  1. It's difficult to put peer-to-peer in a poll because there are networks and programs. Some people are argumenting about speed but the speed depends on the upload of others.
Torrents work very well and for me the best program is µTorrent. There is no reason anymore to choose for a big program like Azureus or BitComet. Some programs have build-in torrent support, like Shareaza and Opera, but it's less good I think.
For other networks it's more complicate. For Gnutella; FrostWire, Cabos or something else? (LimeWire and BearShare are not the best choices)
Wich other networks have a lot of good stuff?
  2. Kaspersky offers the best protection, NOD32 uses the less recources and AntiVir is the best free one. Symantec Norton is really a resource-eater, it was preinstallen on my PC but not for long. I have Kaspersky installed now but most of the time it's not loaded. It bothers me to much with tasks and I almost never get virusses. Like someone already said: Windows XP SP2 is secure enough, I'm behind a router and e-mails are always scanned before they reach your PC.

  3. I can live without the + next to the cursor but indeed the red X when deleting files and the recycle bin when placing files to the recycle bin are squeezed horizontally and therefore not smooth anymore. It is on my Dutch installation but not on another English XP system. Maybe it depends of system fonts or changed values in the advanced appearence tab. Now you mention it it was always ike that, also with older versions of XPize.

  4. To replace the icons you copy WINDOWS\XPize\Tools\ResHacker.exe, WINDOWS\System32\batmeter.dll, 300.bmp and 301.bmp into a folder of your choice. Open batmeter with reshacker, look for the bitmaps, click replace and choose the custom bitmaps, save the changes, replace the original in system32 with the new one. Restart explorer.exe to view the changes.

It is not batt.dll but batmeter.dll, even then it won't work I think. I've tried it that way to replace the timezone bitmap but the relaoder does not check for changed resources.

  5. Sorry, I misread something in your first post I geuss.

Recompiling wont do anything good IMO. On my system (laptop with ATI graphics and AMD cpu) videos don't work good either with Windows Media Player. I don't think it has something to do with Media Center. Or don't you have the same problem with WMP? If it was an ATI card it could be something with the drivers. Maybe you have bad codecs or something. I don't know much about codecs and nVidia. But he rendering engine of Media Center is Media Player and a GeForce4 should be enough.

  6. You don't need a new graphics card. Media Center will work fine with 32MB. The only reason you get this message is that Media Center checks whether your card supports DirectX 9 and appearently it does not. Therefore you need to add 2 registry keys to disable the check for DirectX. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Display Settings DWORD DisableDx9CapsCheck and DisableDxCheck both with value 1. Now Media Center won't start in safe mode anymore. Are 36.48 the latest drivers supporting your card?

This has already been asked and answered a couple of times on this forum.

  7. XP MCE 2002 has WMP 9 and version 2005 should have WMP 10 included. Have a look at the about screen of Media Center, there you can see wether it is version 2002 or 2005. System properties can say 2002 even when you have 2005.

It is very weird that Tigerdirect gave you 3 discs. So you have: disk 1: XP Pro SP2, disk 2: MCE 2002, disk 3: MCE update 2002->2005? Normally it is disk 1: XP Pro SP2 and disk 2: MCE 2005. Thank you for the info, now we know Tigerdirect sucks.

The second disk of version 2005 also contains .NET Framework 1.1 but I don't know if it's also the case for version 2002. You will have to make sure .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 are installed. Not only for Media Center, also for other software.

  8. You can uninstall the bootscreen. Just run the XPize uninstaller and select the bootscreen. If you don't want it then you can uncheck it while installing.

Every version of Windows XP SP2 has the same bootscreen and that bitmap is still on your PC, but I don't know where.

  9. XPize modifies each file. Replacing is not possible because these files could be different depending on the language, edition, service pack level, updates and the package would be huge. Just have a look in the folder WINDOWS\XPize\Recources\ You can find all the icons and things it replaces.

  10. It is an update for the Media Center Update Rollup 2. After you installed the big update, there is another small update fix available. I don't know the KB number. But I don't know if it has something to do with it. I geuss it was just me who did something wrong or messed to much in the ehome folder.

  11. Could it be that the downlaod-dialog of Windows Media Player still needs to be XPized. I don't really mind because I never download something with WMP, but it is similar to the one in Internet Explorer.

  12. XPize does not make icons. If they are not on your desktop, you can put them there. Everyones desktop looks different. Drive-icons are not changed because they already look nice. Only some filetype icons are changed. If you still have old-looking icons you should post a screenshot.

  13. IMO 21 is the best size for caption buttons and titlebars. It has to be an odd number otherwise the cross is not in the middle of the close-button. Lower than 21 makes the icons smaller and less nice. It does not depend of the system but of the visual style. If you you change the taskbar size, icons will not look nicer right away, you might have to reboot or relogon. Iconsize must be a multiple of 16 to look nice.

  14. Both are possible. You can just add the Media Center application by copying some files and registry keys from an XP Media Center Edition to your XP Professional. Than it just stays XP Pro, without changing the windows serial code, and with keeping the ability to join a domain. You can find some topics on that on this forum.

You can also install the components from the 2nd CD. I don't know exactly what happens then but you can read about that in the *Ultimate Edition* topic here.

You could also perform an upgrade. That is what I did. First you have to identify your PC as a Media Center PC, some registry key that is. You need a new serial code for that. Windows update will work for MCE then. All settings will be kept and all programs will still work. You don't need other drivers or something, that's all the same. You will loose the ability to join a domain, but there seems to be a work-around if you need it. All the information is somewhere on this forum.
