  1. Just did this for my Dad, who was migrating from XP to a Windows 10 (I know!) machine. OE Classic lets you just copy your .DBX local email folder files to some location on the new machine and voila: it's (almost very nearly) like you're still using OE6! Same look and feel. The biggest caveat is that drag-and-drop file attachment doesn't work in OE Classic; you have to use an Explorer window to locate files to attach to your email (a headache for my aged dad, who's used to doing things a certain way). The entire migration process took less than an hour from start to finish. And Dad was delighted with the end result; he didn't have to change or adapt to something new. Not free, but fairly nominal. (Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with OE Classic -- just a very satisfied customer.)
  2. I got an alert for 3 new updates today: KB4462230 (Excel 2010), KB4462223 (Office 2010), and KB4464520 (Office 2010). After updating, neither Word nor Excel would start (with the usual "DLL entry point missing" message). Taking a tip from Mathwiz, above, I uninstalled KB4462223 first and then all was well, with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access all working normally again. Thanks Mathwiz!
  3. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is a view, not an app. From O'Reilly, "The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer isn’t a standalone application in the traditional sense, but rather a simple viewer window. When Windows XP is first installed, it is the default viewer for [emf, gif, jpeg, bmp, png, tif, wmf]" And from CNET, "The command to run Windows Picture and Fax viewer is: rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll ImageView_Fullscreen path-to-picture "
  4. Re Photo Viewer -- I posted above (https://msfn.org[...]comment=1159925) recently about the XP update, KB4487085, which breaks Windows Picture Viewer. It's unrelated to Office updates. Uninstall that one and you'll be fine again (apart from not benefiting from the fix to GDI).
  5. Thanks, Dave - yep, KB4462174 appears to be problematic, whereas the other 3 updates I got from Microsoft (KB4018313:Office; KB4462177:Office; KB4462186:Excel) all seem to be fine. Slightly OT, but if you're also getting XP updates, KB4487085 (GDI) will break you (among other symptoms: "The procedure entry point sprintf_s could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll", Windows Picture Viewer failing to load, ...) sprintf_s ... really? It's a standard British bird!
  6. @JohnnieB, you can find out what updates you've received and the dates they were downloaded to your system by running Windows Security Centre and invoking the "Check for the latest updates from Windows Update" option (menu on left), then selecting the "Review your update history" option in the Windows Update explorer window which will subsequently appear (left side menu again, top option). Cheers!
  7. They've now pulled KB2863821 as well. Neither of the updates Dave cited is available on Microsoft Update Catalog anymore. Definitely interesting!
