  1. "Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see," he added !.. In Major Blow To Ableism, Airline Hires Blind Pilot U.S.·Oct 27, 2022 · BabylonBee.com MIRAMAR, FL — Spirit Airlines has hammered yet another nail into the coffin of ableism by hiring the world's first blind commercial airline pilot. Flight 2047 from Orlando to Saint Louis is set to be the first vision-impaired flight. The co-pilot will reportedly wear a blindfold for the duration of the flight out of solidarity with its blind captain. According to sources, Isaac "Fuselage" Bartimaeus dreamed of being a pilot ever since someone described to him what planes look like. The rookie pilot, who has been blind since birth, earned a pilot's license after spending two years studying theoretical flight. Due to his condition, he was not permitted to fly a plane as part of his schooling. Spirit Airlines waived the requisite 1,500 hours of flight time as a way of accommodating his disability. "It's 2022! We need to set aside our differences by understanding we are not different. I learned from Ratatouille that anyone can cook so it makes sense that anyone can fly," said Spirit Airlines CEO Denver Estrada. "We also hope this publicity will help people understand that we are a real airline with real airplanes you can ride in." Reporters were briefly permitted on the plane to witness history as Captain Bartimaeus introduced himself to the passengers. "This is your captain speaking. I'd like to welcome you all aboard. I am excited to fly you all into the sky," said Captain Bartimaeus. "Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see," he added, referencing his favorite film, Event Horizon. 7. Kefir: An Ancient Beverage with Modern Benefits As the healthful benefits of fermented foods and drinks gain ever more recognition, kefir stands out for its ability to promote overall wellness. By Alex Lewin And Raquel Guajardo Fizzy fermented drinks, such as kombucha, are gaining popularity, and rightfully so — the friendly bacteria that thrive in the fermentation process mean better health for those who drink them. In this kombucha craze, however, one important drink has been left behind: kefir. Made from milk or water fermented with live grains, kefir is a powerful probiotic containing a diverse system of healthy microbes. By helping consumers reestablish a balanced gut ecosystem, kefir strengthens the digestive and immune systems. This can result in lowered blood pressure and blood sugar, the alleviation of acid reflux, and a calmer nervous system. 8. What Are Ancient Grains? The most nutritious whole grains have been unaltered since their domestication. By Bevin Cohen Spelt and Khorasan can be used instead of wheat flour. Add millet and other cereal grains for added flavor and nutrition. What are ancient grains? The most nutritious whole grains have been unaltered since their domestication. Add value to your farm and nutrition your plate by including them in your garden. Ancient grain” is a term commonly used as a marketing device by the health-food industry. Although there’s no technical definition, it’s widely accepted that “ancient grains” are grown for their edible seeds and have remained relatively unaltered since their original domestication. Modern grains, such as commercial wheat, have been dramatically altered from their original state through extensive breeding. While this has led to the creation of crops better suited to large-scale commercial production, these modern crops often lack the nutrients available in their ancient counterparts. Most ancient grains are part of the grass family, Poaceae, although there are a few exceptions, such as the pseudo-cereals amaranth and buckwheat. In recent years, especially since the pandemic, there’s been an incredible surge of interest in local foods, gardening, and sustainable food production. Of course, the foundation of a sustainable food system is locally grown grains, since these staple crops provide a majority of our caloric intake. Luckily, there’s a diverse selection of nutritious ancient grains, with seeds available for private growers. It doesn’t matter if you’re a small-scale farmer, a homesteader, or even a dedicated home gardener; there’s sure to be an ancient grain that’s perfect for you!... 9. Space rock crashes into Mars, forming crater that revealed ice chunks By Ashley Strickland 19:57 ET(23:57 GMT) 27 October, 2022 Christmas came a little early for NASA's InSight mission when the lander detected a massive earthquake on Mars last December. Now, scientists know what caused the