  1. And to add, it only spins the first times a disc is inserted after the PC restarts - after that, any disc inserted and it just blinks a few times and does nothing, not even spin. I've tried cleaning the lens too. Funny thing is, if I boot up with say an audio CD in the drive, it recognizes it. But if I eject it and put another disc in, it doesn't do anything.
  2. Hi all. I have an LG GSA-H20L combo drive. It was working perfectly, and I used it to burn a CD a couple of days ago without any problems. Today I wanted to play a DVD, so I put it in, it spins and the light blinks a bit, but then....nothing. I go to explorer and it just says "DVD-Ram Drive" and if I click on it, it says "please insert disk". If I try any others subsequent to that, it just blinks a few times, without even spinning. This happens with DVDs of all types, sizes, CDs etc....any media. I've tried setting autorun to both on and off. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the drive. I have updated it to the latest firmware too, all without having any luck. Any ideas what could have caused it....very weird especially since it worked 100% just a couple of days ago. Any other things you suggest I try to possibly resolve the issue? It is unfortunately out of warranty by a few months already. Cheers, X PS. Windows XP Pro, fully up to date
  3. Hi there. I read the tooltips indeed, but they say not to remove it if you are slipstreaming or using RyanVM's or Booogy's WMP addon, so I am not sure about what the case is if installing WMP after the OS installs.
  4. Hi all. As the topic says, I would like to install WMP 10 after the OS installation instead of using one of the addons (since I do not want such things as Windows Media Connect etc. Can I remove WMP 6.4 with nLite and then install WMP 10 after XP has installed or will it produce any errors? Cheers, X
  5. Hi all. I have been having an issue with my Windows XP SP2 system for a while now. I have set automatic updates to download but prompt me to install. I have another PC in the house with the same setting and it works perfectly. On this system however, I sometimes see the autoupdate icon in the taskbar but it disappears a few seconds later. Although on the odd occassion it has actually come up saying new updates have been downloaded, most of the time that never pops up and only when I go to Shutdown, does it ask to install updates and restart/shutdown. I always want to select the exact updates to install (hence not having the automatic download AND install option enabled) but doing it when shutting down does not allow this. I have tried all the settings; tried stopping and restarting the WUAUSERV service etc. to no avail. Any ideas why this is happening and how to fix it? Cheers, X EDIT: wanted to add that I checked the log and I see a lot of occurences like this 2007-02-14 21:12:58 792 a14 AU AU found 1 sessions to launch client into 2007-02-14 21:12:58 792 a14 AU 6. Hi all. I am going to be making a custom XP CD for my upcoming build. I will be using nLite to integrate such things as drivers, implement certain tweaks, set up various setting etc. I need to bring the OS up to date though, and just wondered what you guys would suggest: using Autopatcher after OS installation, or using nLite to slipstream updates (such as with RyanVM's update packs)? Also, any idea why the latest Autopatcher - with updates - come to around 400MB; whereas the RyanVM update pack is only around 45MB? Cheers, X
  7. Thanks for the quick reply! Looks like CPU-Z does the job (and it is great as it doesn't require an install). X
  8. Hi guys. Just a quick request - anyone know of a good, small, easy-to-use app I can use to identify RAM in a PC (Windows XP)? This is for some not-so-clued-up users so must be very easy to install/setup and run, and identify what they have (SDRAM, DDR333, DDR400 etc.). I think Everest used to do it but the home edition is discontinued. I asked them to try Windows System Info but that didn't tell them the type. Cheers, X Title edited -- Please, use [TAGS] in your topic's title. --Sonic
  9. Acronis TrueImage. Use the Clone feature.
  10. Thanks guys, works like a charm! I used Yzöwl's code. Only thing I notice (which I don't think makes a difference any way) is that it tries the rename for every single FOLDER, and not simply every instance of the file. What I mean is for example I have Artist Art with album Alb which has 3 CDs. I would have the directory structure Music\Art\Art - Alb\CD1; Music\Art\Art - Alb\CD2; Music\Art\Art - Alb\CD3. Only those 3 would have cover.jpg. The command would execute in those three, as well as in Music; Music\Art; Music\Art\Art-Alb. But like I said, doesn't really make a difference, just reports "cannot find specified file". Thanks again, X
  11. Hi All. I wanted to know if there is any built in XP app or command which allows you to rename files, but using the same name, not numbered. Let me give you an example: In my music collection, every folder which has an album in it has a cover.jpg file. I can find all of them easily by searching for cover.jpg but trying to rename them to lets say x results in x.jpg, x(1).jpg, x(2).jpg etc. What I want to do is rename them all to x.jpg which shouldn't be a problem as they are all in different folders. I also tried the REN command but it does not allow you to do it across subfolders, only the current working folder. I want to try keep away from nasty 3rd party apps if possible, so if it is a 3rd part app hopefully it is clean, spyware free and is just an executable without an installer/registry modifier. X
  12. Hi there. No need, xcopy works 100%. Since I know the files I wanted were all jpg files I used wildcard jpg instead of exclusions. In other words: xcopy c:\Music\*.jpg z:\Backup\Music /s /H Worked like a charm! EDIT: for future and other uses, is there any embedde windows app/command which allows me to compare two folders, to highlight differences? For example if one has new folders added, new files within existing folders, modified files/folders etc.
