Mimo, I prefer tommyp's method for it's simplicity. I tried, but cannot make mimo's way work - for it I would need some additional instructions as I have not been able to Extract the .dll from the .exe Thanks, Lilla

Mimo, thanks for reply. So far I'm not aware of any problems with her computer. But I'm concerned because as they say "I don't know what I don't know". She is a average sort of user and most likely would not recognize subtle problems. Opinions on this would be most welcome: Is it OK to run a regular computer (not a VM) with this update slipstreamed?

Mimo, regarding... 2009-10 Enable RemoteApp to XP SP3 VMs on a Windows 7 host Optional KB961742 KB961742-v3.exe HF Hummm... Seeing the above in your +Ignore list caused me to go back and read the related article again. Given my limited understanding of VM, I do not fully understand the article. However, after reading it more closely I now realize that I should not have included it in my build (as I was doing until reading your post), instead I should have added it in my +Ignore list (something I did only after reading your post). Perhaps a hint could be added to help others avoid making the mistake I made. SUGGESTION, add a hint such as the one below (or other words of your choosing): Include only if you are installing Win XP SP3 on a Virtual Machine running on a computer running Windows Vista. Read article for details. PROBLEM. Unfortunately, I used a HFSLIP build where I had included it when I did a fresh install of Windows XP Pro on my sister's computer after her power supply went bad. While her machine seems to work OK so far, I would like to undo the file changes made by this update ASAP. The article includes a list of files included in the update. Can I simply replace these files with ones from a computer installed without this update? Or, do I need to unregister the old and re-register the new dlls? Did the update delete any files that I need to add back? Is there anything else I need to consider in reversing this update? Thanks for any advice on this, Lilla

tommyp, I did a fresh install followed by getting the .NET Framework and other updates from Micrsoft updates. I then installed all of the programs I use. All is working well. Then today I decided to test doing a "repair install" on a fresh install (not the complete install mentioned above). PROBLEM: Some things don't work after the repair install, as explained below. Installed from my HFSLIP CD... Source: Windows XP Pro using MSDN CD (Gold); I change PID in setupp.ini to accept OEM Product Key. Integrated SP3, IE8, WMP11, RDC7, WUA3, and most other updates. I integrated one driver (LAN). I used the DefragSYSOC utility. slipstreamed using HFSLIP 1.7.10 Beta H checked using HFSLIPFC-100301 I did not use HFCLEANUP or nLite. Simple Repair Install Test. First I did a fresh install (I did not enable auto updates) for Win XP Pro, when it was done I did a repair install. Initially all looked to be OK, I could open WMP11, notepad, etc. I could access files on my main computer via the LAN. The first problem came when I tried to go online using IE8. I got this error message. Windows Internet Explorer Internet Explorer cannot download from www.msn.com (my homepage). Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later. If I tried to access google.com or hfslip.org or any other site I got the same message as above with only the site name changed. Next I installed CCleaner. When I tried to run it I got this error message... RunDll32.exe - Entry Point Not found. The procedure entry point DeleteWpadCacheForNetworks could not be located in the dynamic link library WINNET.dll At this point I decided to stop and post here. I would like to know if others have tested a repair install, and if so does it work for them or not. Thank you, Lilla HFSLIP.zip

Hi Lilla, thx for this idea. I've thought about it and I come to the conclusion to leave it as it is, because I want to recommend the latest beta. If I add links on th top of the page, a user will probably use the final instead of the latest beta (betas often have the touch of 'unstable'). But I've modified the line with the download-links for HFSLIP in table 6. Until now the final was more in the foreground than the current beta (which is to prefer). I changed it now in that way, that the latest beta stands more in the foreground. What do you think? I like it! I like that you give a recommendation as this will help people! Lilla

