  1. Can someone give me their un-biased opinion of what is the most realistic and easiest to install Longhorn theme pack that does not require StyleXp?? I'm using XP x64 right now and StyleXp has not been released for x64 yet, and even though does not work on there.... So I wait for it..... Also, are the sound effect files for Longhorn any different than they currently are for XP Pro?? I would hope that Microsoft might be adding in a different selection.... Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks, mrvader89
  2. K, that's kewl, you aren't in a position to upgrade cpu and mobo yet are you?? mrvader89
  3. It's ok for what you're using it for, it should be fine for now, you can upgrade pretty cheaply though...... What kind of ram are you using?? mrvader89
  4. Download this...... It's a program called CPU-Z, and will tell you everything about your cpu, your current FSB, info about your memory and lots of other stuff......... mrvader89
  5. The frontside bus is the thing that connects the processor to the chipset (any onboard devices and the storage drives), the PCI, AGP, ISA, PCI-Express slots, and the memory slots..... So, if your FSB speed is considerably lower than your processor clock speed, you are at a disadvantage because there is sort of a "bottle neck" situation going on.... Imagine you take a 2 liter bottle which has a opening diameter of 3/4", and you have another one with a 1 1/2" opening. They are both the same volume inside. You fill both to the top with water, and you give one to each of your 2 assistants. They put their hands over the opening and then flip the bottles upside down, and both take their hands off at the same time, releasing the water..... OBVIOUSLY, the bottle with the 1 1/2" opening will empty itself of water quicker, the 3/4" bottle being a bit slower...... To draw a similarity, the bottle is the processor, in both bottles being a virtual 2ghz, HOWEVER, the 3/4" bottle is the one with the 233mhz FSB, and the 1 1/2" bottle is the one with the 1000mhz (1ghz) FSB, and the water is the info that the processor is currently sending out to the memory, peripheral slots, and the storage drives..... It (the data) will get to the aforementioned 3 items quicker, with a faster FSB speed....... NOW, having said that, I'm not sure of what you mean about "integrated into the chip", except that the most recent Athlon 64 processors do have memory controllers on the chip..... Anyway, that's it for now, mrvader89
  6. Only $49.99, and it's a LiteOn too.... this one.... mrvader89
  7. Truthfully, I have no idea, however if I was taking a guess, I guess it'd be okay, perhaps at the max, 3/4 of what it could be at the best.... It'll be good enough, but not the very best..... I have a Athlon 1.05ghz in one of my old computers, and I'm sorta trying to imagine playing that on that computer....... Like I said it'll be good enough, if you're using DDR ram, then the only way it could become better is a quicker processor, not neccessarily a faster clock speed, but a quicker FSB (frontside bus) speed would help..... mrvader89
  8. Pricewatch brings up those prices for both of those, 242's for $158, 244's for $203 I see dual core desktops coming closer and closer, makes me wish I would have waited for this..... ALSO, AMD has release more dual core Athlon 64's, prices are as follows, 4800 $1049 4600 $815 4400 $535 4200 $537 No plans heard of yet for any dual processor Athlon 64 motherboards yet, still for a multiple core/processor setup, the Opterons are the most economically and financially sound.... Just a bit of news for everybody.. mrvader89
  9. Sorry about the double post, yes, I did already have the 3 hd drives and the dvd drive, but had to buy everything else..... I haven't cared for NewEgg much, it seems to me like there product info isn't always up to date...... TCWO (Thompson's Computer Warehouse Online) used to be the good place to go, until they got sued for not paying for their advertisement space at a local hockey rink and went bankrupt.... So yes, I am pleased with TigerDirect, they are only about 5 hours from me, so it does get here by the next day, that is, if I ship it with "Brown"... Any other questions or comments?? mrvader89
  10. It's a nice system, boots up and goes from the BIOS Screen to the XP Logon screen in 13 seconds flat, and once you click shutdown it's 11 seconds 'til it goes off..... I know of someone who built a dual processor computer with 2 dual core AMD Opterons and it goes from the BIOS Screen to the XP Logon screen in 5 seconds..... Very cool, and with 2 dual core processors, that means an actual 4 processors running, I think each were 1.57ghz a piece, and they were all 64 bit capable, and he put 8 gigs of ram in it if I remember correctly..... Also had a couple of SATA RAID setups.... So far as I know it's given him nothing but trouble, particularly with his various RAID arrays...... A defective TYAN motherboard here and there..... In all, about $3000 went into his, mine, a comparable solution only just a bit slower (5 seconds against 13 isn't that bad ) for around $600, purchased from TigerDirect (wonderful company, I can order stuff by UPS ground and get it the next night), I'm very pleased.... mrvader89

  12. Yeah, same here, 15yo...... Anyway.... It will work good enough for now, I just thought you were programming and you were going to be upset at anything less than perfect performance..... The system that is listed below my message was built for only $600, pretty good for that price.... Keep savin' the money.... mrvader89
  13. Not as good as it could.... I have a GeForce 6200, just a bit lesser than yours, but mine is a PCI-Express card instead of AGP, and mine is running with an Athlon 64 3200+ (2ghz).... If you're going to get a card as good as that , get a better processor.... If it allows 8x AGP, the n get a board that will allow 8x AGP.... Running that kind of card with such a slow FSB (frontside bus) is not good, your FSB speed is 266mhz, mine is 2000........ My card runs ok, but it probably could go a bit better, which means that yours will probably not perform as well as you'd like it too.... Go out and treat yourself, get a AMD64 processor, a new mobo, and some DDR ram, you'll enjoy it........ mrvader89
  14. The RAM Modules can be any size, but they all must be the same speed, and the same type (DDR, RDRAM, SDRAM)...... mrvader89
  15. Great, I just built a new Athlon 64 3200+ system, and even with plain old IDE drives, it runs like a Ferrari. You've made a good choice.... DO NOT INSTALL A 32BIT OS, you'll waste your time..... I installed Windows 2000 on mine previous to x64, and it just barely installed, it was so slow, I couldn't figure it out; even when I booted up it did not work worth anything, the response was so slow. That was something that I credit to trying to run a PCI-Express video card on a 32 bit operating system....... I thought I'd half killed the processor with how slow it was going......... Just go ahead and get the x64 trial, you'll love it, until the "Playskool" theme gets to you, but then there is Royale after that.... I just went ahead and bought the x64 full version, and it runs perfect, no problems whatsoever.. Yes, that is perhaps the only downfall of x64, all drivers must be 64 bit drivers, there are no hacks or any other ways around it.... However, that problem is slowly disappearing, every day, more and more devices gain support with 64 bit drivers being developed for them, it would be best for now just to hook up a wired network connection into the back of the router with the lan port coming from your motherboard, there will be a compatible driver for that with your motherboard driver CD...... Well first of all, 64 bit is so much faster, even without hyperthreading.... It's been optimized time after time after time, and you'll notice that there will almost never be any lock ups because of too many programs running, mainly because of the CPU throttling "Cool 'n' Quiet" technology that AMD put in..... I think you'll love it, keep us updated on the progress...... mrvader89
  16. Plain and simple, Get a CD Burner and a copy of Nero Burning Rom..... Get a download manager such as Download Accelerator Plus, or a comparable program with a "Resume/Suspend" feature... Download a NEW, FRESH copy of the x64 trial WITH the download manager.... Get a blank CD-R disc, put it in the burner, open up Nero, choose the "Burn an ISO to CD" option..... Locate the ISO file on your computer, and burn it to the CD..... That's it, it's not rocket science, and if the doesn't work, go out and buy the full version of XP x64 like I did, you won't be dissapointed...... Best of luck mrvader89
