  1. Thanks Guys, I will try this over the weekend and report back. Many Thanks Gekko
  2. Agh, Could this possible be where me problem is then? I have the DC (DNS/DHCP/AD) - 192.168.5.5. I have the router - 192.168.5.10 On the server the Network config is - IP - 192.168.5.5 Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0 Gateway - 192.168.5.10 DNS1 - 192.168.5.10 DNS2 - blank. The clients are setup as IP - 192.168.5.X Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0 Gateway - 192.168.5.10 DNS1 - 192.168.5.5 DNS2 - blank. Should the server DNS point to itself then? Would this be causing the problem detailed above? Cheers Gekko
  3. Hi, Thanks for the reply. The Client machines DNS is provided via the DHCP service on the server and points to the DC (192.168.5.5). The DC network config has its DNS as the Router. Cheers Gekko
  4. Active Directory Lag --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Seasonal Greetings Everyone! I have a strange problem that is happening with my Servers. I have a server (Dell 2900) with Windows Server 2003 R2 on it. It is running as a DC, with DHCP,DNS,and Active Directory present. I have roughly 45 Clients attached, running happily. BUT..... I have noticed (and did from day one) that if I am administrating Active Directory ie resetting password, disabling accounts etc it tends to lag. for example. I was asked by a user to reset her password, so I went to server, active Director screen>Right clicked her name>properties and ticked "user must change there password at next logon". So she logged out, then back in again but it didnt prompt her, on loggin in she could access her network drives, so in other words the server/AD was waiting on the passwiord change but it had not instructed the client to prompt for it. At this point I got her to restart her PC and it prompted her at that stage. Additionaly, when browsing the AD screen it tend to lock up/take awhile eg if I right click on a user nothing happens then after a short time I get the expected meny appearing. Now.... the plot gets thicker, I setup another server at a different site (which is in no way connected to this site) and the same thing is happening. Is it the way I am configuring the Server? I have been following the same template for years now as to my setups so I cant see what I am doing wrong. Somtimes it seems to be fine, ie I went to server couple of mins ago and could browse AD in "real time" but then after a coulpe of mins it was doing as described above. Event Logs are all clear... I am at a loss so if anyone can offer any words of wisdom I woudl greatly appreciate it. Specs for server are Del 2900 2 x 2.3Xeon Cpu's 6 x 300GB RAID 5 Disks 4 GB Ram Windows Server 2003 R2 + all the available secruity updates Any further info req please ask. Many Thanks Gekko
  5. Hi, I have a office LAN with around 40 users. We currently have a DC running DHCP/DNS (win 2k3). This handles internet access with Draytek router providing a basic form of monitoring. I would like to implement a higher level of monitoring and restrictions. We would like to be able to block certain access to certain users, we would also like the functionality of users having to provide username/password before internet access is granted. I have looking into Squid a little, but I am not very confident in the Linux enviroment as of yet, so I am looking for some advice from you, my fellow IT Guru's. Regards Gekko
  6. http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor3300v.html I use these in my offices they are affordable, reliable and easily installed. You would have to couple a router for each line, but these can be any kind of router. Again for this I recommend Draytek ones, but up to you. Cheers Gekko
  7. Web host? Do you mean FTP? That dont work, but mapping to an Apache Login does.
  8. Thanks for replies. You can map a drive to a webhost. mapping a drive to my apache server worked. Cheers.
  9. Thanks for the reply. Can you recommend any way of doing out of house storage? ie could I use a web host and map a drive to it?
  10. Hi, I have 7 offices, all of which require access to central file store. Currently we use a lan2Lan VPN to a win2k3 box, which works, mapped drives to store. But it is Very Very slow as its running over a Bog Standard Broadband. Now we cant afford to get Faster connections ie Fast Upload and Download in each office, so I was looking into Out of House storage possibly. Can anyone shed some light on the possible routes/ways of doing this. We are a UK company. We require Secure and fast access to these documents. Which Vary in size considerable. Would it be possible, for example to have a Hosting package with a company and map a drive to it this way? Or can anyone who is in the UK suggest a Fast and cost effective "Broadband" style connection which would allow fast upload and download speeds. Many thanks in advance Gekko
  11. Dont mean to Post Hijack but... Is it possible to change where the site stores its info. Reason being, our SB server came installed by manufact, hence OS partion is 6GB, and the APPS drive is 55GB. So... Im wanting to move where it stores all information to do with the Companyweb onto Apps Drive. I.e when people fill up the calander/add photos to Staff Photos section, I dont want the 6GB partition to suffer.
