  1. someone hafto code a new driver for that to be possible.

not sure anyone wuld put that much time into win98.

And it's not very useful at all. It's just a basic SVGA driver for Safe-mode usage.

Modern videocard use drivers that also support 3D Hardware Acceleration :)

It's useful if you need to go to safe mode and hate to jockey around your icons after safemodes 640x480 throws them all out of kilter....since I play/test a lot of sw, it happens on occasion.

At least now, the icons don'tr move around....but it was not pleasant to view, either!

  2. Sounded good, tried it...had some problems I'll report.

    1. Downloaded and installed the latest at the dl site. First thing I noticed was that Win Explorer was part German.

    2. Upon removal, a number of desktop icons had no graphic, only the default icon when no icon available (but they were available prior to removing this sw!)

    2. I removed it and it killed my intellipoint 4.12 drivers (couldn't click the scroll button anymore).

I think it would also be great if there was a selection prompt for which items I want installed or not.

  3. I've read the comments about NTFS and 98 not being able to see the drive....guess I don't understand.

Just got a notebook for my son, the drive is NTFS. I went thru a share process and I can see the drive fine (except for OS directories, for some reason, still working on that!).

I can place files on it and pull files from it, from my 98SE system.

I have no special NTFS software, read only or otherwise!

    ???

  4. get rid of unneeded namespaces in the registry....treying to fin the unneeded keys now...

here's one of you don't use webfolders.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace

    another...if u don't use scheduled tasks

    ;--------------------------------------------------------------

;Speed up Network Browsing by removing Network Scheduled Tasks

    ;--------------------------------------------------------------

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace\{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}]

  5. question: before you reformatted the hd, did you use the same soundcard drivers?

....maybe an earlier set, have you verified what you have is the latest, etc?

Have you installed another s card to see if it's drivers are ok (meaning the pc shuts down ok and antother card works fine)?

  6. Q254660 contains MSMOUSE.VXD, VMOUSE.VXD and MOUHID.VXD, all files version 4.10.2223. Maybe you were confused by Product Version 4.10.2222?

    Petr

thank you, I did notice at home it showed 4.10.2223 and maybe I did look at product version :blushing: I will verify the same in the office, where I first did the update.

  7. Last build officially installed by MS patches/updates/hotfixes is 4.10.2223, and that's the 1 u should have if u r running 98SE without MS IntelliPoint software.

Is the 4.10.2223 supposed to be in that hotfix Q254660 ?

I dl'ed it from the link for Q254660 on the first post in this topic and it's 4.10.2222 (I extracted the exe with 7zip and checked the version).

    So where is 4.10.2223 ?

  8. 98se will always be ok based on a user's need of course.

I have been posting in the XP section here with an interesting (to me) finding.

I have multiple pc's, so on 1 of them (a bit older but not like a P1 or something!) I thought I'd test 98SE and XP in speed.

The pc is an AMD Athlon 800, oc to 950....384M ram, 32M 4x agp ati card.....so I ran timing tests on scan programs (centered on spybot S/D), etc....

    Running 98SE lite, pretty tweaked out - 1m 37s

Running XP somewhat tweaked (removed file protection and killed many services/unneeded proggies) - 3m 0s

So on that XP forum, many are saying 'yup' that 98 will run faster but is less stable! I find my 98 pretty stable I must say and the speed difference is huge imo.

  9. Yes, on the surface XP does run slower than 98, but do you understand why and the reasoning for it?

IMO, the benefits outweigh the costs. I'd rather have a rock solid system that runs a bit slower than one that runs really fast, but crashes... and I loose my work.

I hear ya but here's my take:

    1. it seems a LOT slower, not just a bit slower (3m vs 1.5m)

    2. My 98SE lite, totally tweaked....does not crash (well, as noted, maybe once a week but I test a lot of SW that is beta, buggy, etc.). When I run my normal stuff (web, Office and similar), 98 doesn't crash. Believe it or not!

But I did want to play with XP, learn to tweak it, which I have somewhat already.

    thx! Jeff

  10. thx for the explanation Jaclaz....it helped some.

Zxian - it's not the actual speed of the scan (for me)...it was the curiousity of the diff in speed....but the scan speed (with other tests) points out to me that XP runs slower than 98, which was VERY disappointing....not only a little slower, but quite a bit slower it seems....

  11. I have shut off a lot of services already, removed proggies like messenger, etc..

As noted I have xp and 98se on 2 different drives.....but the xp drive is pretty bare. The 98SE is an 80G and has lots of other proggies (the drive has maybe 6 Gig used)....so I think files are even

  12. PLEASE NOT another Windows98 is faster than XP, yes, but it is outdated flame war, we already had one:

    Hi Jaclaz,

AsI hope you can see in my initial post, I was not trying a "98se is faster than xp" post...I was simply asking why 98se ran programs faster (I tested a few but spybot and the like were really revealing in the speed difference).

I still don't underdtand it - my system is not that old so I was surprised!
