  1. BitTorrent is up and away !!!! I got 40 kbps going up ... my emule customers will be a bit miffed ... Drugwash, you use shareaza do you? IF not, tell me so I can give someone else my friend slot ...
  2. Maybe check the torrent again, I've changed some settings that could have been blocking attempts. Also, starting the seeding process could help out as well (!! talk about a newbie !!) --- I also fixed the TCP limit bug (my file sharng computer has only just been rebuilt --- yes that's right, an entire computer to serve the cause of file sharing.) I'll also try rapidshare today, I'll do the split into parts, I know what you mean. All my overnight uploads failed. I had 2 going .... grrrrrr
  3. http://sharethefiles.com/forum/ed2kstats.p...iew_release.exe OK, the limitation of the program at the moment is that only one file in each package is checked for its file version. If I choose the wrong one (usually its obvious which one to use) then we get into trouble. So its these things that I can't test until I get feedback. The code definitely works for clean systems, but I guess some that have been up for years will have all sorts of junk on it doing who knows what to whichever. Or something ... I'll make the change for the next version, definitely.
  4. Oops... it was supposed to be there a couple of hours ago Now fixed... and with a BitTorrent link as well to make up for the wait ..
  5. Another 24/7 emuler ... good on you man. Have you ditched your TV like I have? I got rid of it 6 years ago, and I don't consider it a loss, as I get everything I watch from the mule. If anybody is still watching ads, paying megabucks for music, megabucks for softare ... then get with the program. You DO need to know how to forward ports if you are behind a router or gateway, and you DO need to start collecting credit so as your downloads can run like water through a pipe. I reckon I'm one of the wealthiest people in the world when it comes to emule credits. When I want something from the network, bam, i've got it. Emule, emule, emule ... i do NOT KNOW what I would do without it. Everyone, take the HINT!!!
  6. welcome to the battle of the century: my fight to get a 244mb file up onto a free file server. I'll keep the stats of this batte updated frequently No of failed uploads: 4 No of different file hosters: 2 No. of times it got to over 80% and then failed: 3 No. of times it got to over 95% and then failed: 2 No. of times it got to over 99% and then failed: 1 No. of hours of wasted upload bandwidth (at about 20kbps): 8 No. of times I've wanted to do something nasty to the people behind these websites: 3
  7. This is EXACTLY what I need to see to improve auto-patcher. Thank you very very very very very very very very (you get the idea) much. Yes, the DirectX install can distinguish between August and October. That should work. The rest I'll check ... I have improved the code for DUN 1.4 so v1.8 should already have that fixed. I'll check the rest out ... I'm uploading v1.8 to a public server as I type so grab that ASAP and use that for further testing.
  8. wow, you're prepared to wait days for chkdsk to finish?? I get worried when I wait more than 10 - 15 minutes... apart from what has already been said --- you need to establish a hardware checking routine --- anytime you experience weirdness from your system, especially if it looks hardware related, you need to run your standard tests. Check the hard disk for bad sectors, do a RAM test, and so on. I use a variety of tools, but the first one I go for is the Ultimate Unattended Boot CD v3.4 which has all the tools I generally need.
  9. IF you ever see that a file is missing that should be there ... its a good idea to check out the health of your hard drive. Have you done a surface scan and confirmed no bad sectors?
  10. yes, this may be the problem. Good luck with the development ...
  11. Well said. Critical but encouraging. No wonder you're a moderator !! And thanks for the info re: LOCATE.COM -- i'll try your code out and hopefully use it. I'll send you the finished code if it all goes good.
