FAQ | ASUS K8V SATA Driver (VIA VT8237) working?
xenithon replied to xenithon's topic in The General Stuff
Hi there. Thanks for the ultrafast reply! Just a few more very quick Q's: - does that driver that VIA released for all SATA controllers work with the K8V too? - can I slipstream these drivers using nLite, without the scripts in tha base? The reason I ask is because I do not want to slipstream with the base pack, then create the ISO with some tweaks in nLite which somehow conflicts with the drivers. In other words, should I a. use nLite, b. slipstream before using nLite or c. slipstream after nLite. Thanks for all the help and the fantastic driver packs! X -
Hi All. I have been out of the picture for a while in terms on unattended installs . I need to do a new CD with some slipstreamed additions. Thus far I have SP2, RyanVM's Update Pack along with some addons. The one thing I do not have sorted is drivers, in particular the SATA drivers. I have an Asus K8V with VIA VT8237 controller. I never managed to slipstream them last time around 7 months ago. I took a look at the changelog of the latest mass storage driver pack and saw something about VIA releasing a driver which works on all VIA boards: does that include tha K8V? Just to check two thing: 1. to slipstream the drivers I will need both the driver pack base and the mass storage driver pack, right? 2. can I still slipstream these together with nLite or does it need to be done separately? 3. after slipstreaming the drivers would I need to do any further modifications to text/ini/sys files or is all that taken care of (thanks to BTS ) Thanks in advance, X, South Africa

Quick Asus K8V SATA Driver Query (no RAID)
xenithon replied to xenithon's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
gee, like I wasn't expecting that. 'search' seems to be the predominant answer around here Bear in mind that I live in South Africa, and do not have 24/7 broadband connections like the rest of you! I thus cannot spend 2-3 hours searching, reading 100 pages and sifting. It is not that I am lazy or afraid to do so, but simply cannot. I have very limited time to access the net and even more limited time to dedicate to searching, thus I hope someone out there who has a K8V can help out. -
Quick Asus K8V SATA Driver Query (no RAID)
xenithon replied to xenithon's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
BUMP...anyone?? -
Hi Guys. I'm about to make a new CD which will hopefully be: -unattended -includes SP2 -includes updates for SP2 (Ryan's packages up to 1.2.2b) -integrate latest drivers which I just download for my onboard LAN, graphics card, onboard sound, VIA 4-in-1 chipset. The only thing I want to do, in order to ensure an unattended setup, is integrate my SATA driver. I have an Asus K8V motherboard and I am a bit confused. I currently use SATA1 which should be using the VIA VT6420. However I always see the VT8237 referenced, both on the forums and the manual. Is that only for RAID configurations? Is the VT6420 the same as the VT8237? I do NOT want to use the Promise RAID driver, and that is (has been since the beginning) disabled in the BIOS. I just downloaded the latest VIA SATA drivers from Asus and would like to integrate them using nLite. Thanks, X

Absolute Newbie - Hotfix Question
xenithon replied to xenithon's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Thanks for the clarification! I believe then (as per instructions on your site) that 1.2.2 is integrated with nLite, after which the 1.2.2b update is simply extracted to the i386 folder (no further integration needed, right), correct? Cheers, X -
Absolute Newbie - Hotfix Question
xenithon replied to xenithon's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Hi There. Thanks for the info - just what I needed . It is really jsut for personal use, for my own PC, so I guess it won't be a problem to install the SATA drivers at the beginning of the install and leave the rest unattended. I will try to integrate the SATA though for the experience . BTW do you perhaps know if they are not integrated, if I need to F6 at that particular point in the setup and insert my drivers, after which everything else is unattended; or would it ask me explicitly for the drivers? I have indeed seen Bashrat's driver packs and read up on them before. From what I saw, the VIA KT6420 does work succesfully which is great. If I cannot get my SATA to work using that doc you linked me to , I will definitely give his a go. Thanks once again for the great help and links, I'm off to do some reading, some downloading, some editing, some burning....hope it all turns out well B) EDIT: one last question I picked up quickly. You mentioned that for his 1.2.2b update you need extract the update to the I386 folder and double click on __integrate.exe. But on his site it says you should extract 1.2.2b RAR to i386 directory and delete __integrate.exe from i386 directory before making ISO. Does his directions simply leave the part out about actually running _integrate.exe (taken as implied)? -