rumble on the red planet. A meteoroid slammed into Mars 2,174 miles (3,500 kilometers) away from the lander and created a new impact crater on the Martian surface. The ground literally shifted beneath InSight on Dec. 24, 2021, when the lander recorded a magnitude 4 Marsquake. Before-and-after photos captured from above by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been circling Mars since 2006, detected a new crater last February. Before-and-after photos taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show where a meteorite crashed into Mars on Dec. 24, 2021. When scientists connected the dots from both missions, they realized it was one of the largest meteorite impacts on Mars since NASA began studying the red planet. Images from the orbiter's two cameras showed the crater's blast zone, allowing scientists to compare it to the epicenter of the earthquake detected by InSight. The journal Science published two new studies Thursday describing the impact and its effects. The space rock also revealed rock-sized chunks of ice when it slammed into Mars. They were found buried closer to the warm Martian equator than any ice ever detected on the planet. Rock-sized chunks of ice can be seen scattered around and outside the rim of the new crater. "The image of the impact was unlike anything I had seen before, with the huge crater, the exposed ice and the dramatic blast zone preserved in Martian dust," Liliya Posiolova, director of orbiter orbiter science operations at Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego, said in a statement. "I couldn't help but imagine what it must have been like to witness the impact, the atmospheric explosion and the debris ejected kilometers below." Studying the ice revealed by the impact will help scientists better understand past climate conditions on Mars, as well as how and when the ice was deposited and buried. The researchers estimated that the meteoroid, the name for a space rock before it hit the ground, measured between 5 and 12 meters (16 to 39 feet). While this would have been small enough to burn up in Earth's atmosphere, the same cannot be said for Mars, which has a thin atmosphere of only 1% of Earth's density. When the meteoroid crashed into Mars, it created a crater in the Amazonis Planitia region of the planet 150 meters (492 feet) wide and 21 meters (70 feet) deep. Some of the material ejected from the crater landed up to 37 kilometers (23 miles) away. NASA teams also captured the sound of the impact. The images captured by the orbiter, along with seismic data recorded by InSight, make the impact one of the largest craters in our solar system ever observed. Mars is littered with massive craters, but they are much older than any mission to explore the red planet. "It's unprecedented to find a new impact of this size," Ingrid Daubar, InSight's impact science lead at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, said in a statement. "It's an exciting moment in geologic history, and we got to witness it." If an earthquake like this had occurred on Earth, it would be "big enough to be felt, but not big enough to cause a ton of damage," Daubar said. About 1,000 earthquakes of this size occur on Earth each year, but Mars is less active than our planet, so it was "pretty big" for the red planet, he said. The earthquake that resulted from the impact also created surface waves, or a seismic wave that moved along the top of the Martian crust. InSight's data from the event will help scientists study the planet's crust and learn more about its structure. Studying the craters and their rate of formation can help scientists pinpoint the geologic timeline of Mars. Impact craters also excavate material and bring it to the surface, such as the ice revealed by the December 24 strike. Ice beneath the Martian surface could be used for drinking water, rocket propellant, and even crops and plants for future astronauts. And the fact that the ice was found so close to the equator, the warmest region of Mars, could make it an ideal place to land manned missions to the red planet. Previously, InSight had "heard" and detected space rocks hitting Mars, but the December impact was the largest. Since landing in 2018, the mission has revealed new details about Mars' crust, mantle, and core and detected 1,318 martemotes. Unfortunately, InSight's mission is running out of time. Increasing amounts of dust have settled on the lander's solar arrays, only exacerbated by a continent-sized dust storm detected on Mars in September, and their energy levels continue to