  1. try disabling the firewall
  2. Thanks. Heres an odd one i turn off the firewall - same problem (turn off firewall on both server and client) disable firewall on server only - same problem disable firewall on client - problem resolved (this is with the firewall turned on the server) so how am i suppose to configure the firewall on the client if the only way to resolve it is to disable the service? thx
  3. Guys i keep getting this ID showing on my Windows XP machine when logging onto my server with the newly released SP1: Event Type: Failure Audit Event Source: Security Event Category: Detailed Tracking Event ID: 861 Date: 05/04/2005 Time: 22:17:15 User: Kill-Bill\Quentin Tarantino Computer: PulpFiction Description: The Windows Firewall has detected an application listening for incoming traffic. Name: - Path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstsc.exe Process identifier: 4056 User account: Quentin Tarantino User domain: Kill-Bill Service: No RPC server: No IP version: IPv4 IP protocol: UDP Port number: 1221 Allowed: No User notified: No For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. that MS link is a waste of time as it never answers anything. I have configured Security Configuration Wizard to what i thought was right (unless you guys know why this occurs). I have also disabled the firewall on my server which only speeds up me connecting to the server (Ill get to that problem very soon)- Could you experts tell me whats going on here please and how to resolve? also i have done the following after reading this on MS website Open Computer Configuration, open Administrative Templates, open Network, open Network Connections, open Windows Firewall, and then click Domain Profile and enabled "Allow local program exceptions" - that didnt do anything Thx as always to you guys
  4. What is the difference between a small business server (SBS) and Windows Server 2003? thanks
  5. Im curious to know if Web Interface for Remote Administration allows me to have my own website for personal use? - reading the help file im slightly confused as im not sure whats remote desktop got to do here as MS already offers RDP- Anyone know a good tutorial i can read upon? Thanks peeps
  6. Ok i installled SP1 with XP pro as my client the bugger of a problem is i can do anything when the FireWall is off but not a lot when its on. I have already tried opening these ports (53,1155) and others. The problem is i cant get my client to login in fast as it use to (turning off the firewall resolves all issues) so anyone kindly enough has the answer to this stupid problem? Also i had the problems stated in event viewer but i have checked the good old MS KB but it tell me to check the DNS settinsg which are 100% correct - as i said i think i need to know which ports i need open to allow my client PCs allow access to my server. Thx
  7. Sorry i know this isnt any help to you - but im glad this isnt my problem ()
  8. anyone
  9. Sorry if this is in the wrong section. Does anyone know how i can get VHS to DVD and what i need etc etc - like a beginners guide to what to do from step 1? i am running WinXP pro so not sure what i need and where to start. thx
  10. Thanks - done that and i can connect from my PC to the server using VPN (as a test) so how does this allow my mate to connect to my Server? as theres no option to type in the VPN address to point at my domain or anything regarding him having access to my domain? OR is it that when he connects via VPN the connection this would allow him to connect to my domain using the usual methods to connect to a domain? Thank you very much
  11. Guys some of you may know my configuration for my network (well been on this forum quite a lot as you know) so my question is am i looking at the correct guide to set up a VPN http://www.guidescentral.com/help/singlenic.html for the following D-Link DSL 300T router - all PCs have internal static IP addresses errrrr aim is to allow my mate whos hundred miles away to connect to my domain -i think thats all the info you need Thanks
  12. Sorry guys for the million questions - i have a mate whos about 200 miles away from me after some thought i wondered how i could get him to connect his machine to my domain as currently hes not part of my network? Is this possible if so how or if you could provide me with links to read upon. Thanks
  13. Not sure what you mean by if its an actual router but its a DSL judging by the name and i would say it is a router as i can give stsic IP addresses to my clients etc - hope that helps
  14. I was only offering an opinion to D&R, which is why i wrote if it may not be recommended as im fairly new to Windows Server 2003 and thought to share an idea.
  15. Ill try that. Thats what i do now but since the screen is real old and heavy i have to get it from another room and then plug it in (yes i know im being lazy) No ive not tried that but ill try that today - does this allow me to view the screen as if i have a monitor connected to the server? Thanks
  16. nope that has nothing to do with what you want ... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What if i changed the routers default gateway address from 192.168.0.1 to my own - would that help or is it not recommneded (would mean they can only access this page IF they get the address right) some users may know how to work around this
  17. This is a good question but what if i didnt want to allow some users to view my drives content???????? - the GPO only has daft sequences such as Restrict Drive A or A and B or A, B and C - so far i thought about removing share access and putting in peeps names that i want to allow access (right click the drive then sharing/ security) but dont know if thats recommended
  18. Thanks peeps for your help again, id buy you all a drink if i could for your help B) . I think Terminal services is what i need to read upon - beware for further questions
  19. Ok just incase someone comes across this problem then you may want to use Remote desktop rather than the web based version. I tried to use the web based version and had all these problems that ive described but the minute i used remote desktop i entered my ip and domain and almost fell off my chair (errrrrrr as in i saw the login screen)
  20. I want him to be able to access the system to run certain things whilst im away (allow certain accounts that get locked to unlock them) etc etc
  21. I tried that and it already has the user's name in the box. Thanks for your advice but this user needs to access the domain just for a short while but id rather not have him have admin rights - also incase this helps the user is a memeber of ONLY Remote Desktop Users and Domain Users
  22. I tried that but i still get the error "The local policy of the System does not permit you to logon interactively" i have added this user to "Access this computer from the network " as you advised and added him to the Remote desktop users too - what could i be doing wrong? Thank you also whats the difference between the "Group Policy Object Editor" and "Default Group Policy"?
  23. When i want a user to access the server to do something i have to assign them admin rights. Is there anyway to grant them access using remote desktop without giving them admin rights? ive tried to add the user to the remote desktop group but that doesnt resolve the issue (right click my computer then click remote and add)? Thanks