Absolute Newbie - Hotfix Question
xenithon replied to xenithon's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Got that thanks. Will work through it. Hopefully I can manage Just wanted to ask once again my query re: not integrating SATA drivers. If I don't integrate them, is an unattended installation still viable (will the setup ask me or give me a chance to insert the drivers) or will it simply kill the setup and make the CD useless? Cheers, X -
HOTFIXES: Windows XP SP2 & Windows 2000 SP4
xenithon replied to Incroyable HULK's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Hi there, I was busy getting the update earlier today (the old, 40MB one) when it was deleted from the server and the download failed. Now I get this error: "Your IP-address *********** is already downloading a file. You have to wait until it is finished." But I am not downloading anything. Is there any way I can get the package? Will this error maybe clear itself in an hour or so? Thanks, X -
Absolute Newbie - Hotfix Question
xenithon replied to xenithon's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Thanks, appreciate it. I don't want to ask TOO many questions until I have attempted my first one. Unfortately the one thing worrying me (SATA) cannot be tested via a VM, but I have a new SATA drive so will use that for my testing, and subsequently for a complete fresh install using my own master CD. One small question I do have though - if I do not integrate the SATA drive (nLite or manually), will I still be able to use an unattended installation? Will it get to a point where I can 'F6' and choose the drivers which I copied onto a stiffy? Or if I decide not to integrate them does it mean that unattended is not an option. In that case it is still useful as I can integrate all the other drivers and hotfixes, but it simply won't be unattended. Cheers, X -
Absolute Newbie - Hotfix Question
xenithon replied to xenithon's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Hi There, Thanks for the prompt reply. I have actually just downloaded Ryan's 1.2.2 update pack as well as the latest 1.2.2b update (sans WMP9). nLite I wouldn't use to get the hotfixes (I don't believe does that anyway, right?) but only to integrate. Does it make a difference if I manually integrate Ryan's packages or do so via nLite? To me it does not make much difference as the instructions for manual integration seem fairly easy to follow as per his site. I don't believe there is any textfile editing required with his packs though, only the SATA driver integration. I am starting from the beginning really - having never done it before - and will do as I have seen in the guides and forums (although there seem to be sooooo many possible errors and different ways to fix them that it can be very confusing). Hopefully my KT6420 won't cause too many headaches. Cheers, X -
Hi All. First post finally, after about a month of in-depth reading and searching. As you can tell from my post count I am an absolute newbie. I have gone through many of the tutorials, guides etc. and am ready to prepare my first slipstreamed/unattended Windows XP installation CD (using nLite). The few topics I had to deal with and which I believe I know how to do is: -SATA drivers: I downloaded the latest driver for my VIA KT6420 on my Asus K8V motherboard, from the Asus website -Graphics drivers: I have the latest 77.12 Nvidia drivers for my 6600GT -LAN: I have the latest LAN drivers for the onboard LAN, which I downloaded from the Asus website -SP2: I already have a CD of Windows XP with SP2 so no need for separate SP2 The drivers I will simply integrate using nLite. I have never done all these text file editings I see a lot and not very comfortable with it (really don't want to mess things up which I believe is very easy to do) so hopefully nLite can help with that. I believe it will, right? Another big question has to do with Hotfixes. I was trying to find which hotfixes I need to download for post-SP2. I tried a number of methods as described in the guides but get very different results. I installed XP SP2 on a VM and run Hfnetchk and got these