  1. hello fellow msfn-ers!

So I purchased this great little dell tower in Jan of 2006, it's already going to be 3 years old. It works fine with a 2.8ghz pentium and 2 gigs of ram.

I am not really in the mood to shell out the money to build my own cause honestly I dont need it. I just use this for good ol internet, email, word, movie watching and no gaming.

I am upgrading the video card to a 512mb pci and adding an LG bluray player to watch bluray on my lcd tv. While I am at I figured why not try to upgrade the cpu.

I know that DELL is a pain in the a$$ when it comes to upgrading cause well, honestly they rather you buy a new rig than upgrade the one you already purchased....smart for them, bad for end users.

The problem is that I dont know how high I can go on the cpu (if even possible). I am attaching 2 screenshots from cpu-z which provide dell mobo info as well as my cpu info.

I did a search on pricewatch for another intel with a socket 775 LGA and found the following 3.8ghz intel.

I know there are some hardcore hardware guys here in msfn that can help me decipher my mobo's capabilities :)

And going to the dell website is useless cause they recommend a 2.8 celery and another pentium 2.8 with "service kit" for 270...yeah right!

let me know if you need any additional information.

    thanks,

    ceez

  2. So does the software needs to be bdlive compatible, the br drive or both?

I purchased the following br drive ? from newegg and nowhere does it say bdlive "ready". I even compared it to an expensive SONY drive that they have and that one doesnt have it either....heck, the cheaper LG is even faster than that SONY

I am going to get cyberlink powerdvd 8 which supposedly not only comes with br support but also bdlive support.

I know it wont make or break br to have the feature, but it's nice to know that in case there's some kick a$$ br bdlive disk out there that i'll be able to benefit because obviously i have it on my computer and should be able to access the content via my internet service.

    thanks again,

  3. Hello everyone,

Didnt know what section to post this on, sorry mods, please move if necessary.

I just purchased a bluray player and a video card that is hdcp ready. I am connecting this to my 42" toshiba lcd via hdmi....cant wait to get my vid and brplayer...

now to the question, if i get a bdlive disk can I use its features since I am online with my pc?

    thanks for the info!

  4. So one of our techs goes over to her office, walks up the her desk, stares at the monitor which indeed was blue.... you know that logon screen blue. So without even touching the keyboard he fixes the problem...

There was a post-it in the middle of the screen !!!! Those large size post-it that someone had pasted in her monitor with a note. Once removed she could see the CTRL-ALT-DEL screen..... IT Ticket was closed. :P

and that's a TRUE story that I wanted to share with you guys!

  5. In our case all our servers are actual HP servers and using RAID (stupid not to! :oP)

We also have BUE11d and perform backs up of the system state every day

In our forest root domain we actually have a total of 3 DC's. The 1st DC in the forest obviously holds all 5 roles. It's not a GC so a 2nd DC is the GC. The 3rd one just sits there and acts pretty ;oP

We have 1 child domain with 1 DC which holds sees the scheme and domain master role of that forest root DC and it runs the other 3 roles. Also a GC.

The same for another domain with single DC

Then a 4th with 2 DC setup, sees schema/domain on forest rood DC one of the 2 DCs in this domain holds the GC.

I actually found this article from petri which talks about a 'backup DC' which I can do in my case, I can use one of the 2 DCs on my forest root domain as a backup DC in case of failure.

    http://www.petri.co.il/planning_fsmo_roles_in_ad.htm

I just hope that I never have to run across a 'down schema/domain server'....NIGHTMARE.

    Thanks for the input!

ps - lol, yeah users become zombie like when there's no 'network', they look at you funny like if they want to eat your brains!!!!

  6. @cluberti....revisiting a 7 month old post which I failed to follow up on....

depends on how many group policies you have:

well we have the domain controller policy and the domain group policy, those are the only 2 that would apply directly to the domain controllers. I have some other gp's but are for workstation settings.

how many DCs (and how many sites):

we have our forest with 3 child domains.

forest= 3dc's. 1 holds the master roles, the 2nd holds the rest.

    child1 = has 1 DC

    child2 = has 2 DC's

    child3 = has1 DC

they are DNS servers for their respective domains.

(all FSMO roles assigned per MS specs)

how "clean" your DNS configuration is (and potentially the location of your DNS servers and the layout of the zones on the DNS servers):

this one I dont know how to explain as "how clean", how can I check if it's not "dirty"? And the layout? what info would I need to show you? where can I find info to read up to see if my DNS is configured correctly.

    ipconfig /all on the DCs:

they all have static IP's. The primary DNS IP on each server is it's own IP and the 2nd DNS IP is the address of the DC in the forest that holds the master roles.

    So if:

    ip: 10.201.20.1

    then

    dns1: 10.201.20.1

dns2: ipaddress of DC in forest that holds the schema/domain role.

Hope this info helps you out in helping me out! :)

    thanks for reading!

  7. we were running windows 2003 enterprise when we upgraded to R2. There was nothing to do other than to pop in the R2 cd which just adds all the extra features.

never had to worry about upgrading any schema??!?!

and when we install on a brand new box (file server we pop the r2 cd after the install and that's all.

  8. Hello everyone.

Per the FSMO role rules, there's 1 server in our forest that performs the schema and domain role for the domains. We were thinking what would happen if this server which holds these 2 roles should happen to crash? Hell would break lose i suppose along with no network authentication and people blocked out of their systems, webmail and even blackberry disruption.

I guess what I am trying to get to is, is it possible to have a 2nd DC that also has these 2 roles as a backup?

as always, thanks for the input!