Mimo, Suggestion to make your list a bit more intutitive to use, especially for new users... now... Good work! It solved the problem. It worked and it was so easy. All I had to do was to put Defrag2Sysoc.exe and HFSLIP_POST_Defrag2Sysoc.cmd in \TOOLS folder, and run HFSLIP (1.7.10 beta g) As I understand it, the above would only happen if I used the /check switch, which I didn't do. I of course had already confirmed that I met the requirements (2 components sections; section names and order matching that given in first quote in this post). I did not edit anything. It didn't ask me anything, nothing opened up, no error message. All appears to have worked perfectly! I used the name HFSLIP_POST_Defrag2Sysoc.cmd (with the 2 in it for consistency with the name of the .exe).FYI. Well, I slipstreamed 3 drivers. Two worked, one didn't. The video driver I slipstreamed didn't install; instead Windows installed the older video driver bundled with Windows XP. Perhaps it didn't install because the driver (obtained by DriverMax) was a bit odd as it had a sub-folder (whereas, the other two drivers did not). Should I have moved the contents of the sub-folder up to the root folder, and then deleted the sub-folder? Also, there were two .xml files, one in the root and one in the subfolder. I deleted the one in the root folder (where the .inf was located), and left the one in the subfolder. Should I have deleted both .xml files? In any event, I am happy to have two drivers (LAN and Sound) integrated. Thank you, Lilla

Geej, When I run HFSLIP I get the error message shown in the attachment. This is consistent with what I have been saying, that after running HFSLIP, the \SOURCE\SYSOC.IN_ file that I created (I combined the 2 components sections into 1) has been changed by HFSLIP to one with again 2 component sections. Thus, \SOURCESS\SYSOC.IN_ winds up having 3 components sections. I didn't see this message earlier because I wasn't watching the screen. Perhaps it would be better if this message didn't clear automatically. Since HFSLIP changes the \SOURCE\SYSOC.IN_ file on my system, I will have to give up on using DefragSysoc.exe, at least until/unless this can be resolved. Thank you for your help, Lilla

This is my first attempt at adding drivers, I have a question. My everyday and workbench computers both run Win XP Pro (OEM), but the video cards are different. Can I add both video drivers to the same build, or do I need to prepare a different build for each machine? Thanks, Lilla
-
Where would this error message appear? There is nothing in HFSLIP.LOG (see SYSOC.ZIP in my earlier post). As stated above, after running HFSLIP...cmd to prepare the .iso, the \SOURCESS\I386 folder does not contain the backup file created by defragsysoc.exe, so it doesn't appear that it runs. Due to the above, I did not create a CD and install from it. But, I will do so if you think this would provide any additional information to work with. Please advise. Done. I changed HFANSWER.INF to HFANSWER.INI - Thanks for letting me know. Thank you for trying to help figure out what is happening (or not happening) here. Lilla

The double quote should not be removed unless the file full path to DefragSysoc.exe does not contain space.Hope that helps, Kinds regards I know this is kind of hard to follow, but I did exactly as you instructed above and in your original post. The problem seems to be with hfslip-1.7.10_beta_G.cmd. When I run it, it changes the edited version of \SOURCE\SYSOC.IN_ (that contains .INF) I put there (before running HFSLIP) so that it AGAIN has two components sections. Is it perhaps a problem with beta G, is it changing \SOURCE\SYSOC.IN_ when it should be changing \SOURCESS\SYSOC.IN_ ? Have you tested using hfslip-1.7.10_beta_G.cmd? Lilla

Mimo, Observation: Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) doesn't flag cWnd.exe as a threat, as it does cmdow.exe. Thought: Since cmdow.exe is detected as a threat by some/most? anti-virus programs, would it be better to use cWnd.exe instead of cmdow.exe in table 6 of the update-list (read more about cWnd.exe here)? Possible programming criteria for hfslipfc... Lilla

Environment: Base is Windows XP Pro Gold (aka Service Pack 0). Integrating SP3, IE8, WMP11, RDC7, and most other updates. Did not use HFCleanup or nLite. Having experienced the problem described in your article, I decided to try using DefragSysoc. However, apparently it did not run as after running HFSLIP the backup file created by DefragSysoc (SOURCESS\I386\SYSOCBAK.IN_) does not exist. I created HFSLIP_POST_DefragSysoc.cmd (contains only the line below) "%~dp0DefragSysoc.exe" I left the double-quotes in place as shown in the example in the article linked to below, please advise if they should be removed. I placed DefragSysoc.exe and the above .cmd file in the HFTOOLS folder Then I ran hfslip-1.7.10_beta_G.cmd. Should this utility work with this beta? Your article says that DefragSysoc.exe does some error checking. Perhaps it doesn't like something. I followed your instructions. In case it might be helpful, I've attached some files for you to look at. Any clues you might offer would be appreciated. Thank you, Lilla Sysoc.zip