results (17 total): Patch NOT Installed MS04-041 Q885836 Patch NOT Installed MS04-043 Q873339 Patch NOT Installed MS04-044 Q885835 Patch NOT Installed MS05-007 Q888302 Patch NOT Installed MS05-009 Q887472 Patch NOT Installed MS05-011 Q885250 Patch NOT Installed MS05-012 Q873333 Patch NOT Installed MS05-013 Q891781 Patch NOT Installed MS05-015 Q888113 Patch NOT Installed MS05-016 Q893086 Patch NOT Installed MS05-018 Q890859 Patch NOT Installed MS05-019 Q893066 Patch NOT Installed MS05-025 Q883939 Patch NOT Installed MS05-026 Q896358 Patch NOT Installed MS05-027 Q896422 Patch NOT Installed MS05-032 Q890046 Patch NOT Installed MS05-033 Q896428 I also run Windows Update and got this result set which has 22 entries: Update for Windows XP (KB898461) Security Update for Windows XP (KB896358) Security Update for Windows XP (KB890046) Security Update for Windows XP (KB896422) Security Update for Windows XP (KB896428) Cumulative Security Update for IE for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB883939) Security Update for Windows XP (KB893066) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2005 (KB890830) Security Update for Windows XP (KB885250) Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835) Security Update for Windows XP (KB893086) Security Update for Windows XP (KB890859) Update for Windows XP (KB887742) Security Update for Windows XP (KB891781) Security Update for Windows XP (KB888113) Security Update for Windows XP (KB873333) Security Update for Windows XP (KB888302) Security Update for Windows Messenger (KB887472) Security Update for Windows XP (KB890175) Security Update for Windows XP (KB873339) Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185) Security Update for Windows XP (KB885836) I then, through further searching, found Astalavista's Link for post-SP2 hotfixes which I downloaded, and includes these: KB867282 KB873333 KB873339 KB883939 KB884020 KB885222 KB885250 KB885626 KB885835 KB885836 KB886185 KB886677 KB887742 KB887797 KB888113 KB888240 KB888302 KB890046 KB890047 KB890175 KB890859 KB890923 KB891781 KB893066 KB893086 KB893803v2 KB896358 KB896422 KB896428 There's also This Site Here which lists these: Critical Updates KB834707: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer KB873339: Vulnerability in HyperTerminal could allow code execution KB873374: Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool KB885626: Your computer stops responding when you restart to complete the installation of Windows XP SP2 KB885835: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel and LSASS could allow elevation of privilege KB885836: A vulnerability in WordPad could allow code execution KB886185: Windows Firewall "My Network (subnet) only" scoping KB890175: Vulnerability in HTML Help could allow code execution KB890830: Malicious Software Removal Tool February 2005 KB867282: Cumulative Security Update for IE for XP Service Pack 2 KB873333: Security Update for Windows XP KB885250: Security Update for Windows XP KB886903: Security Update for .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 KB888113: Security Update for Windows XP KB888302: Security Update for Windows XP KB890047: Security Update for Windows XP KB891781: Security Update for Windows XP Recommended updates KB831240: Update for HighMAT support in the Windows XP CD Writing Wizard KB884020: Loopback IP address range problem KB885222: Performance of 1394 devices may decrease after you install Windows XP SP2 KB886677: Corrupt DBCS characters in Internet Explorer on Windows XP KB887742: Stop error "Stop 0x05" in Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server 2003 KB887797: Cumulative Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP KB888240: Add-ons not listed in Internet Explorer on Windows XP SP2 KB890831: Input Method Editor disabled when using MSN Messenger in Windows XP SP2 There's also the sticky on these forums which lists 23 hotfixes, some of which are different. And also RyanVM's Update Pack which is only up until May but has so many more hotfixes (around 40-50 I believe). Is any one of these preferred/more trustworthy over the other? If I slipstream hotfixes and there are still some outstanding after the installation, is there anything wrong with that? Is it simply a matter of autoupdating whatever is missing and deemed required by Windows? Thanks again for the fantastic site! I will give this a go sometime this weekend. The only thing I fear really is the SATA driver which I see can cause so many problems and often requires a lot of editing of txt and other files, which scares me Cheers, X