  13. Thanks for the replies guys! I will check up on XCopy and Robocopy now.
  14. Hi All. I want to copy certain files over from one hard drive to another one (which is in another PC but shared across the home network). Let me quickly explain quickly: I have all my music sorted out into an artist/album/songs structure. The backup has no album artwork, the main music collection does (added it over the past week or so) in a very structured way so that each album has a cover.jpg image in it. I want to copy these over to the backup drive now, but only want to copy the art work files (JPEG's) such that it copies the right files to the respective folders, as the structure is the same. Is there anyway to do this without copying everything (all files including MP3's)? X
  15. Reformat? Umm, no. Not install it? a. too late for that b. what's a decent alternative?
  16. Hi All. I always try to keep my registry and/or files neat, tidy and clean. Some programs which you install and then uninstall do so very cleanly, leaving no traces on your drive, registry, XP install etc. Some however leave things behind which you'd rather get rid of. One of these is Norton Internet Security (most versions but in this case version 2006). It leaves things in: registry; Program Files\Symantec directory, Program Files\Common Files directory; as well as in various areas of the Documents and Settings directories. These are not removed when you use Add/Remove. However there is the Norton Removal Tool, which also removes Norton 2006 version products now, and I was wondering if this is a better way to remove it. Alternatively, is there another way to remove it fully and cleanly (other than Add/Remove and then removing stuff manually)? Cheers, X
  17. Hmmm, must be something done by the admins during rollout. Guess the only way is to ask system admins about it, they must have globally disabled archiving. 18. Hey there fellow South African! I am also running Outlook 2003 with an exchange server, and have no probs with archiving. It is the same as I have at home without exchange: File-->Archive. I actually set archive settings for different folders and tell it to autoarchive every few weeks. Do you simply not have the archive option for some reason? X
  19. Hi there. I have slipstreamed the SATA drivers with nLite so that is taken care of I normally let Windows do it, but thought perhaps the Seagate tool would do it in some 'optimized' way.
  20. Hi guys. Got a brand new Seagate SATA HDD which will be used for my new Windows XP install. Just wanted to know if there is any difference and/or preference between allowing XP setup to format the drive, or to prepare the drive beforehand using the Seagate bootable CD (downloadable from their site)? Cheers, X
  21. Hi All. Did a fresh install of XP, with all the latest updates, WMP10 slipstreamed, lateset DivX codec, latest Nvidia drivers for 6600GT. Prior to system reinstall everything played fine. Now the videos are all playing black and white only! Any idea what is going on? I tried reinstalling the latest DivX codec to no avail. Also tried the ffdshow codec pack with no luck. WMP10 was slipstreamed so I cannot uninstall it and reinstall it, but there are no updates (says latest version is running anyway). Even when I run MPSetup.exe it says currently player is latest installed. I also tried the official DivX player and it too is problematic. Not entirely B&W this time but mostly B&W with some funny colors here and there. I have checked the VGA video overlay settings and everything is fine there. Cheers, X
  22. Hi there. Thanks for the response. I can do that, but I really wanted to try and find out what the cause of the problem is, in case I came across it again. I have already made another CD, but will leave that for if I cannot remedy the issue first I didn't do major tweaking with nLite, but did do some tweaking, which was very useful. Things like removing messenger, tweaking the tasbar and start menu, setting display settings. Most importantly was the integration of drivers, in particular SATA drivers (I have no FDD so installing Windows would be a pain due to the more complex means of integrating SATA drivers). One thing I suspect may be the issue, but am not sure: I read in some forums that the VGA driver is often responsible for standby disabling issue, something to do with conflict with ACPI. They say that the order needs to be: mobo drivers (I assume that is the VIA 4-in-1) followed by VGA drivers. But, the VGA drivers were installed with nLite, the VIA drivers came after the install, as it was a setup EXE, non-extractable. I thus plan, if I don't come right, to uninstall VGA drivers; reboot and install VIA drivers; reboot and install VGA drivers again. Any other suggestions as to what I can try? Cheers, X
  23. Hi All. My PC was quite messed unorganized and 'dirty' and it was definitely time for a fresh install. I re-installed XP SP2 using a CD made with nLite. I did not do any major mods (removing components that is) but used nLite just to integrate my SATA and video drivers and to integrate the latest hotfixes. Everything installed smoothly and everything is working 100%, except that now Standy is disabled in the shutdown menu (it was fine prior to reinstallation). I did not change anything in the BIOS (settings were already set up to allow AMD Cool and Quiet to run: ACPI 2.0 on, APM on, suspend mode S3). When I go into power settings in XP now there is no hibernate tab or APM tab. Also when I go into the device manager, under system devices there is no APM (not sure if it was there before but I came across it while searching the net to try find a solution). I also installed the VIA 4-in-1 driver package which comes with the motherboard, which did not help either. I also tried a suggestion I came across while searching to install the 4-in-1 first, and then reinstall my Nvidia graphics card driver, but still no luck. I did come across a little registry tweak which should enable it, but I want to try and figure out a 'clean' way to enable it (before the reinstall it worked fine without any need for registry editing). Any ideas what it could be? Cheers, X
  24. Hi All. The internet connection here is a wireless type which does funny things with ip addresses, so all those upload/download hosting sites don't allow me to download things. If anyone can host a few of the addons directly it would be really appreciated. I am looking in particular for: -Codec Pack All In 1 -Free Download Manager -Maxthon -Speedfan -Windows Installer -MSN Messenger (latest, I think 7.5) Thanks in advance, X
  25. Hi. Thanks again. Sorry about the FAQ - I do not get much time to browse and search here, as I am in South Africa with limited (dialup) access ATM, no broadband for me just yet
