XP Profestional Build 3790.srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447:service pk1.
