  1. @extruckie, if you have that DNS changer trojan then you're in for a wild ride of desperation. no matter what you run, malwarebytes, hijack, av of any sort, spybot, reading on many of the forums that provide a handful of diff tools, etc...that **** thing wont leave. If you check your dns settings and you have an address that just wont go away then you have it.

I cleaned up a computer like that about 2 weeks ago. After fruitless tries, the best way to get rid of it was to take the drive and plug it to another computer (make sure that other computer is clean with AV & antispyware software up to date) and then perform a FULL scan of that drive with all the AV/antispyware software that you might have on it.

That's the only way that I got to get rid of it.

    good luck

  2. it could be your pagefile.

go to control panel-> system-> advanced tab-> performance settings button.

click on the advanced tab and you'll see your page file listed under Virtual Memory (lower part of the window).

recommended is 1 and 1/2 times your current ram. If you want you can change the location to another partition if you wish from the same window.

to clean up all your temp i use "CCleaner" and "Cleanup!", google each of them and you'll find your download locations, both are freeware.

  3. If I do an RMA they will charge me that stupid stocking fee which is 17 bucks UNLESS I replace the item with another of equal or greater value, in this case that $37 card would end up costing $54, no biggie though and I am still saving some money in the long run.

BUT looking at the comparison it seems like not much of a difference, the fan of the one i currently own is super silent and it comes with that dvi -> hdmi adapter!! :) oh the little things in life.

The only difference would be the obvious speed increase in bus speed of 2.5gps per lane of the pciex16 VS the single 1.06gps of a pci bus. And then why would this saphire be so much cheaper than the HIS when it's using much newer/faster technology?

  4. well I very surprised that all went well with tiger. mentioned the opened items, non compatible components and all I got was 2 mins hold time and got an RMA. Now for the bad part of taking it all apart and putting them back in their packages

crahak, followed your lead and this is what my newegg cart looks like:

I'll be damned, cheaper afterall. I'll be keeping my pci 512 HIS HD Radeon 2400 card and obviously will be adding my BR player, yet it's a dual core and not even a core duo....might be feeling obsolete in a year :(

Might have to play around with the mobo a bit to see what it supports.

Thanks again for all the help.

  5. yeah i would have to return the entire thing to them, I cant just swap out the board for another one since it's part of their "kit" and they would send me a replacement board...I actually could directly at the store but I might have to pay a difference and go directly to the store and not via cust serv RMA dept....wait, now that I think about it, the ONLY dd3 board per the tech there is a tripple SLI enabled board that was 239....I dont think so :(

If I cant get that bios flashed tomorrow after the cmos gets cleared overnight it will be fight time with their RMA department.

and back to that power on question, yet it happens every time, either when I click the switch on the PSU or if it's just on and I use the power button on the front panel. Every boot, quick spin, stop, power on. Could be that whole RAM issue.

  6. puntomx, I put the **** thing together. I honestly didnt want to spend any extra money and it sounded like a good deal. I am not an overclocker or a pc gamer so what I purchased is enough for my needs.

It sucks to have to take the whole thing apart and have to ship it back after waiting anxiosly for it for 9 days! :(

After less panic/frustration and more time to research I found that some people are having problems with that OCZ ram at 1.7v and OCZ is giving people RMAs. Yet that would not be my problem.

I also found out that Intel released a bios update on 12.10.08 whic adds better support for OCZ memory *AND* also for 1.7v memory.

But now for the kicker.... I took the system to Tiger and amazingly enough a nice tech guy listened to me and noticed that I am also in the IT field and he tried different brand ram (corsair I believe) at 1.5v, also swapped cpu with an intel q6600 and finally with a single DDR3 1.5v OCZ stick. Same freaking results!!!!