  12. OK, i'm surprised no-one's given explicit feedback on how testing Jackhammer out went ... here's mine: 1) I like the boot screen --- everyone's familiar with the Windows XP style, so its good to see some familiarity. 2) why am I locked out of the 'administrator' profile? What is the password? Is this normal? How is the user supposed to be happy installing Jackhammer if they are locked out? 3) not having an ATI or NVIDIA video card: ---- it seems that this is a REQUIREMENT not just recommended. I have a video card that is normally recognised by Windows 98 se setup, but under Jackhammer I have to install the correct video driver myself after some hassle. Is this normal? Why would this be so ... ?? 4) with regard to creating a floppy boot disk to install Jackhammer: --- surely there's a way to only use the CD-drive. I was wondering why this approach was used, and my first thought was that this method would be good for all computers that can't boot with a CD, but what about people who have ditched floppy drives? I would have kept those people happy as opposed to keeping people with systems that can't boot from a CD happy. I'm happy to help make this improvement if you agree ... 5) system.ini settings assume that the hardware is pretty recent (ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1) --- may cause grief for those with hardly any RAM --- Fair enough the system recommendation is at least 256mb but the reasoning why this is imposed upon the user is absent from the documentation. Why restrict this project in this way?? Quite a few people would look towards a Win98 OS for their older computers, and if their hardware is good enough, then they (or should I say I) would go with WinXP --- so if anything, the project should go out of its way to accomodate lesser hardware systems. 6) in terms of a fully patched and updated computer, my auto-patcher project has a function that searches for any updates missing from the system. I ran the report and to be honest, I wasn't expecting to find so many missing updates. Unfortunately my report function has had very little feedback from others on this forum (i think only 3 people posted the reports from their system) so it could be wrong, but then again as my project ONLY installs updates if the system needs it, the months and months I spent on the code getting this right should be taken seriously. There are some updates I'm SURE jackhammer has included (ie both the latest unofficial & official cumulative updates for IE 6 sp1 are missing) so this could be very useful in improving the code in auto-patcher. EDIT: it seems some of them are due to WinME files but this can't account for all the above ...? EDIT 2: the tile of this post contains the phrase: "The last update you'll need for Win98" ---- at the moment, this claim is completely and utterly ridiculous. Please prove me wrong ... APART FROM ALL MY CRITICISM ABOVE, THIS PROJECT IS STILL AWESOME .... just needs a little (or a lot of) tweaking EDIT 3: well, if I could get at least high color video on my test system I would be happy. Its been 30 minutes since I started to try to get my video card to work, the settings just won't save - it always reverts back to 16 colors - NOT GOOD!! This is a card that works fine with a normal install of Windows 98. So in this case, installing JackHammer is a step BACKWARDS from simply using the normal install CD. It looks like I'll be sticking with my unattended boot CD for sometime yet. Don't take my criticism the wrong way --- I would theoretically like to use Jackhammer... still. EDIT 4: these edits just keep on coming on ... why does it say "The driver software you have chosen to install may not have been tested by Microsoft to verify that it works properly with Windows MILLENIUM edition" (my capitals) --- can we keep that crap OS out of the equation?? There is a very good reason I've done all this work on 98se and NOT Me --- looks like this project could lose the schizophrenia --- which OS does it think it is? EDIT 5: lets see how many edits I can get in before the first post after this one.... one really really annoying thing is not being able to automatically reboot and restart a program ... ie my auto-patcher ... I keep having to click thru the password stage of bootup ... I can probably turn it off, but anyone else not a computer-head is going to be really frustrated... EDIT 6: I have fixed the video card problem by installing a driver from 1995, and then letting the system find the normal driver from 1999 ... it seems I had to first entirely replace the existing driver before the system would accept my normal driver and video settings ---- now why would that be?
  13. More info on that Windows Explorer bug I reported recently --- it seems it was the test system I was using - there was already an earlier version of MDGx's killer WMP replacements and so I uninstalled it, the bug went away, I re-installed the latest WMP pack and no bug. Yay.
  14. I've added some information to the readme.txt file but what I should also do is name the updates so the USER can relax in that the 7 updates that WU reckons are needed are named and shamed beforehand. you don't need a medical reason ... as you well know!! I thought the comments by singer George Michael were good ... he said that if his drug of choice was alcohol he wouldn't be nearly as healthy as he is from being a pot head instead, in terms of how much he's taken over the years. He said if he had, he'd look and sound like Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones ... anyway, don't get me started, especially not about this question of who parents want their kids to have relationships with, ie the government in the form of taxed regulation, or drug dealers and organised crime.... we gotta legalise it obviously ...
  15. serious? .... well if I went with stereotypes, a spliff would be something a hippie passes you to smoke at a party... B) i'll have a look and no i didn't get any errors to do with powrprof.dll The good news is that v1.8 is just about ready to go. This is basically my preview release as it now comes with an installer and uninstaller, and the final release I hope to spread far and wide. The final will probably be the last version for a long while, barring any big bugs that I should fix, so get your feedback in now !!! The change log will eventually record all the changes from v1.7 ... stay tuned ... oh and I gave up on my project for this project to be in perfect harmony with Microsoft's Windows Update, i mean, what was I thinking? If i didn't have 1,543,788 other things ahead of it in priority, i'd be working on it right now, honest!
