  1. A few things to check:

Get a freeware proggie to check what's in your startup (like startupmanager or similar proggies...or even msinfo/msinfo32...)...but see if something is odd in your startup proggies.

There should have been no reason to start the pc in safe mode to remove spyware...use programs like Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware and similar - no need to go to safe mode - why did you??

Can you restart 98SE in DOS mode? If so, then do a scanreg /restore and restore a data set dated before you started having the problem...that should work (unless a proggie imbedded itself in startup).

A while ago, I had a similar problem, where on SHUTDOWN, the pc would still resart itself...but I had a problem with BIOS recognizing a larger hard drive...did you happen to replace a hard drive at the same time?

Then there is a power mode troubleshooter by M$...hard to find but if you google for PC restarts on powerdown or simialr, you will find it...

  2. You could of course use a proper browser like firefox

Don't understand this nit comment...Firefox has it's own troubles and why tell a newbie to use it if he/she doesn't even understand temp internet files?

It also has nothing todo with his questions regarding deleting files, etc..

  3. For items in a recycle bin, use Windows Explorer, go to recycle bin and right click the items and select restore. That will place the files back where they are.

But I find it odd you could delete the index.dat file. Normally that file can not be deleted unless it is forced, normally through a program that will delete it in a dos mode, reboot your pc, etc...

but if they are all temporary files, it won't matter....don't worry about them...they are JUST temporary internet files...so if you browse to a site again that uses the files, you will have new files/directories in the temp internet folders...

I clean my internet files all the time - it's agood thing!

    2. you should be able to kill any ie4 folders (caveat - I am not responsible for the state of your pc at any time!).

    3. Resources drop/increase based on many variables but it is perfectly normal for the values you note...my pc at work drops into the teens on occasion...if you open proggies and never close them but keep opening proggies, then yes, you may get too low on resources....but otherwise don't worry.

If you found this site as a resource, do the same for 98SE resources by doing a google...you will find tons of info on resource usage, how to help improve it, understand it, etc..

  4. first, you should have checked placed like ebay for a 98SE full install version - probably a lot cheaper than that dribble you purchased for 30 bucks!

There are some freeware programs that can copy bad disks/cd's, etc...I'll see if I can't find one or 2 to post here for ya.

Here's a few on this page by Roadkil...try unstoppable copier

  5. I just had to redo my computer because the Revolutions Pack made all sorts of programs no longer work right. Grrr! It came at a time when I could ill afford to do a fresh install of win98se.

I think you might want to rethink incorporating the things from the Revolutions Pack into the next SP.

    ivman

Did you let Tihiy know? I didn't see a recent post in that topic section....and if you can post, please note what programs and what is wrong..

  6. yup, I had just checked it and saw that shift thing...

BUT, the productivity then is going backwards, not a good thing!

Currently in my 98 shutdown screen, I just click restart to dos.

Now I have to press a shift key then click....

Was this taken from another OS or written by Tihiy? If you wrote it, Tihiy, could you have all options on 1 screen so the user doesn't have to press additional keys?

    thx...

  7. Tihy, the goal for us is to keep on using w98, not turning w98 into an XP platform.

if you replace all the things we like in w98 by things we don't like in xp, what's the point?

yeah, Fredledingue has got a good point. I don't care about style points. The shutdown menu in Win98 is good enough for me so why bother changing it.

hey, I think it's good to make it more like XP (looks, features like transparency :P , etc).

Maybe best to make each 'feature' optionable, if possible...

Big advantage: no big brother registration.....one of the reasons I won't upgrade (some of my pc's are too old to support XP well, too)...

So there are very good reasons for Revolutions...and I applaud Tihiy for trying :thumbup !!!

  8. Is the card agp or pci? If agp, I figure you only have the one port...if pci, try other positions.

if agp, look at the connector pins on the board....do they all look straight, any bent etcertera? If bent, try to straighten them out to align them with the other pins - unplug power of course...

If that doesn't help or it's intermittent, you may just need to change out the mb....

  9. I think one does NOT want to place a hard drive on the same channel as a cd/dvd rom...which mormally is the second IDE channel....

Currently I have a second drive on my primary channel...thinking of changing it to FAT16....

I am wondering if it's worth it - what is the expected speed difference between a swap on fat16 vs 32?

  10. That's right - FAT16.

    Here's what I do:

Make a logical partition at END of disk-space, of size 768 MB. And then set the swap space to occupy the entire avaialble space on that partition (normally a 768 MB partition might offer only 760 MB of usable space). See that your C: drive does NOT have any partition file.

Are you saying to use C and partition part of it for the swap? Or use a second drive on the same channel and partition it or part of it? I see in a later post you suggest that, but I heard that a swap file should be on the same drive as Windows...

Would the difference be that noticable? Currently I have a D drive and place a fixed swap file there (still fat32). I have 384M ram...

  11. jasinwa, if you still doubt that the KB833989 vgx.dll MS04-028 security update does

not work when using the IE 5.5 browseui.dll and browselc.dll files in IE6 SP1, download

    the vgx.dll update here:

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/c...989-x86-ENU.exe

    and run it for yourself.

I see that, but I was saying that after installing the 2 - 5.5 files, I was asked again to dl the security update, in which one of the 2 files would end up replaced again....so I was talking about having to REINSTALL KB867282....

    vicious circle though, eh?

  12. looks like it's a driver (asus V3800 TNT)....did you change drivers, vid cards or something?

If you really don'y need the file, clean ytour registry (try automatic from some of the freeware reg cleaners out there or manually go thru your registry, search for the word viagart

Also check system.ini for the line that will have the viagart.vxd noted....remove it.

If you need it, reinstall your driver.....

  13. How fast is your old notebook, jasinwa?  I mean what's the CPU and CPU speed of your notebook computer?

Final release of 2.0 may be delayed because Gape and others are trying to add newer files onto there.  The more Win98se hotfixes that are added onto 2.0 the longer it will be delayed.

    hehehehe...it's a speed demon @ P75 with 48M RAM !!!

It actually runs OK as a backup to my backup at home...also with 98Lite and UBDtweaks....

  14. Hi Gape,

When do you think the 2.0 final will release? I have an old notebook with 48M ram and W98SE on it...98lite and UBDtweaks, too...

Antsy to see if your 'unoffical update' will speed anything up...but sounds like a few additions to the final....

Basically all my machines are W98, etc....I don't have ME so can't try MDGx's 98toME update....

looking to make the pc's as fast as possible....

    thx! Jeff