drop. The beige clouds are a continent-sized dust storm photographed by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on Sept. 29. The locations of the Perseverance, Curiosity and InSight missions are also labeled. Fortunately, the storm did not pass directly over InSight; otherwise, the darkness from the storm would have ended the mission. But the weather event has kicked up a large amount of dust into the atmosphere and reduced the amount of sunlight reaching InSight's solar arrays, said Bruce Banerdt, InSight principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Mission scientists estimate that InSight will likely shut down in the next six weeks, ending a promising mission to unlock the interior of Mars. "For the past four years, we've gone well beyond the planned mission lifetime of two years," Banerdt said. "And even now that we're winding it down, we're still getting these amazing new results." 16. Life Saving Hero Dogs - Pup Stories on Creature.com Pup Stories Dogs are amazing creatures! They are truly man's best friend. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, pulling loads, protection, assisting police and military, companionship, and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. Dogs also have displayed heroism throughout history. They are perhaps the first animals domesticated by humans, and have long lived by our side. Most dog owners attest to their loyalty, affection and faithfulness. Some dogs though, through self-sacrifice and valor have made names for themselves in our history books. Their very names suggest faithfulness and courage. Entire breeds are often associated with specific tasks. The Dalmatian is closely associated with firehouses, especially in the U.S. German Shepherds have old ties to law enforcement, and the St. Bernard, with whiskey barrel bouncing about its neck, is known for saving many a man, woman, and child lost in snowy mountains. 17. Beautiful sea sapphire can make itself invisible in an instant Video: Shimmery sea sapphires disappear in a flash Red and blue and green and violet and… Invisible. Sea sapphires have been described as “the most beautiful animal you’ve never seen”. Even when you do see them, they can vanish in an instant (see video, above). But how do they pull off their trick? This tiny crustacean has alternating layers of hexagonal guanine crystals and cytoplasm on its back that reflect light in a sparkling array of hues. Different species shimmer in different colours, ranging from gold to blue. The colour is determined by the distance between the crystals and the angle at which light hits them. In blue sea sapphires, the distance between the crystals is about the same as the wavelength of blue light, so the animals appear blue. The angle of light hitting the sea sapphire also affects the colour and lets it perform its disappearing act. For the species in the video, for example, the animal’s tilt of 45 degrees causes the reflected light to slip into the ultraviolet spectrum, and the animal becomes invisible to our eyes. Only the males have these amazing colours, the females are completely translucent. Males swim in spirals, probably to show off their shimmering hues to potential mates, says Lia Addadi at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. “An intriguing question that still remains is whether the differences in colour are genetic and each male is born with a defined colour, or whether they can control the reflected colour,” says Addadi. Understanding how the light reflection trick works could inspire new reflective or anti-reflective coatings in glasses, mirrors and optical display systems, says Addadi. 18. Science Confirms That Forgetting Things Is Actually A Sign Of Very High Intelligence EVERYONE FORGETS SOMETHING FROM TIME TO TIME. IT CAN BE FROM LEAVING AN UMBRELLA AT A RESTAURANT TO AN ADDRESS DISAPPEARING FROM YOUR BRAIN. I MYSELF HAVE A HARD TIME KEEPING TRACK OF ALL THE PASSWORDS YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER NOWADAYS. OVER THE YEARS I HAVE GIVEN A TRY TO DIFFERENT MEMORY EXERCISES AND TRICKS TO IMPROVE MY OWN, BUT IT RARELY WORKS FOR ME. MAYBE IT’S ONLY FAIR TO ACCEPT THAT YOU’RE A BIT FORGETFUL AND PROBABLY GOOD AT SOMETHING ELSE. HOWEVER, SOME TIME AGO, WE CAME BY A FANTASTIC RESEARCH, WHICH IS ABOUT FORGETFULNESS! IT IS A STUDY WHICH CAME TO A RATHER AMAZING CONCLUSION. IT TURNS OUT THAT HAVING A BAD MEMORY DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NEGATIVE. SURE, IT’S DIFFICULT FOR A PERSON TO FORGET THINGS FROM TIME TO TIME, BUT THIS COULD BE A SIGN OF SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF, THE SITE LIKEWIFTY REPORTS. COMPETITIVE INFORMATION YES, IN THE FUTURE YOU SHOULD PROBABLY STOP GIVING YOURSELF A BAD TIME ABOUT HOW FORGETFUL YOU ARE. THIS NEW RESEARCH INDICATES THAT FORGETFULNESS CAN BE A SIGN OF VERY HIGH INTELLIGENCE. I’D HAVE THOUGHT IT WAS THE OTHER WAY AROUND, BUT IT’S NOT. INSTEAD, IF YOU REMEMBERED EVERYTHING, THEN IT WOULD MEAN THAT YOU HAVE A HARD TIME MAKING DECISIONS BECAUSE YOU HAVE SO MUCH COMPETING DATA TAKING PART OF YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS. YOU CAN STOP WORRYING AN INTELLIGENT PERSON’S BRAIN LETS GO OF THINGS THAT IT NO LONGER NEEDS, WHICH FACILITATES THINKING AND DECISION MAKING. THIS ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE, WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT! SO FROM THIS POINT FORWARD, NO MORE PUTTING YOURSELF DOWN ABOUT ALL THE LITTLE THINGS THAT ESCAPE THE BRAIN. INSTEAD, YOU CAN THINK ABOUT YOURSELF AS A VERY INTELLIGENT PERSON WHO HAS CONSIDERABLY MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO THINK ABOUT. 19. Homeless Man’s Birthday Party For His Dog Warms The Hearts Of Many, Leading To A Better Life For Them All No birthday is complete without a birthday cake with a candle on top. Your one wish per year, how will you use it, what will you wish for? Maybe a new car or a vacation to Malibu, mayhaps a wish for world peace or infinite amounts of money? Well, we know what one man wished for as his dream came true nearly as soon as the candles were blown out. A homeless man was seen throwing a humble birthday party for his two dogs, singing them ‘Happy Birthday’, giving them hugs, and treating them to cake all whilst sitting on the stairs of a public park, having no other means of shelter. But that would soon change. As always, don’t forget to leave your thoughts below. Let’s get into the story! Well here’s something you don’t see every day! A man named Choco sat on some stairs at a local park with two dogs wearing party hats ... One sunny evening, a man walking through a park in Bucaramanga, Colombia, saw a homeless man throwing what seemed to be a birthday party for his pet dogs. The man named Choco was sitting on stairs alongside his companions Shaggy and Nena, almost as if basking in the late sunshine, however, the party hats sitting atop of the pup’s heads told a different story. They were celebrating the birthday of Shaggy the pup. Cake and candles were revealed and he started singing ‘Happy Birthday’... The bystander decided to capture the event on camera and we’re very glad he did as what happened next is truly heartwarming. Choco gave each of the sleepy pups some pets before unveiling a small cake and candles. He then started singing to his two companions a version of ‘Happy Birthday’. It appeared that it was Shaggy’s birthday and Choco was throwing him a little party. Two candles were lit on the small cake, the pups carefully observing their owner’s actions, thinking of their wish... The candles were blown out and a wish was made as the pups received pets and kisses... The video quickly gained traction, encouraging people to donate food, supplies and money to help get Choco and his pups back on their feet... Wishes do come true, it seems, but the sad truth is – the rare person becomes homeless for any fault of their own... Homelessness is a serious social issue that greatly affects those unfortunate enough to experience it... Having a pet can greatly increase morale and chances to better your life, though it comes with additional costs... The changes to perception and stigma of homelessness are crucial to helping solve the issue and providing help to those that need it most... ... one thing is for certain – animals save us as much as we save them... It may be something that astronomers have never before identified. And despite the fact that we cannot see the enormous thing, astronomers have recently discovered its effects, while not having seen the object itself. Astronomer at Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics researcher Ana Bonaca described the mysterious object as “a dense bullet of something.” Bonaca presented proof of the existence of the object at a convention of the American Physical Society in Denver. In our galaxy’s longest star stream, GD-1, evidence of the object that is creating holes was identified. A stellar stream is a collection of stars that orbits a galaxy that was originally a globular cluster or dwarf galaxy but has been ripped apart and stretched along its orbit by tidal forces. ...