  16. just wanted to say I can't wait to try this project out .... excellent work, regardless...
  17. I was guessing from what I was doing at the time. I thought SHELL98 was a good candidate for being the culprit as it looks like something to do with shell32.dll being incompatible somehow. So don't quote me on that (even though you can cause that's what I wrote). The problem is I can't reproduce the bug on demand. Yeah sorry about that environment warning at the start --- the values I set to trip the warning are completely arbitrary and the problem is that if I add more options and modules to auto-patcher, then more environment space gets used. So the problem stems from the 1.7 update -- i didn't increase the value the triggers the environment space warning. I would guess that its saying you are only a few bytes over the limit anyhow and as you've seen, the program works fine. The REAL value for problems with environment space should be 2048 which is a long way away from what you should be experiencing. I'll make this change in 1.8 --- just so you know, my thinking was that if I gave a very narrow environment space range as the values of what the user should be experiencing, then anything different would have alerted them to a problem before trying to run auto-patcher. I didn't want auto-patcher to spit the dummy in the MIDDLE of doing its thing. Do ya mind if I nip something in the bud? The first few times I didn't bother thinking it was a typo...[i typed "dict soporific" into firefox] sop·o·rif·ic (sŏp'ə-rĭf'ĭk, sō'pə-) pronunciation adj. 1. Inducing or tending to induce sleep. 2. Drowsy. n. A drug or other substance that induces sleep; a hypnotic. if you met me in person, you would very quickly find out how appropriate my online name is. [i typed "dict soperific" into firefox] Spell Check Did You Mean: soporific hypnotic sapor specific saporific sleep (condition – in medicine) This probably hasn't happened to you too often, there's not much you can get wrong with only 3 letters to your name
  18. Hmmmm, i hope its cosmetic but i'm now wondering why I sometimes (very rarely) get this behaviour with Windows Explorer (I think it happens when I install SHELL98) --- all the drop-down menus aren't available and I cannot return it to normal --- has anyone else seen this? substitute spliff for beer and i'll join you.
  19. Just to clear up confusion, the 98 to Me included in auto-patcher is only the core of it --- only 3 files get updated and so i wouldn't expect and/or want the version to say anything other than Windows 98 second edition. Here's a screenshot of my test system after everything in auto-patcher is installed:
  20. OK lets try to clear up some confusion!! if you type VER in a DOS box in any Windows operating system, you get the version of the operating system. In Windows 98se it should read: Windows 98 [Version 4.10.2222] and if you do the same for Windows 98 gold (or first edition) it should say: Windows 98 [Version 4.10.1998] for more info on Window 9x versions go here: http://users.iafrica.com/c/cq/cquirke/win95ver.htm - even if you applied every single update you could get your hands on, if you have Windows 98 first edition installed, it should still be Windows 98 first edition at the end. You can confirm this by typing VER into a DOS box. and in other news, I HAVE JUST HAD A BRAINWAVE !!! The most annoying thing about this project is the confusion generated when visiting Windows Update after completing a full auto-patch of your system. WU says there are still at least 7 updates your computer needs which is a pile of doggie doo doo, as absolutely NOTHING of value is added to your system after installing these "missing" updates. Anyway, while researching why this happens to one particular hotfix (323172) i noticed that the INF file that is left behind after the hotfix is installed was missing when WU checked my test system to see if the update was needed. When the hotfix was first installed, the INF file is copied over to the \INF folder in the Windows directory, but it seems that some of the subsequent hotfixes delete the INFs for updates that are superceeded. I haven't confirmed this for any other updates, but it does give me an idea: put the INFs back !!! I may have to use the registry entries that are created for some of the hotfixes, but i'm hoping I can just use the INFs. I'll report back probably tomorrow how I went.

  23. I've only just read about your issues --- and will try to provide some more information soon. Yep, there is a check for Windows 98 second edition when the program is first run so I'm not sure how DeadDude managed to proceed. I'll check the code again ...
  24. just re-checked the link --- it works in both Firefox and Internet Advertising Companion (otherwise known as Internet Explorer) ... i'd prefer to only have the one working link at the moment ... i get to know how many people have downloaded the file .... 252 at last count ... can you please confirm that this behaviour exists for at least 2 of the browsers you have installed on your system (you have at least 2 don't you?) ... the other alternative is to wait for the v1.8 release ... coming soon ...
