Have you tried Sun's Virtualbox? I have been running several instances of Server 2008, "Vail New Home Server", and a couple of versions of W7 with no problems. I was running VMWare for awhile but had a few problems with it and then tried Virtualbox and have had no problems with it so far (1 Year). It was easy to setup and fully configurable for 32 or 64 bit OS's.

Have you looked into Windows Home Server? After looking at the specs and also knowing a few people that have it I would suggest it to you. It has everything you want in allowing people to connect to your network in a secure way.

My understanding from our university was that you could use it on 2 computers only. So I purchased the Professional version of W7 through BSU and have had no problems activating on Laptop and Desktop.

The DirectX for Feb 2010 has 143 different cab files that have Directx9 thru 11 plus all the different supporting files. I have mine packaged up as a silent install (directxV21010.exe) using WinRaR sfx after breaking it out of the download. And yes if you use the code that johnhc provided from Kurt_Aust that should work. The only reason I'm breaking my download out is trying to make it smaller by removing the un-needed files. Have not really been able to test on "7" as I keep getting errors when I hit the commit button.

These errors above are caused when you have WAIK for VISTA or VLITE installed. Its also why services disappear.
dridzz @03GrandAmGT I said WAIK for VISTA@dridzz I do not have WAIK for vista installed. The way you wrote the above message is that I have WAIK for Vista installed which I do not. I have WAIK for Windows 7 installed and also do not have VLite installed on this particular desktop running Windows 7 (OEM).

Not in my situation. I have been using WAIK for Windows 7 "File name KB3AIK_EN.iso Windows system manager 6.1.7600"
I have tried adding more ram 4Gigs and still get the same error. Again like I stated in my previous post that when the program does error it is very sporadic and does not give any clues until you hit the commit button.

I have been getting the same error as gendouhydeist off and on. It's very unpredictable when using the program which is very frustrating as this program appears to have everything to make a unattended install. Attached is the error picture and error message in txt form. I believe once this program gets all the bugs worked out of it it will definitely excel in the modifying the os world.

Had the same problem on my HTPC, driver update took care of it. I have seen similar complaints both yea and nay on driver update, so YMMV.

So make this a command file with a name and call it from autounattend.xml? Will try this weekend and see what happens. Now I just need to find away to call the setup from the file server to the desktop any ideas? Everything I have tried so far has failed. I get a response of a wrong version OS, may have to build a special PE disk.

Hey everyone,
I’m attempting to start the builds for my home network and have a few questions regarding the various flavors of Win 7. What I have is the following.1. Win 7 Professional 1 ea.
2. Win 7 Home Premium (Family Pack) 3 ea. (3 separate packs.)
3. Win 7 Home Premium (HP Upgrade) Laptop 1 ea. (This is actually a FULL version) Installs fine with Bare Metal install.
What I’m trying to achieve is to be able to use the valid licenses that I have with just 1 image, as Win 7 has all the images on the DVD and just depends on which key is used. Just don’t want any problems when they activate. I might also add here that 3 of the desktops are 64Bit and the other 6 are 32 Bit, plus 1 Laptop which is 64Bit from HP with Vista.
Also what do I need to do in order to install over the network as I did with XP using Bart’s PE or other PE environments? And, can I rename the Autounattend to the computers name, so that the correct image can be installed.
Example:

FORMAT c: /fs:ntfs /Q /V:System /Y

Thanks jaclaz. Didn't realize it was that old of a subject, as I just got the email last night I do remember the (Bricking) issue as I had just bought several 500 gig drives of that series, and was watching the forums intensely as I was moving everything over to our family storage system onto them. Sure I had backups of approx. 4 TB worth of DL DVD's. I started buying the Seagate's as I had been a Maxtor buyer for a long time (Amiga 1000) (SCSI)and still have the drive and system that still works today.

Has anyone else that bought Seagate drives get an email regarding a Class action suit against Seagate. The letter I received is below, I know that there has been some talk going on regarding the drives going dead after awhile, but this seems to be an issue regarding size of drive.

The settlement was previously approved, but the court has required additional notice to members of the settlement class to clarify the class definition. There's more to the letter but I'll post the link. Seems a bit odd for bringing a class action suit for only a 7% increase of the overall drive size. Could this be just one of those scams to get the lawyers pockets rich.
If you purchased a Seagate brand hard disc drive between March 22, 2001 and September 26, 2007, a proposed class action settlement may affect you. Another hearing has been scheduled in San Francisco Superior Court to determine whether the settlement should be approved. Under the settlement, you may have the right to make a claim for cash or software. If you previously made a claim, you need not take any further action unless you wish to make claims on additional hard drives. Your prior claim or claims will be processed after the settlement is approved. You may not make a new claim for any hard drive included in a prior claim. You also may choose to exclude yourself from the settlement. If you previously excluded yourself, you will remain excluded, unless you revoke your exclusion. The lawsuit is Cho v. Seagate Technology (US) Holdings, Inc., San Francisco Superior Court, Case No. 453195. In the suit, the plaintiff alleges that in the sale and marketing of hard disc drives, Seagate stated that purchasers of the drives would receive approximately 7% more usable storage capacity than they actually received. Seagate has denied and continues to deny each and all of plaintiff's claims, and denies that anyone has been harmed or deserves compensation. The Court has not made a decision on the merits.

