And for my work computers we use WSUS to update windows and defender doesnt seem to work to well with that since it uses windows update to update. Also where are the features that Microsoft Antispyware has? like the tracks eraser and browser restore? I hope microsoft will release are more functional full version

Does anyones version of windows defender close to the system tray? or when windows starts up is it automatically in the system tray? I have installed it on my home computer and work and on both its not in the system tray so Im never sure if its running or not. it is set to start automatically, if i go to msconifg it is in the startup items with a -hide extention. Just wondering if this is a possible bug or if this is how its supposed to be?

do you mean default domain security settings > local policies > security options because i cant find this Computer Configuration-> Windows Settings you speak of so this displays a message on every users workstation when they login first thing in the morning?

easy question - for the life of me i cant remember where to set up logon messages for my users - just something that says "use of company ineternet & email is for compnay use only" or something along these lines that pops up after the user logs in. is in the group policy somewhere or domain security? thanks

In my new domain structure, one domain name with multiple sites with a DC in each site. If i go to the command and type in ping domainName.local what IP address should it ping? Because i have tryed it from a few different computers and they all ping to different DC's is this a DNS Problem? In the name servers tab should i have every DC of every site listed there or just the main DC? My DNS Zones are currently Active Directory Intergrated primary zones. And there is only only the two zones that AD sets up when u first install active directory in there. thanks

Im going to install exchange onto a server (not a dc) very soon, is it necessary to run domainprep and forestprep on every DC in the domain? We have one domain name, with 7 sites and a DC in each site.

Domain topology & Exchange server thread part 2!
rakem replied to rakem's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Ok the error is 'Naming information cannot be located because: specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted, contact your administrator to verify the domain is properly configured and is online' Also there is this one from the Exchange System Manager 'The RPC server is unavailable' I only get this error when the first DC that i configured is shut down, i can shutdown the other two DCs fine and everything works. -
In virtual server 2005 i have set up a virtual environment consisting of 3 DC's in different sites all being DC's of a central domain and all are global catalogs. I need to test the subnets now, the current IP range im using is lets say 10.1.20.0 i to test my subnets i need to change two of the servers IP to a different subnet e.g. 10.1.21.0 and 10.1.22.0 but then there wont be any communication since I dont have a router to route the traffic. So my question is, is there some type of virtual router software that i can use for this or is there a feture in virtual serve 2005 that allows this or is there any way at all that i can test this in my virtual envorinment?? thanks

Domain topology & Exchange server thread part 2!
rakem replied to rakem's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
right i will get the exact error messages later today, all dc's in every site are a global catalog server too. Exchange is not running on a DC it is its own server which is just a member of the domain. -
Ok so after some good advise from guys in here and after some research we are going to change our domain structure. Remember me? im the guy with the 7 seperate domains. see link Here to previous thread. So im a virtual environment i have created ONE domain name, called central.local, i have added two other DC's to the domain, so there are now three DC's in the one domain. I have created three sites (in AD sites and Services) put a server in each of those sites and made all three server global catalog servers too. i have reinstalled exchange and got it all working and everything, however i have been doing some redundency testing, when i shut down one of the DC's exchange goes a bit physco, alot of the featues dissapear and i get errors. So my question is do all three DC's in different sites need to be online for exchange to function properly? Also in sites and services the replication is set as the <automatically generated> ones that appear automatically, do i need to setup new AD connections and create my own replication method or is it fine to uese the automatic ones? thanks.

To set up a new domain independtly of the old one we would need to do that on a brand new server, because you can set up two domains on one server right? however this does sound like the best approach to our problem. So using this top level down (TLD) approach sounds good do, so this means that we have our main DC hosting the domain australia.com and our other domains use the australia.com name with their domain name in front e.g. nsw.australia.com. each domain will still have its own DC which hosts all its user accounts in Active Directory, but does this mean that the DC that hosts the main domain (australia.com) will have all the user accounts from every state in it, or none or what? Im a bit confused as to the role of the DC that will be hosting the main domain name - australia.com
-
yourdomain.tld? i have never heard of that.so what your saying is that we have tha main domain e.g. yourdomian.tld, then have the seven sites as childs? like domain1.yourdomain.tld, domain2.yourdomain.tld.. etc How exactly do you create a GC server? or is it just a server that hosts the GC's and if so how does the GC get onto the server, isnt the GC directly related to active dirctory?? maybe im a bit wrong here haha not sure... We have one massive file server in our head office that hosts all files, its got almost a terra byte haha, so DFS wouldnt be the best bet for us i dont think well thanks for all that... the main thing is that with alot of users in different states it will mean alot of flights and a hell of a lot of work to switch everyone over to this new domain. but again thanks for the input
-
each of the 7 seperate domains has its own Active Directory. The domains are located accross the country (Australia) so we thought it better that each domain can run independently of each other to help with redundency

We are planning on implementing Exchange Server 2003 onto our network, one of my work mates has been on an exchange server course and he feels that we have our domain topology setup wrong. At the moment we have 7 separate domains each operating independently of each other. For example – domain1.local, domain2.local, domain3.local. All domains obviously have their own DC and they are all running Windows 2003 standard. We have Two way trusts linking all the domains as well as DNS. Our DNS is configured to have Active Directory Integrated Primary forward lookup zones for the DC of that domain and then secondary forward lookup zones which point to every other domain. Now I think that our topology is fine and that we can implement exchange onto it. My work mate thinks that we need to have one central DC e.g. central.local, then have each of our other domains as child domains of that e.g. domain1.central.local, domain2.central.local, domain3.central.local. We are planning to put Exchange onto a server that does not have Active Directory Installed, I know that exchange has an active directory integrator thing, so it shouldn’t be a problem to connect to the other domains AD from the exchange server to set up mail boxes right? So what do you guys think? Reconfiguring every domain would be a massive job that would cause so much disruption its not funny, we have about 200 users so I don’t really want to go down that road. And also if the central DC crashes then we loose the whole network. I cant see a problem with out current set up. Any suggestions would be great! thanks

Is there any type of software by microsoft, or any other company, that can let a network administrator monitor what web sites users are visiting and at what times they are going to these site? We have been having some trouble with people downloading unsuitable software at work and would like to be able to find out who and when they are doing so. thanks!

