  1. Ok im having some strange problems trying to access the users located on a windows 2003 server from a windows 2000 server. The situation is this, I have multiple domains, all DC's are running windows server 2003 standard, most other servers are also 2003 and i have two windows 2000 servers. Connectivity between all servers and domains is fine, i can browse them in network places to access files, ping by name and by domain name, the 2003 dc's are all set as windows 2000 native mode and all the appropriate trusts are in place. So when i share a folder on any of the windows 2000 servers which are both in domain A, i need to give users in domain B permission to access them, so i click on the "look in" section and click on domain B and get the error: "Could not display objects from this location because of the following error: NO authority could be contacted for authentication" This only happens on windows the two windows 2000 servers and only for this one particular domain, i can get a list of the users in all other domains which have basically the same setup as the one that isnt working. so anyone got some ideas for this??
  2. no there is no access to the domains if you double click on them... There are two domains that are there, both these domains were set up for testing purposes, we used them for a few days each then removed active directory from the servers and created our current domain on the same server, I have checked all my DNS and WINS settings are there is nothing at all that relats back to the old domains
  3. Hey everyone... currently we are planning a move to a new domain controller, the old one will be compleatly rebuilt, I need to know if there is a way to copy (migrate) all the terminal services settings e.g. licences accross to the new server so that I dont have to re configure everthing on the new DC
  4. its been at least a week and they are still there...
  5. I have been in the process of migrating our users to new domains, now that i have completed this I still have the old left over domains in network places, is there a way to remove these? i thought they would just automatically be removed when I ran dcpromo on the old DC's but alas they remain... any suggestions??
  6. really? i wasnt aware that DHCP could also configure a client WINS address. Thanks!
  7. is it somehow possible to automatically set up WINS on client machines? what I need to do is add a few I.P addresses into the WINS option, located in the "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" to every computer in my network. Now with over a hundred computers in my organisation its a bit if a job to go round to every single one. Can a batch file be some created to do this or is there some other way of automating this?? thanks
  8. Disregard this I have fixed that problem by adding the servers into the hosts file, now just need the domains displayed in network places
  9. ok i thought wins was only necessary for network with older servers like NT. SO in Wins what exactly do i set up is it the replication partners? thats about the only thing i can see what you can actually configure something in wins.
  10. the domains are on the same subnet, im not sure what you mean by LanManager Browser. Also If i go to run and type in the domain name e.g \\domain.local i can access the shares on the domain that way. However this only works for one domain, if i try it for the second domain e.g. \\domain2.local i get the error "\\domain2.local is not accessable, you might not have permissions to access this network resources contact the administrator blah blah blah, the network path was not found" So could this be a permissions problems and if so where do i configure the appropriate permissions?
  11. hi everyone... im trying to configure two new domains, both running windows server 2003 standard edition (sp1) i have configured DNS (primary forward look ups and secondary forward lookups) and the appropriate trusts properly (two way external trusts.) I can log in to each from the other domain fine using termincal services but i cannot get the domains to be displayed in network places. Are there some extra things I need to configure before this works? Im pretty sure everything is set up right as i can ping both domains using their netBIOS names only. Any help would be great! thanks.
  12. ok im having lots and lots of fun trying to configure DNS for two domains in seperate forests. Ok so for one domain a set up a forward lookup zone example.local configure everything fine like zone transfers and name servers.. etc and it works fine. DNS automatically creates all the subfolders like _sites, _tcp, _udp etc which go under the example.local folder. Same as when i set up a secondary zone i can configure everything properly and it automatically creates all the sub folders underneath the secondary zone folder. So this works fine I can ping this domain just by the domain name (example.local) but now when i go to set up the second domain after i configure everything like name servers and zone transfers, exactly in the same way in which i have configured the first server and none of the subfolders get created! (so none of the_sites _tcp, _udp) apart from that i set up everything up right and i cannot ping the domain name example2.local. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING!!!. I know i can set up these folder manually but its a b***h of a job and there are some folders which i dont know the settings for. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling DNS and i get this same problem, Im using windows server 2003 standard edition on both servers I need to be able to ping by the domain name so that my trusts work properly... any help would be great!
  13. time is exactly the same with all servers..
  14. Ok thanks for those steps. i have configured everything but now when i go to validate the trust on one side i get this error "The verification of the incoming trust failed with the following error(s): The trust password verification test was inconclusive. A secure channel reset will be attempted. The secure channel reset failed with error 1311: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. The outgoing trust has been verified. It is in place and active." all passwords and usernames are the same also so im not sure what the password verification test is supposed to mean When i validate the trust on the other side it just says "cannot find a domain controller ..... verifiy that the DC is available and try again"
  15. ok i have found out about the recursion and it is not disabled. So i followed the steps you said and the trusts are in place however now i cannot log on i just get an error saying the domain is not available. Also when i try to validate the trust from one domain the error says "windows cannot find a domian controller for the domain ......... verify that the DC is available and try again" how do i set up a split zone DNS transfer as i would like this to be done properly.
  16. what do u mean by this? u have not heard of recursion. haha yea i know they must be different but i thought they might need to have a common element for example domainA.network.local and domainB.network.local
  17. i can ping to a FQDN but not to the netbios name, and yes im using a FQDN for the trust.. does it matter that the domains have completly different names?
  18. i am having some trouble setting up trusts for my network. I need to make the domain e.g. domain.local trust the domain e.g. network.local. Both servers are running windows server 2003. When i try to confiure the trusts in the AD domains and trusts console i get the error "New trust wizard cannot continue because the specified domain cannot be contacted" I can easily ping the DC's in both domains and i can browse the files on each DC if i type the full DNS name as a run command. Does it matter that the domain names are different? will this effect the trust at all? im trying to set up an external two way trust in this situation any help would be great. thanks
