Hi, Can anyone suggest where I can get a comprehensive Step-By-Step tutorial on how to set up a Windows 2003 server to accept VPN connection, with good security. Also, I would like to know what changes, if any I would have to make to my router, and/or Watchguard X500 firewall. I need to know this ASAP. Thanx

hmmm.... I have'nt quite checked the eventlog on the local PC. However, I'm quite sure that the login script is NOT running at all. I've not applied it using GPOs. I'm using the user profiles. The path I have mentioned is the UNC path. It's stored the login script in the NETLOGON share on the 2003 server. It looks like... \\Server01\NETLOGON\LoginScript.vbs

I followed the instructions mentioned in this link, and the folder re-direction caused some serious chaos with the user profiles. I faced a similar problem. Here's what I did : Created a shared folder by the name of Profiles$. Gave everyone full Share-Level access to the Profiles$ folder For each user's profile I created a folder manually under Profiles$. On this folder I gave the pertaining user Modify access, and the Admin full-control. This works for me. However, is there any way of creating a profile folder automatically for each new user, and only assigning the pertaining user with rights to his own profile, and the administrator ? Please do lemme know. For the time-being I have to manually create a profile folder for each new user, with his loginname. Thanx

I would've done that. However, There are a few users in the group that have a different login script.

Hi, I have created a .vbs login script to map network shares to drives. I placed the login script (Loginscript.vbs) into the NETLOGON share on the 2003 Domain controller, and also added the following folder path to the Login Script section of the user profile : \\server\Netlogon\LoginScript.vbs. However, when the user's login the script does not run at all. I know this cause the script displays a message box, and maps the drives. When the user logs in, none of this happens. However, when I double-click on the script (LoginScript.vbs), it works fine. Also, is ther any way to map several shared folder from different volumes, to one drive, with or without using script? Please I need an answer to first question, ASAP. Thanx

I dunno of any routers that provide DNS, you can use Static IPs in a small network. However, I know of certain firewalls that are capable of assigning IPs, and providing DNS, eg. Watchguard X500.

****, this is my first real-life installation of the Win2003 server, and it's been plagued with all sorts of problem.... This time is it's a windows 2003 shutdown problem... Today, was the first day I tried to shut down the server, after installing it 2 dayz ago. When i shutdown, it gave me the usual message saying .... "Windows Shutting down" with a grey screen in the backgroud, then the message went away, and all that remained was the grey screen, with the mouse pointer. The screen remains on for around 10-12 mins, after which the sever shuts down. It should not take 10-12 mins for the server to shut down. When I start the server, Windows2003 boots up normally. Checked the eventvwer, but saw no suspisicous error or notification. Another problem is, that when the server is working, certain services like the PRINTER SPOOLER, and the HELPER SERVICE shutdown automatically. The startup type is Automatic, but these services shut-down atleast twice a day, and then I have to restart them manually, and set them back to Automatic. Today, even the DHCP SERVER service shutdown abruptly. Why does this happen ? Please I need to know the above ASAP... thnx

Thnx guyz ... Issue resolved. I had denied the users the right to install printer drivers. However, what baffles me is that I had set the right for the OU, yet some of the users could install and work with the printers ??

Yes, I have check and double-checked .... alll users have been granted permissions to access the printer.

Hi, I've just setup a network with Windows2003 Server, and 15 WinXP clients. The server setup is quite simple. Just one server, that fucntions as a DC, DHCP, DNS, File/Print server. The Active directory structure too is quite simple. Just one main OU, and 2 sub OUs .... one for computer accounts, and the other for user accounts. However, the 2 sub OUs are simply for classifcation purpose only. I have'nt actually assigned individual GPOs for the user, and computer OUs. Two GPOs are assigned ... one on the main OU, and on the Domain Controller OU. Now, I have setup a HP 1460PCL Laser network printer, and installed it on the server as a share. The problem is that most users can install the printer from the server, and print, but a few user get an access denied when they try installing the shared printer from the server to their PCs. I wonder why some of the users are facing this problem. All the users and computers have identical rights. Any idea(s) ? thnx!!

Is it advisable to install the Windows2003 SP1 ? Also, I want to know of a way to prevent a user from chaging the desktop wallpaper, by opening an image in the Windows XP 'Windows Fax and Picture viewer', and selecting the option to set the image as the wallpaper. Please, I need to know this ASAP. Thnx!!!

Well, you could deny the users access to the 'Run' option. Will that do ?

Few questions about first-time Win2k3 installation
Hamins replied to Hamins's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Hi everyone, thnx wullieb1, and everyone else for your suggestions. My setup is quite simple, due to the requirments, and budget constraints. I have just one server to my disposal. It's a HP ML150 G2, with Xeon 3.0Ghz, 1GB DDR-RAM, 73GB SCSI HDD. As I mentioned in the fist post, it will be a multi-roled server. It will serve as a DC, a DNS server, DHCP server, and file & print server. Right now, there are only 15 PCs + one printer on the network. I will be re-installing the server tomorrow. I have a 73GB HDD. I want to make 2 partitions. The primary partitions will hold the OS, programs, and system files, and the other partition for all the user-date, profiles and emails. Will 15GB be enough for the primary partition ? I have downloaded the Ms Security guide. It'll be quite helpful for security settings. I have just one question. The heirachy in my company is pretty flat. No departments, and all users (except the designated admin), will have the same user-rights. So, I want to know at what level I should set the security at ... should it be Domain, OU, or group ? ..... I mean, what would b most advisable ? Please lemme know .... thnx -
Few questions about first-time Win2k3 installation

thnx Klasika, further suggestion, anyone else ? -
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to Windows 2003. I have been assigned the task of setting up a network of around 25 comps + 2003 server. I have finished installing Win2003 on the server. I want to know if there is any checklist to follow before promoting the sever to a Domain Controller. Also, I would like to know how to harden the Win2003. Should it be done before, or after I promote it to a Domain Controller. The server will be the only one in the domain, and will be multi-roled. It'll be the Domain Controller, and will be used for user-management, file/print sharing, DNS, DHCP. There will be no database running on the server. All the data will be will reside on this server, and will mostly be ms-office files, and emails. However, the data is very confidential. I would like to know at what level I should set the security ... ie. should it be at the Domain Level, OU Level, or group level ? I would like to apply tight security restrictions on the network. I would also like to know what type of security is to be applied for the Domain Controller itself. Is it advisable to use any of the pre-defined security templates? If yes, which ones should I use for member computers, users, and the domain controller itself ? I need to know the above ASAP. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thnx

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer (Such as Dell). I'm not too sure if slipstreaming works with OEM version of WinXP

Hi everyone, This is my first post over here. What I would like to do is manually slipstream WinXP SP2, Hot-fixes, Critical updates etc etc. I have already installed all the critical updates on the PCs, via Automatic Update. They were downloaded and installed automatically via the update service. I dont know where the automatic update has downloaded them on the PC. So now when I run the Automatic update, or the Catalogue, it does not show or let me download the critical updates already installed on the PCs. I know how to slipstream, just the XP Service Packs, but not the other critical updates or hotfixes. I would like to know how to slipstream those too. Also, I would like to simply download the critical updates/hot-fixes alerady installed on my PC. Unfortunately, I cannot use nLite, as the IT policy at company where I am the Sys-Admin, does not permit downloading of software from the internet. I hope you'll have understood what I want. I need some help with the above. Thnx!!!