DNS errors causing active directory to crash
rakem replied to rakem's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I have found some registry keys under the HKLM\System\Current Control set\Control\Services\TCPIP\parameters\Interfaces that have IP address and subnet mask as 0.0.0.0 Also there are some keys called IPAutoConfigurationAddress that have 0.0.0.0 listed as well, any ideas on which ones i should get rid off? -
DNS errors causing active directory to crash
rakem replied to rakem's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Our DNS server does have a specific static IP address, the machines are not multihomed, but we do use teaming software on most of our servers. The ones in question either use an Intel Gigabit dual port or 2 intel gigabit cards, and we have them teamed in a static link aggregation mode. -
We have been having some DNS issues on a few of our servers which i believe are causing Active Directory to crash. When trying to access active directory user and computers, domains and trusts, we sometimes get the erroe "the server is not operational" Usually a reboot fixes the problem but this is not always the easy to do as we have clients accessing the servers 24 hours a day. Upon examination of the DNS logs there are numerous errors such as: Event ID 4015: The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly. The extended error debug information (which may be empty) is "". The event data contains the error. Event ID 9999 The DNS server has encountered numerous run-time events. To determine the initial cause of these run-time events, examine the DNS server event log entries that preceded these run-time events. The data is the number of events that have been suppressed in the last 60 minute interval. Event ID 404 The DNS server could not bind a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) socket to address 0.0.0.0. The event data is the error code. An IP address of 0.0.0.0 can indicate a valid "any address" configuration in which all configured IP addresses on the computer are available for use. Restart the DNS server or reboot the computer. EVent ID 408 The DNS server could not open socket for address 0.0.0.0. Verify that this is a valid IP address for the server computer. If it is NOT valid use the Interfaces dialog under Server Properties in the DNS Manager to remove it from the list of IP interfaces. Then stop and restart the DNS server. (If this was the only IP interface on this machine and the DNS server may not have started as a result of this error. In that case remove the DNS\Parmeters\ ListenAddress value in the services section of the registry and restart.) If this is a valid IP address for this machine, make sure that no other application (e.g. another DNS server) is running that would attempt to use the DNS port. There are hundreds of these errors all through the error log, Our DNS has seemed to work well for quite a long time, there have been no major changes to the system that would be causing these errors. All servers are windows 2003 any one got any suggestions?

I have just download WSUS and am testing it to see if we will install it on our network and so far the answe is a big NO! I cannot get my computer to be displayed in the group i have created. I have installed all the required software components e.g. BITS 2.0, .net and IIS. I have created a OU and put my user name in that OU and have configured a group policy to enable client side targeting, I have set the address for the WSUS server and configured all the other options in the goup policy that I want. (I know that the GP is working because i have disabled things like run and help from the start menu, so the GP is being applied ok) The WSUS server is set to use the group policy settings, I have waited over an hour for the cookies to expire and have also forced a group policy update using the gpupdate /force command. The only thing i can see that might be causing this is the SQL server service on the task bar of the WSUS server is not running, and when i open it up there is nothing to select in the services section. WSUS is running on windows 2003 standard with all the current updates installed. can someone please help me on this as i would really like to use this program. thanks.

anyone know of some software that can monitor servers for things like low disk space? Then if the disk spaces reaches a set level an email would be automatically generated and sent to IT which alerts then that disk space is low??

I recently had to change I.P addresses on one of our servers. Lets call is server1. Now another server called server2 is still picking up the old I.P address from somewhere. i.e when i type ping server1 it still pings the old I.P address. I have updated the DNS on all servers, i have scavenged the DNS records and clearned the cache and also updated WINS. I can get server2 to ping the proper I.P address by using the hosts file but i still would like it to be able to ping it without the use of the hosts file. But even when the server1 is listed in the hosts file I can't access it through network places or by going to run and typing \\server1, i can access it through the I.P address from the run menu and also by the FQDN. So where could it be getting the old I.P address from and why i cant access it through network places? it is the only server that i cannot access from server2?

i have just installed Virtual Server 2005 onto one of our servers running windows server 2003 standard. When i try to open the web administration guide Intenet exploere opens and it only says Service Unavaliable. VS 2005 requires IIS to be installed as well so that was done before the installation of VS, however when I open up internet explorer and type the http://localhost i get the same "Service Unavaliable" message so im thinking its a IIS problem, the windows event log shows the following errors and warning ERROR The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {A9E69610-B80D-11D0-B9B9-00A0C922E750} to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool. ERROR Application pool 'DefaultAppPool' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool. WARNING A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' terminated unexpectedly. The process id was '1744'. The process exit code was '0xffffffff'. any help would be great on this as i have exhausted everything I can think of.

iam trying to automate the install of a backup agent to our users, it has to do it through login scripts. The poblem is that alot of our users are restricted users (windows xp) so they cant install programs, which means that i need to use a runas command in the login script, e.g. runas administrator, however using the runas command it asks for the administrator password in the command promt, which the users do not know, so my question is, is there a way to use the runas command to install the agent and also include the password in the script so that it is fully automatic?
