  1. Hi, thanks for your reply. One thing though, what is the Router lan Port and subnet mask address for then? Cheers
  2. Hi, I have "purchased" 5 static IP's from my isp (BT). I have a draytech Router, which I have tried puting the supplied details into, but alas no joy. I can get it to connect, but I am going round and round in circles, and I dnt find BT's "FAQ" helpful. I am unsure as to the correct method for setting this up. Bt Supplied the following details: Router:XXXXXXXXX@HG26.btclick.com IPADDRESSES XXX.XX.XX.XXX to XXX.XX.XX.XXX Subnet Mask: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX Router lan Port XXX.XX.XX.XXX - this is one above the last Ip address ie XXX.XX.XX.XX2( router lan port is etc.XX3) I ran router config, I specified Static IP, I put in one of the addresses from the range above, the subnet mask I entered as supplied by bt, and under Gateway I put the Router Lan port address, ie one given by bt. But after this goes in, router connects one thing I dont understand is GW IP Addr Vs PPPoA/IP. When I have the above settings in, the GW IP ADDR (what ever that is) is the Router Lan port address supplied by BT, and the PPPoA/IP is the one I enter when asked what IP my ISP has given me. My server, (WIN2k3SBE) carrys out DNS, I have Re-run the Internet config wizard, puting in the new DNS that is issued, but still no Internet access on network. I am forced to clear the settings, and choose Dynamic again, and then everything works, I am assigned an address, sometimes in similar style to static one, other times completely different, eg 82.xxx.xxx.xxx V's 218.XXX.XXX.XXX. I am in desperate need of someones help with this. The exact router is Vigor2600 plus. Which works fine other than this. Many Thanks Gekko
  3. How can I get the clients to automatically map printers on the server, I tried the following but it didnt seem to work. Mapping them manually works fine. net use LPT1: \\logi\epson2 net use LPT2: \\logi\epson1 net use LPT3: \\logi\HP1 Above was included in Bat login script. Other lines in script work fine. I ran it from command line, and it claimed LPT1 was already in use. even though no printers were installed. I assume the printer set as LPT1 is default? Many thanks
  4. I have a 30 user network running on XP prof clients and SBS2003. We upgraded our server, to new model, same SBS2003 OS. Old Server, I was going to use as Print server/App server. I have now found out it must be a DC to exist, ie I did a DCPROMO to make it not one, now it shuts down ever 3 hours. So.. im wondering what are my best options. Should I install server 2000 edition and use this as app server? Would this then require me to re-buy a new set Of Cal’s? ie because I have sbe2003 ones at the moment? Can I run SBSE2003 as another domain with current one? I am unsure of the best and most cost effective way to do this.
  5. cheers guys, makes sense now. One thing though, could I have router DHCP running at same time... or would I have to just turn this on in event of a failure? I would imagine it wouldnt work at the same time, ie due to the fact how would the machine know where to grab ip from, or would it only look for another address if initial one was unavailable? I thought with DHCP one it issued an address ie 192.168 etc then went down, the machine would still be able to function.... but obviously not. THanks again.
  6. I have a dc which runs Small Buisness server 2003, Currently, It is a dhcp/dns host. When a client is logged in they can surf the net fine, but I had an idea, that say, worse case server goes down, they would loose their internet connectivity. So, I entered 2nd DNS as the one from isp.... but this dosent work, should I be puting my routers Ip here to allow internet access to work when server is down?
  7. So.. how is best way to go about this? Can I get a domain name, and create email add off that? This is a new area to me... as u can tell?
  8. Hi, I have setup a new SBS2003 Edition server, I am trying to get the Exchange technology system working, but I am going round in circles. I have users with various email addresses which are pop3 accounts with another company. so eg: Andy@microsoft.com details - mail.microsoft.com smtp@microsoft.com and a password. How do I transfer this accross so the sbs does all the work... I have it working for downloading email, but when they try and send I get - "microsoft.com Reco[ient:relay not allowed" bouncing back at me.. Help! Thanks
  9. Hi, I have a main office, with windows server 2003 machine. This is the domain controller for the main office, with around 25 client machines using it as a file store etc I have a smaller office, some many miles away. Which has a small XP machine acting as a central file server. There is around 4 clients down there. This small file server backs up its contents via a VPN connection (PP??) somthing to the main server. Works fine. Both offices have ADSL broadband. I have found if I have more than pc with a VPN connection in small office, the line drops etc. I have been advised it is out current router - a known fault. If I try more than one connection from another site (Linksys rotuer + Cable Broadband) it works fine. Currently we have 2 x Netgear ADSL firwall routers (one at each site). I am about to purchase 2 x DrayTek Vigor 2600Plus routers. Which I have been told are perfect for the job. I wish for each office to be able to see each other fully, that is All the machines "think" they are on the same network, all can access main server in head office/small file server in small office. I beleive this is known as "Lan to Lan" VPN??, I would like a small guide of how to set this up. I also found out that the VPN protocol that I am using has next to no encryption, so any help on how to do this would also be appreciated. I can be contacted via email, PM or this post. Many thanks Gekko.