I dont know how that **** board booted those 6 or so times, but if I would of found out about the bios update beforehand I would of definitely applied it.

he also told me that he's noticed that most mobo manufacturers are having problems with the dd3 and that he gets a handful of customers with similar dd3 issues, incompatability and such.

tomorrow I am contacting intel directly to see if they can provide me with a mobo swap that includes their new 12.10 bios update since I doubt that this one has it. God knows how long tiger has had this mobo sitting in a shelf somewhere.

so I dont think I can blame tiger for the bundle since it is compatible memory, YET they should be aware of the bios upgrade issue and make sure that they have a fresh updated stack of mobos to ship.

for now, I am leaving the pc at the office with the cmos battery disconnected (intels site says to leave unplugged for an hour to clear, ha, never heard that one) but I am leaving it over nite to see if I can get lucky and troubleshoot some more tomorrow *disappointed*

    thanks

ps- so it is normal to push button, fan spins and slows down (quick on/off) and then startup?!?! weird.

  7. Hello msfn-ers!

I purchased the following barebones kit from tiger:

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/se...52&csid=_22

I added my br player + video card and cpu fan to complete the system

finished the build in 1 hour, all excited and then I get that dreaded black screen, no video, post or beeps letting you know the board is alive, yet everything else spins up

after troubleshooting by swapping out memory modules onto the different banks I was able to get a post and a beep about 6 different times between power off/on and then it just stopped working. I cant get the post or even a beep out of this darn thing again.

if I place the pair of rams on channel A dimm 0 and B dimm 0 I get power, fans spin up, power to hd and player but no post or beeps. If I leave one of the modules on A-0 the same happens. If I replace that module with the other I get the 3 beeps.

The funny thing is, that when I got it to post I did it with only a single dim on A-0 (and could even boot by placing on A-1, B-0 or B-1), placing the 2nd one would give me the same no post results. BUT NOW the one that was working beeps on me and the one that wasnt wont beep but get the no post results....confused.

So I am either thinking it's the board or the ram, but since I got it working with 1 stick it was probably a faulty pack in which the other one worked just for those 6 few times.

Also, when you press the power button I see the cpu fan and psu spin up, stop and then eventually kick in. Never seen such thing? Should I be concerned or are these systems built that way.

    I am at a loss.

    Thanks,

    ceez

    :thumbup

ps- and I've tried different vid cards, 2 pci cards and 2 pcie cards. I was only able to get it working those 6 times using one of the pci cards.

  8. nerwin, sorry for your loss man. I've had people close to me pass away and it's not easy but death is part of living, it's part of all living things, sometimes not at the right times though.

you will make it through and just dont forget whatever good memories you have of him, that's how you'll keep him alive in your thoughts.

be strong and may your family find peace and strenght during this difficult time.

  9. hello fellow msfn-ers!

I know about installing windows on a thumbdrive as a tool to boot into unbootable systems, but how about installing it permanently on a thumbdrive and using it on a daily basis?

I would like to be able to install either 32 or 64 bit XP along with AVG free onto an 8 gig USB, plug into my usb port, change bios to boot from usb and the rest is self explanatory.

I would just like to know if it's possible to install all other apps onto a sata drive without a problem. I assume that when the installer prompts for a location you just switch it to D:\Program Files\.... Is there a way to maybe do this automatically? Would there be any drawbacks to this setup? I know that there will be a 'bottle neck' when the OS is accessing programs from the sata drive (like outlook) but I am thinking that the OS itself would just scream booting up/shutting down and doing any other dirty job that the OS does.

    thanks again.

  10. wow i am amazed of how much you guys know about specs, i dont know how you guys memorize all this stuff but I am impressed and I thank you all for your input.

I am not a gamer so i think i'll be fine with that 500gigger (maybe my 350gigger is faster, i'll post what I have later :)). the 2gigs or ram should be fine for now but I know that I will soon upgrade that puppy. As long as I can finally play by br discs and browse the net i'll be fine! :)

    thanks guys

  11. Hello fellow msfn-ers!

I am getting a core 2 quad 2.6 barebone kit that obviously doesnt come with a cpu fan.

I am getting this kit from tigerdirect and will eventually get the fan there too before the kit arrives.

