  1. When I was staying at this hotel, I plugged my laptop (which is a member of my company's AD domain) into the available network cable and instantly all the required internet settings for the hotel's network is applied i.e. proxy, etc. It updated the homepage and even removed the existing proxy server that was already set for my company's network and replace it with their own proxy. Of course when I disconnected, all the settings where back to normal. How is this possible? I understand that, through google, there is solution that uses .pac files to do the configuration but there has to be a way to distribute the .pac files to the PC that connects to the network. I am not sure if this is what the hotel used coz all I did was plug the network cable into my PC and I got their settings right away. Does anyone know how this is done? many thanks.
  2. To answer my own question: I increased the amount of RAM on the PC and it worked. For some reason if it is 256MB and below, booting through PXE using the wim boot image (Lite Touch) does not work.
  3. I'm new to BDD2007 and WDS. I followed the steps on the documentation to used BDD2007 to install WindowsXP Sp2. I followed the steps to add the OS, add the Build and add the Deployment Point. Then clicked Update to create the Lite Touch boot image WIM file. I then added the boot image file to WDS to allow PXE boot from a test PC. Test PC then boots into PE environment but sits on the command prompt. X:\Windows\System32>wpeinit Nothing happens then after a while X:\Windows\System32> I am expecting to see the Welcome to Windows Deployment screen where it will ask me for the keyboard layout, user credentials, etc.. as stated in the procedure but nothing happens. The pc received an ip address from the DHCP server and is able to ping the WDS server. What did I miss? Thanks!
  4. that was all I needed to hear... Thanks a lot mate!
  5. greetings... I would like to know if there is a way to make users see only the folders that they are supposed to see in Windows 2003. Example: \Folder1 |--\Sub-Folder1 |--\Sub-Folder2 Just to explain, in Novell, if users are granted access to Sub-Folder1, users will only see that folder in Windows Explorer and they won't even know that Sub-Folder2 exist. In Windows 2003, say Folder1 is mapped as drive X:, users see both Sub-Folder1 and Sub-Folder2. They see Sub-Folder2 eventhough they don't have access to it, of course when they double-click that folder, they get an "Access Denied" error. Is there a tool or a setting somewhere where we could prevent users from seeing the folders that they don't have access to in Windows 2003? When they mapped drive X (Folder1) they should only see Sub-Folder1 and not Sub-Folder2. Thank you in advance.
  6. can we use this vista PE version to do unattended install of WindowsXP?
  7. just out of curiosity, what does the command under the runonce key like the "rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection nlite.inf,C" actually do? can't wait for the next version...thanks.
  8. Here's a portion of my runonceex file which you might be able to use for your batch file: REG ADD %KEY%\001 /VE /D "Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.05" /f REG ADD %KEY%\001 /V 1 /D "%CDROM%:\APPS\ADBRDR7\ADBRDR7.msi /qn EULA_ACCEPT=YES" /f REG ADD %KEY%\001 /V 2 /D "msiexec /p %CDROM%:\APPS\ADBRDR7\Upd705.msp /qn REINSTALLMODE=omus REINSTALL=ALL" /f REG ADD %KEY%\001 /V 3 /D "REGEDIT /S %CDROM%:\APPS\ADBRDR7\AcRdr7.reg" /f first line runs the msi file for installing acrobat reader 7. you can use msiexec as nitro322 suggested to run it. 2nd line installs the update to 7.0.5 (I didn't want to download the full one so I just downloaded the update) last line is just for applying the registry tweaks i wanted
  9. IcemanND, would you be so kind to share the scripts? it might be suitable for our environment as well. thanks.
  10. For 55 PCs only, I'd just use Ghost. An imaged copy of your SOE will be good enough to install to most of your workstations. For some with unusual/special drivers, it will prompt you when the OS starts anyway so just manually install the drivers, otherwise add them to your image. For all other PCs where your ghost image doesn't work, I'd just install manually.
  11. Crahak, What's your process like in updating MS patches on your ghosted images? Is there such a thing as slipstreaming the patches to a ghost image like what you do when you have a distribution point for unattended installs?
  12. Hi, i'm not sure if i understood the question. but why not just install Windows on a model computer then make a ghost image of that system, then use this sysprep-ed image to deploy to other workstations?
  13. Hi, Can anyone recommend any free patch management tool (we are currently using WSUS but one problem is that most of our users are restricted (no Admin rights) so they can't install the patches on their workstation after being pushed from WSUS) -OR- Can anyone post/share their own patch deployment processes? Thanks!
  14. Hi All, Is there a way to synchronize the outlook email/calendar with a PDA when the outlook email is running under a thin client environment i.e., Terminal Service? thanks
  15. this one worked for me... once you've set the standard wallpaper on the desktop, add the ff value to this key in registry: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\ Wallpaper (string) value="<path to wallpaper>" WallpaperStyle (string) value = "2" (2 means stretched) after applying that, our users are unable to change wallpaper even if they click "Set as Desktop Background" option when they do a right click on IE or from image preview.
  16. BTW, how can you add the WinXp setup files onto a CD with WinPE? Will copying the contents of the WinPE cd onto another CD with the WinXP setup files make it bootable still?
  17. Thanks for the advise. And for the zip file, I'll check it out and see if I could apply it on our install. I guess this is the info I needed to get me started with PE.
  18. Hi, Can anyone help me step through installing Windows XP (using either WinPE or BartPE) from a single CD/DVD? What I mean is, the WinPE and WindowsXP sources file used for the unattended install are on the same CD instead of having PE to map a network share. This will be useful for our remote users who need to do an unattended reinstall of their OS without connecting to the network during the install process. What we currently have are CDs that boot from DOS and asks the user for some info (for our use with customizing the OS) and then run the WinXP setup (on the same CD) from there. I'm new to PE and was wondering if this is possible with PE and can someone give some instructions on how to do this? I don't know where to start, I'm pretty sure you got the answers for me... Thanks.
  19. hmmm nice. probably what I'm looking for. I'll check it out and see if it works for us. Thanks...
  20. Hello, Can anyone provide me a script to change the computername? my setup is: after the unattended install, we run a script to localize the PC settings according to the user's location and install the appropriate apps. The first step would be to change the computername to the standard naming convention used depending on the user's location. The unattended setup is set to initially assign a random computername on winnt.sif. After windows installation is complete and during the first logon, I need a script to run and prompt the user for location and based from this change the computername. The reason why we are doing this is so we can distribute unattended cds to remote users and all they have to do is plug the cd in. As soon as setup is finished, the user logs in and prompted for their office location. That's the only prompt we want to ask the user, the rest done automatically. Thanks...
  21. look here: http://home.planet.nl/~piepl010/div2.htm
  22. okay, he won't show me the vbs script he made to automate the process on the first logon but this is how he did it: 1. Use the getsid.exe reskit tool to get the SID of the user account on the PC 2. Once SID is known for user account, look for the entry in the registry: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ <SID> 3. Edit the ProfileImagePath value to point to you existing profiles folder e.g. D:\Documents and Settings\<existing usename> 4. Just make sure to assign the corresponding access rights to that folder as well... if you can come up with a script to automate it that we be great
  23. I've seen someone do it, they used getsid.exe to get the SID of the existing profile folders and associated it with the SID of the user. They used a VBscript to do it and run it on the first startup. I've seen it work on their SOE but I don't have the copy of the script to do it or how it works. If you find one, please share.