  12. Well, when I do that I get weird Errors in Event log and also I find accessing domain resources can be very patchy.
  13. When you say "tell clients to disjoin.. etc" what do you mean? Is there a quicker way of doing it than having to ground them all manually? If so please explain.
  14. Right, A) Sorry if this is wrong place to post, but couldn’t work out best place. B) Sorry for it being such a long post. I have two offices, one with 6 members of staff (sat office) one with around 30 (Main office). In Main office I have Win2k3 Small Business Edition server, running as DNS/DHCP etc. In Sat office I have Heavy Duty Desktop box running as a file server (running xp prof). In each of these offices I have 2mb ADSL (s*** upload). We run a LANtoLAN vpn between these offices, but it is Slow as hell, but enough for what we need it (remote desktop support, overnight file dumps) Now Our mail/domain is hosted by an out of house provider. I am having problems working out the best way to manage our email. Currently all users, use pop3. I thought about looking into exchange, (small business comes with cut down form of it). But I don’t know how to get by the Slow speed between offices, i.e. if I have email server in Main office, then mail would have to be retrieved from our main office by the sat office over ADSL.. Which is not too bad, until you start getting large attachments, which they do. Now I thought about moving PST files onto a shared drive, but then I thought of overhead traffic on networks ) In sat office it isn’t as much of a problem, but in Main office, I thought it may put a bit of a strain on it. Also, I would imagine it would mean if Server is down, email would not be able to be seen. Basically I am looking for a way to have a mail server at each site, that will contact the Out of house provider and download their mail to a locally stored mail box, which can then be retrieved internally by the client. This meaning only one “send/receive” is going out the building at certain periods (eg every 5 mins). This would then give me a central place to store all the mail for backups. Also mean if someone jumps to new machine they just have to point to the correct mail server… Is this possible, if so how… Many thanks for any help you can offer, Obviously a solution that uses a free pop3 mail retrieval would be good, and if it allowed spam to be removed, all good and well. Andy
  15. Just for your info. I have a near Identical Setup as you..... and I have the exact same problem. I would not let the DOS Via GUI compraision confuse you, ie if you look at your C drive in Windows and then in MSDOS you shall notice that DOS is quicker here - for the same reasons as someone else mentioned. I just put this problem down to my connection....... but as you said, you have a connection similar to mines.. good luck mate Cheers
  16. Thanks for your reply. I was saying about the name because I wasnt too sure if I was calling it by its correct name. Basically I want to move where it stores all its information onto the Apps Drive, as I worked out we have roughly 5GB of files we wish to make available on it. Cheers
  17. I have Widnows Server 2003 SBE. It comes with a facility to Build a website/intranet site and host it on the box. I have created a small website, which is accessed only localy. For company news etc. Works a Treat. One thing I noticed today, I bought our server from DELL. It came with the OS installed. The OS Partition is 12GB, which I only have 3GB of this left. The other Partition of the C Drive, I have made an APPS Drive, where I install all my apps onto ie for use on the server. Is it possible for me to move where this website is stored onto the App Drive? Reason being, people are uploading photgraphs etc, and I am worried that the C drive will soon become full. If I am wrong as to the name of this facility, A clue may be in that if I navigate to the IP of my Domain Controler, I then choose "My web site" or somthing similar which then takes me to the website. (Obviously I reference the website diferently for the clients). Many thanks for your help
  18. By that do you mean, if deny and allow are both set, Deny will be applied? Thanks for your reply. Cheers Andy
  19. Hi, Is it possible to Stop Users from Deleting files off the server. I want them to be able to Save new copies and make new files, but not delete what has been created? It would also be handy for me to be able to specify certain number of yours who Can Delete things. I know it would be done through user permissions, but I am un sure as to the exacts. thanks Gekko
  20. Thanks, will check it out tomorrow.
  21. I have a win2k3 SBE server, running as Domain Controller. Client machines log on both locally and via VPN during the day (static IP'S) I was wondering if it were possible to Log who logs in when, and what they access ie local files/Dir. Cheers Andy