I think English language is the most widely used in Business practice in the world. In my great adventures with Uncle Sam I had to learn a couple of languages so that it would be easier for me to communicate with the people of that country and make friends within the country side folk. The hardest language for me to learn was Korean but that's me. German was an easy one, and so was Spanish. If I really voiced the true Business language it would probably get me banned.

Well I know unless my systems had a boot-able hard drive or the game the floppy was on had (I forget) 1 or 2 OS (V1.3 & 2.0) files all you would get was the boot bios screen showing the animation of inserting a disk. You still need to have some way of booting from the Kickstart window. The term I should have used earlier was the game floppy needed to have been formatted with the install command, which put a Boot Block on the floppy. Essentially the same as the dos command of sys c: or a:

Yes you need a bootable disk. Even though you have the Kickstart (Bios) the actual OS is still needed. If you look around the net you can usually find a good buy on the OS and ROM chips. I realize this doesn't help now but there really is no other way. I still have My original C=64, A1000, A2000, A500 and they still work and get used. Once you find yourself the disks you need there was a way of copying the needed required OS files and putting them on the game disk if there was room. There are a few Amiga groups over at the Yahoo area.

Hi All,
I have a possessed system in which when I click on items to open the system hangs and won’t recover. I ran nirsoft’s ShellMenuView as I read that sometimes the context menu may have act this way. No luck with this everything came out clean. So thought might do a clean install and see where that would go. LOL still the same D*amn thing. OK, so let’s start looking at the system readings with Everest (Home) first thing I looked at were voltages. At first the machine locked up 3 times before I could get to the voltages, here they are.
Everest (Home)
12V = 6.22V WOW
5V = 5.12V
3.3V = 3.3V
Bios
3.3V = 3.31V
12V = 12.11V
5V = 5.11V
DVM
12V = 12.12-12.13
5V = 5.12V
3.3V = 3.3V
As you can see there is a big discrepancy with the 12V side between Bios, DVM and Everest and I am not too worried about that as the DVM would be more accurate than anything else. So just for giggles I swapped out the Power Supply with a new power supply that is a spare backup with the same results. So here is what I have done in process and elimination.
Mobo = No (Have no other that is similar)
CPU = Not Yet This should either work or not work
Power Supply = Yes
Hard Drive Yes (Swapped primary for Sata & IDE both)
Ram = Yes (Swapped stick by stick and both as pairs Corsair XMS & )& a completely different set.
Video Card = Yes This could be the problem (see below).
The video card works with no problem with all of my live cd’s I have and in XP safe mode. Once booted into the full system is when I have the problem. Now if I just built this system then I would suspect a driver issue. But this system has been running 24/7 since 2008 and has absolutely given me no problems. I tried getting Win7 on it. It installed to the part of testing video system and would lock up. So at this point I am highly suspecting the video card, which with this type of issue I have never seen (Clicking and getting system locked).

Well this system has been working fine so far for the last week with a different video card. I have been editing and re-compressing video files with no problems so this whole thing must have been a flaky video card. Although if there is anything that someone could comment, tips, voltage point, to check (Vid Card/Mobo).

Hi, was curious if anyone here has tried and what results they had with this GELID GC-Extreme Thermal Paste. Getting ready to do some cpu swapping and if this product is better than AS5 then I’ll try it myself. Have looked around at the reviews of this stuff and it really seems to be a “HOT” product (no pun intended). Been a long time user of AS5 and again, just wondering if this product is any better. Read many comments about the stuff and all have favorable content.

Not sure if any of these will help but here's a link with many different programs for Cloning, Backing up the hard drive. I have not used any of these as I use Ghost and have not had any problems with it.

So why trust anything including the great site of MSFN.
As cdob mentioned this could have been a serious file or registry corruption and by just instantly shutting your system down as you described you have more then likely fubared the whole thing where a system re-install will probably be needed.JD

Don't let the stinkin inanimate object get the best of you. That da@mn little murphy's law rides on my shoulders too. Try this last session I use this on all my 32 bit machines for the last couple of years and have had no issues during or after the install crop up. My 64 bit desktops run a similar one like this also with no issues. Before you use this Last Session go thru it as I have commented out monitor settings and such using a semicolon ( ; ). I worked on my nlite stuff for awhile just testing and getting things set to accommodate a wide range as I wanted to make sure it was a standardized setup for all my home stuff. This has again proven to be a very stable Last Session and everyone in the family is happy due to the standardization of it. I have done CD, DVD, HD, and network installs with this and nothing has ever went wrong. Don't forget to change this in BOLD.

This is very easy. Download MS MBSA (Microsoft Baseline Security) install it and click on the icon. This will download ALL the LATEST updates for both office and windows both, and compare that to what is on the machine at the current time. It will also allow you to download any updates that you might need. When this runs on your system it will build a report of what updates are on your system with the KB# and all other info related to that KB#. The current version goes back to W2K OS and Office XP. If you look around you will be able to find a version that will allow you to inspect back to Office 2K.