  10. Hi, I have to purchase around 30 copies each of the above software, its for a company in the UK. Can anyone shed any light on the best way to do so, ie companys etc, as so far I havent found anyone who will offer decent price other than the per unit price. Cheers
  11. Hi, It seems this is the Place to be for VPN's! I am using a netgear router, I have it setup as described in guide above/over page. One client at a time works perfectly, if I try more than one client behind the router conecting to the vpn server, each client drops a connection, basically I can only get one client on at a time. My main question is how do I set it up so everyone in the smaller office Downsouth can see the Machines in the larger "head" office, and vice versa? DO I Set a VPN server up down in Sat Office the same way as it is setup in Headoffice? Cheers Gekko
  12. Thanks for the reply. The SC command is very helpful. I have managed to Lock the services Database using SC Lock. But this only applys when the window is left open. Is it possible to make this change current, I would imagine, on a restat, even if you were to use a bat file at startup, the lock would only apply once all the services had been loaded. I.e. if I install service pack with Lock on, then it restarts any services that were held down by the lock would then be able to start, then the lock would come in to play. Also could you go into more detail concerning parsing the Event Log. Ie how would I go about doing this? Cheers Gekko
  13. Hi everyone, anyone know a way of obtaining a list of services running in the background of a machine, but also the date/time these were started\stopped and the ver numb? would prefer it to be a script/bat type operation. Basically I want to know what services have been started/stopped by service pack installs on our Server Box. Our 3 servers are running win2k server and 2 x win2003 server. Cheers for comments peeps Gekko.
  14. I can here the pages of the "dummies guide to server 2003" being licked lol
  15. I find Norton Ghost both corp and 2004/5 ver life savers! the boot disks/options are good.
  16. Hi, My other post touches on this issue, http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=51294 I have Device CALS, is this the same as per seat/computer?
  17. Hi everyone, I have ordered a new Server (win2003 SBE based). Our current server is at its limits. I am trying to work out the best method of “installing” it into our network. Our company is relatively small (35 Users). Our current server (server2003SBE) based, has cal Lic installed etc. Now, do I need a whole new set for this new server? I was planning, ideally, to leave the old machine on as ftp server/backup domain. Making the new server a new domain eg current domain XJR, so new domain would be XJR2. But we cant afford a whole new set of cals, so If I do have to buy a new set I cant do it this way. All the users Data is on Old server, copying this across is no problem. Basically im looking for your thoughts/ideas on the best way to go about this. Also, does anyone here know about the exchange features that are built into Server2003SBE, as I haven’t got that setup currently, but I am hoping to when we get the new box. Cheers Andy
  18. Within the Policys manager, there is one which determines if users are allowed to install/uninstall drivers and/or Hardware. Im sure this had to be allowed for users to use removabale drives, as when it is plugged in it is being installed. again, Im not 100% sure this is correct. I will look into it and get back to you.
  19. I may be wrong, but im sure I remember in the past it somthing to do with installing/updating drivers/hardware being allowed via policys. Again, this is just of the top of my head.
  20. If it only going to be used as a file store, then yes XP pro is fine. But this is dependant on the number of users you have. Ie server Os makes managing high numbers of users easier. Issue of remote control, you would need monitor etc at first to setup OS and remote control software, but yeah this could be done via laptop. Windows XP/Server 2003 has built in software for this (remote desktop Client) or you could use third part one, I prefer TIghtVNC but there are a few variants of this (real VNC, Ultra VNC to name a couple). Google each of these shall reveal all. Cheers Andy
  21. Sorry guys, Ive been away for awhile. See, my main reason for using router as DHCP was so in the event of server falling on its arse, users could still surf the net via local accounts. But, would this still work, ie if server fell over, would they clients just keep the assigned addresses and be able to surf? I had to restart the server recently, and the clients couldnt surf the internet. When I tried using static IP's, the logins would take 7min+!!! for some unknown reson, using server as dhcp solved this. But now that I have learned more, and the system is more established, I would like to refine it a little more. Cheers
  22. Hi everyone, Is it better to leave the job of DHCP + DNS to the router or to the server 2003 Box, which is also running AD. I am also wondering if it is just best to use router for dns, and use staic ip's. Your thoughts? cheers Andy (1st time poster)