Hmm... I've just downloaded the file and i got no probs. Maybe the webserver had temp problems. Can you try again?Tried again and it's working fine this morning. Must have been that the webserver had temp problems. Thanks. Observation, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) identifies cmdow.exe as a threat and recommends removal.SUGGESTION: Include HFTOOLS in the default FOLDERSET defined in HFSLIPFC.ini. Then, in the event cmdow.exe was deleted by your anti-virus this would be caught by HFSLIPFC. Good idea! But I will do a "special-check" for this file instead of checking the whole HFTOOLS because then the file-checker will report too many unknown or missing files I think! Would this be possible: Check that HFTOOLS folder contains all the files listed in table 6. Also, add a new section called "! Additional tools in HFTOOLS folder" or whatever name you choose. In this section I would add HFANSWER.INI (contains settings to install RC), and any other files I have added to this folder that are not listed in table 6.

MimO, Thanks for incorporating my little suggestions. Regarding the 2010, Feb, 18 update. PROBLEM: I am not able to download the new version of HFSLIPFC (v.2010/02/18). Since I was able to download the previous version (v2010/02/12), I'm thinking maybe something isn't quite right on your side. When I click the link, the File Download (title) window comes up, when I click Save, the window closes. I am using Windows XP Pro with SP3, IE8. Observation, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) identifies cmdow.exe as a threat and recommends removal.SUGGESTION: Include HFTOOLS in the default FOLDER SET for HFSLIPFC.ini. Then, in the event cmdow.exe was deleted by your anti-virus this would be caught by HFSLIPFC. Thank you for your wonderful list and for your BRILLIANT file checker utility. Lilla

Tommyp, Successful report. I used 1.7.10 beta G to slipstream SP3, IE8, WMP11, RDC7, and most other updates into Windows XP Pro, Gold (aka, Service Pack 0) source. I used HFSLIPFC v2010/02/12 to prepare. This tool was VERY, VERY helpful. FYI, I didn't use the HFCleanup utility or nLite. After running HFSLIP I created a CD from the resulting .iso and used it to do a fresh install. All worked great, no problems at all. Later I used the CD to do a repair install, all worked great there too! (See followup note below.) I'm confused, can someone please tell me which .EXT file I should be comparing to? My XP source is SP0 (Gold), I'm intregrating SP3. Thank you so very much for all of your hard work, and for sharing it with us home users. Lilla 2010-03-02 Followup. While the repair install I did above "appeared" to work, it was a simple case where I did a fresh install with network cable unplugged, then immediately did a repair install. Since I could open WMP11, notepad, etc. I concluded the repair install worked. But, today I tried to repeat this, and after doing the repair install I find IE8 doesn't work and CCleaner (installed after repair install) gives error messages. See my new post for details. Mimo, It seems like we are missing the update discussed here MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 3 (Microsoft XML Core Services) Version: 1.0; Date Published: 9/29/2009; Description: MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) is a complete replacement of MSXML 4.0, MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2). MSXML 4.0 SP3 provides a number of security and reliability bug fixes. As best I can figure (my best effort but I'm not an expert at this), the above would affect the update-list as shown below... To mimo, re: Mimo’s Windows XP Service Pack 3 update-list re: Last Update Check: 2009, November, 26 Last List Update: 2009, November, 26 HFSLIP 1.7.9 (final) <line> 2007-03 User Profile Hive Cleanup Service 1.6d Optional n/a UPHClean-Setup.msi (necessary with SP3?) HFGUIRUNONCE (I don’t use it) Mimo, Yes, UPHClean is necessary with SP3! I install this on all Windows XP computers. Ms WinXP UPHClean Service 1.6d is part of Vista, it is not part of XP SP3 so you must install it yourself. Below are some notes on my experience using UPHClean... UPHClean is a Microsoft service to help with slow log off and unreconciled profile problems. Problem: getting Event Viewer > App Log > Errors 1517 & 1524. Shutdown is slow. This is happening on 770lilla, Mom's computer, and all others XP computers. Solution: I installed UPHClean v1.6d and it solved the problem. Errors 1517 & 1524 are gone. Shutdowns are faster. Observation: UPHClean (1420KB) runs as a process all of the time. I think it is worth it to eliminate this problem. Hope this helps, Lilla