So from this list http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/ca....asp?CatId=1588 what would you recomend?

I was thinking either the 34.99 thermaltake or the 34.98 ultra

I will not be OC'ing at all, yet I dont want a cheap cpu fan. The reviews on most of these are mixed since some have had good and bad experiences. Yet I trust the review of fellow msfn members.

    thanks again for reading,

  12. crahak, thanks for that detailed post. who would of thought that trying to install a br player would end up being so freaking expensive. I think i at least should be fine with my 512 pci card....again, cant tell until it's tested, but again, that card is supposed to do HD. and what wattage psu? 500-600-700?

in regards to assu, funny, my coworker told me last week that his board had crapped out on him, today when i asked him about asus he's like no way, that's the board i was using. it also lasted him about 3 years.

  13. An E5200 (which is still at the bottom of the performance charts of today's CPUs) will still run circles around that P4 you have.

    man that's cruel.... :oP

Yeah I was being a bit more thorough on that processor spec finder and noticed the bunch of different cache, bus speeds and such.

I would probably look into a core2 quad combo (if costs permits) or else a core 2 duo starting at 2gigs or ram. That should be suffice for a hdpc right?!?!

thanks again for such educational posts, another good reason to be part of msfn! :)

    thanks guys!!!!

    :thumbup :thumbup :thumbup :thumbup :thumbup

  14. sorry guys, but I dont mean to go off in a different direction than what my original post was about, but I was looking at several mobo/cpu combos at newegg as well as intels processor spec finder and I am a bit confused about the many flavors and which one is better than the other...

core i7 is their newer one so obviously more expensive, believe it's a quad at heart. the extreme version I am going to assume it's just faster/efficient and more expensive

then there are the 2 duo desktop, 2 duo extreme, 2 quad. Some have similar same speed, so what's the diff begreen extreme and 2 quad

core 2 solo....just by the name i am thinking that's sooo last year or something.

I guess what I am trying to get to is what is the major difference between them since some share the same ghz, is it just the larger cache or bus speed?!!?

man I havent kept up with any of this stuff in long while!

    thanks again,

    ceez

    :thumbup

  15. @crohak, yeah i've read some articles stating about the same info, not as good yet....video looks great, yet player technology is bit behind.

The upgrade wasnt expensive at all, thankgoodness, at least i'll have a decent pc, just how it was pre-br but with a better video card.

Would part of the probem be cased because ii am hooked up to my 42" toshiba LCD? more display output power or smething ike that? Maybe play better on a regular 19" lcd with dvi input?

I know-i know, finding excuses....just live it.....it wont play unless I fork ouf or another pc that has dual or quad core!

  16. well i'l be d@mned again... I just tried playing the br again but this time with the task manager open and the cpu spikes like crazy when it starts the video.

I honestly thought that I could turn this little ol' pc into an hdpc with a decent vid card and by upgrading the 2.8 for a 3.4....stupid hyperthreading....useless! :(

so I just got myself a br player that dont play squat....man i am p***ed.

  17. d@mn it guys....this would totally suck. So you're telling me that a 3.4 p4 and a 512 vid card just dont cut the butter anymore?!?! that just plain ticks me off.

I was looking over again at the specs of that ati card and it has all the stuff you guy mention, the h.264 and the ati avivo technology, etc... check it out here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814161238

the BR player is this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827136154

and if this doesnt work out, well....I should of just forked out an additional 50 bucks to buy an actual player! >:o[

  18. hello everyone,

    I have a bit of a concern.

I have a dell dimension e310, 400W psu, 3.4ghz p4, 2gigs ram, 300gb hd, ATI Radeon HD2400. The CPU, PSU and Vid were recently upgraded along with an LG BR player from newegg.

I think my pc is capable enough of playing the video, yet when I play a br disk the video skips (along with the audio). If I insert a good ol' dvd it plays fine.

I was considering the thought of a bad BR player.

What is your take on this problem!??!

    Thanks for your input,

    ceez