  9. great that's some excellent input. Thank you for sharing. I guess there's no real danger to compressing unless the drives go bad. Either way these are going to be backed up to tape. These are just old architectural projects that we're just leaving them on a server for the users who are always requesting restores from projects 10 years ago can easily get to them without waiting on a restore or wasting my time for a single file! >:o[

    thanks again guys!

  10. hello everyone.

I have a question, at work we're preparing an HP nas with 450gigs of space for file archiving. I formated the disks (raided) and selected "compress drive to save disk space". I copied a few files over and noticed the compression, it looks promising. Apparently nobody uses it out there on web and everyone that denounces it is talking about compression of the C:\ drive which is not my case, my C:\ drives are not being compressed.

Just wanted your thought and or experience on using this feature.

    thanks!

  11. hey guys,

I am getting an error when I try to view the settings of the default domain policy gpo. See image attached.

Does anyone know how to get this fixed? It's only affecting the Computer Configuration - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Software Restriction Policies. Yet if I open the GPO and I can actually navigate to those settings.

    Thanks everyone,

  12. hello everyone,

I have a workstation that is connected to plotter printer, we usually just lock the workstation and the users do not have the password. Unfortunately this workstation shows if there are jobs on queue and error messages.

I've been looking for an application that will allow me to display the screen but disable/lock the kb/mouse.

I found a small app called ToddlesKeys but once activated it will show you on the screen what password to type to re-enable everything....I need to keep that pw hidden! :)

does anyone know of such application?

I cant remove the kb/mouse cause sometimes their tech comes in to fix some issues and he needs to sit at the workstation.

    Thanks,

    ceez

  13. Hello everyone. Came across a free remote software called TeamViewer. I would like to implement this on a few laptops at work, but of course wanna do the silent install so it can be deployed via the network.

The problem is that I dont know what is the insstaller they are using and cant really google specific switches for a specific installer type.

Checking the properties of the EXE doesnt show the installer either.

    The website is www.teamviewer.com

    Thanks guys.

  14. Hello everyone.

Curious question, I dont know if it just works like this or there is something wrong in the way that things are setup around here....

we have a forest with 3 child domains

    homedomain

    child1

    child2

    child3

If I go to AD, Member Of [Tab], click on [Add] and [Locations] I will only see the domain and OU's of that 'location', If I want to give a child1 user access to child3 I cant select child3 because it's not listed

Is this a Trust issue? If so how do I go about it? If not, what can be causing this? There has to be a 'hickup' somewhere right?!?!

    thanks for your help

  15. hey guys,

just wondering if anyone is having this weird problem. we're thikning some sort of ms update. today some users called complaning about their outlook 2007 freezing when clicking on teh paper clip to attach an item. eventually they get the "do you want to send the report to ms" and they have to close and open outlook.

they can drag and drop an attachment into the email windows without a problem. Even myself in IT experienced this problem.

are you guys having any issues?

all workstations are updated via system center 2007.

    thanks for your help.

  16. i love my xp.

i've tried vista and i just cant get the feel for it. I find it so much harder to navigate through menus and even finding the easy stuff like network connections.

the bad thing is that I am in the IT field....so eventually i will have to get down and dirty with vista and learn all the new troubleshooting techniques that i've mastered with xp.

  17. hey guys, how you doing?

at work the guy that handled the sql is no longer there so it's up to us to finagle it....errr....wing it!

anyways, we have a backup disaster recovery server in which we can backup the original db's from the live server and then restore on this backup server.

when the application opens it looks for the username and password of account located on the live server. I do not know the user/pass of these accounts since they had been created before i started and no one else knows them.

I am wondering if it's possible to migrate or copy the users from one server to another keeping the same permissions and passwords. This way when the application on a workstation or laptop opens it will see the username associated with the db and open up successfully

i hope i was able to explain myself correctly.

    thank you for your time,

    ceez

  18. ok we solved the problem after being down for about 1030 am to 505pm the next day....

it was a small compusa hub that someone had placed in a spare office for some outside consultants to come into the office and be able to get to the network.

it was creating mad traffic on the network and throwing it off balance. man I am so mad but happy that we were able to pin point the problem.

I'll look into the wireshark info.

  19. hey guys,

yesterday at 10.30am our network went to screaching halt. my network drivers got disconnected and everything just really slowed down. users had a hard time login in and if they were already looged in their computer would slow down because the network drives showed as disconnected.

if we perform our ping of our dns servers, dc's or even file servers we will get a mix of successfull requests and timeouts along the life of the ping (ping servername -t)

my first thought was OMG a switch or router have gone bad

    and my second

    our DNS just blew up!

the reason I am not leaning much towards dns is because we can resolve names and ips and that is pretty much the function of dns. if it WAS dns then we would not be able to ping the servernames and get the right ip or ping the IP and get the correct server name in return (ping -a servername)

we tried isolating the problem yesterday by using a different switch (out of the many), when that switch was unplugged rom the network the pinging reqeust between 4 servers and 1 laptop was perfect, when plugged into the main hp procurve switch it began dropping again. our network router guy called hp and they say that the drops are happening on the other end of the procurve, but how can that be if the test switch was working perfectly without it?!?!

either way, our router guy is calling hp again and we're stuck with a limping network.

what would you guys think it is?!??!

    hardware

    dns

    anything else?!?!

please I just need some extra input cause my coworker and i are just mush for brain after a long nite and now we gotta head back to work! :(

    thank you for reading!

  20. router level....I would have to talk to our "router guy", but can it be possible to just deny the downloads of torrent files from the router itself?

in regards to file screening, we have that setup but it's for network shares on the servers, cant apply those rules on desktops (that I know of).

There are so many 'gaps' in group policies that it stinks....you gotta purchase 3rd party software to do basic stuff that the regular gpo should be able to handle.

    thanks for the input guys,

    ceez
