  1. I just wanted to update this in case anyone happens to find this topic.

It's odd I can't find good utilities to simply fix this long issue. An easy solution to this problem is to simply boot from a Linux distro from CD, USB, or any bootable media, then rename the file there. It's a bit frustrating Windows XP holds such a limitation but it's the most user-friendly one I know of.

  2. Hello MSFN,

Today, I am seeking to rename a file on Windows XP that I extracted on the machine. The character limit was too high (originally came from a Windows 10 machine) , so Windows won't allow me to move the file or even rename it.

I tried looking at utilities like File Name Fixer and Long Path Fixer, but neither has done the job...the first one costs 40 USD and the second one cannot rename (or even see) the folders with the file.

Is there any free, open source software with a GUI that allows me to rename?

    Thank you for your time!

  3. I personally would advise the OP downgrades. Windows 11 is an utter mess...

Seeing the computer is a 6th generation, the only options would really be Windows 7/8.1/10. As far as I know, Windows XP and Vista won't have full driver support. Windows XP driver support is hopeless unless someone knows how to backport and reverse engineer the drivers, Windows Vista is a gamble at best and may or may not work with Windows 7 drivers (it probably wouldn't work).

If I have to keep Windows, I would go with a stripped-down Windows 10 and use Linux. Linux is a lot more stable than Windows 10 in my opinion despite all its flaws.

  4. Hello,

I've been using bluetooth for a direct transfer of files to my Windows XP laptop using a wireless bluetooth 4.0 dongle. However, the wireless 4.0 dongle did not work on Vista. Whenever I attempted to use the dongle, I would successfully pair, but Windows Vista then demands a driver for the device unlike XP for a "peripheral" device. This appears to be an issue with my Windows Vista.

EDIT: SOLUTION for Bluetooth 4.0 Wireless Dongle for Windows Vista!! Fix peripheral device!! Requires installing a driver.

I recently got a Bluetooth 5.0 dongle USB adapter, but that too does not appear to work on my Vista PC.F

I tried to search the hardware ID (USB\VID_0A12&PID_0001&REV_8891) but had no luck in finding a driver.

A bluetooth cardbus seems pretty convenient. With Bluetooth, Windows 98SE/ME can:

    • Reliably (?) transfer/receive files from even iOS and Android devices (once Android lost the ability to be seen as USB, it was game over)
    • Serve as an outstanding wireless music player for bluetooth and vise-versa

    Keep in mind that...

    • This is bluetooth 2.0- limited to 2.1 Mbits/  transfer speed (this is 0.2625 MB/s or 268.8 KB/s- painfully slow)
      • I would not recommend transferring large files due to the unreliability of Windows 9x
    • If streaming music, Windows 9x cannot play 360 KB/s files via bluetooth then
    • Windows 9x cannot support certain invalid characters- be sure all files transferred must use legal ASCII characters only
    • Possibly tether internet connection (would come in handy if all there is in the house is dial-up connection
    • Bluetooth devices like mouse and keyboards?
    • Video game controllers? Though, I'm not sure they would work on Windows 9x.

    Potential Bluetooth:

    • Dell 1U746 01U746 (Dell Part Number 1U746 / 01U746 - Equivalent to Dell PN U5136 / 0U5136 ) - works with the Dell Latitude D500 and D600 and Dell Inspiron 500M and 600M laptop models

    EDIT: More USB dongles!!

    • UD-300M (Bluetooth 3.0) - This is probably the only Bluetooth 3.0 I've found that claims compatibility with Windows 98
    • Blue Diamond Bluetooth Mini USB Adapter (Bluetooth 2.0)
    • IOGEAR GBU221 Bluetooth Adapter (Bluetooth 2.0)
  6. I may or may not have found a workaround to installing UC Browser on Windows Vista. Of course, it's dated to 2017. But, it appears Alibaba discontinued the web browser for PC. Interestingly, I could not find an offline installer.

But, I guess this browser along with possibly Yandex browser might be the only post-Chrome 49 Chromium options for Windows that may not send data back- probably not worth the risk though.

Interesting -- i have never had a problem with RamonUn's "Ringo" MPlayer builds. In fact, it's my default "Send To" media player -- by far the most up-to-date MPlayer for Win9x, and it runs on native Win9x (doesn't need KernelEx). Actually, i never had a problem with Sherpya's "MPlayer On Windows" builds either, or Redxii's "Mplayer For Windows" builds... that is, until they went 'beyond' KernelEx.

    > I usually use a build from Sherpya. I think r34401 (12-7-2011) is the last to work with Win98.

The final KEx build from Sherpya that worked for me on 'plain' KernelEx (no KExt) was r37199 2014-May-11.

    > But the builds from redxii ... when used with KernelEx (default settings). Seems you can use up to r37203 (5-17-2014).

    Same experience here.

Note that Sherpya has also released a more-recent ("experimental / unsupported") native-Win9x player (doesn't need KernelEx) build r38116 in late 2018. Search the page for "Win98 SE build":

    https://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer/

And if i might add: My all-time favorite MPlayer is MPlayerWW by William Wang. It seems that development has stopped and its website is gone, but the last version was r37356, 2015-Jan-13. MPlayer code is embedded within a nice, skin-able GUI executable. It requires basic KernelEx. This is my system default media player! You can still get it at:

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayer-ww/

    - Doug B.

I have a question. Does the GUI load properly with this player? When I tried similar MPlayers, the GUI's usually failed to load and the playback buttons would often cause a crash.

  8. OnlyOffice works gloriously on Windows XP and Vista ;)
I like it far more than WPS Office with its tabbed word documents.

Keep in mind the x64 version requires Visual C++ runtimes! Also, OnlyOffice and WPS Office are a lot heavier compared to OpenOffice. My Duo Core 2 U9600 laptop's fan turns on every time when I run OnlyOffice or WPS!

  9. Hello MSFN,

I am in search of an offline file transfer for Windows XP and Android platforms. Concurrently, I cannot transfer between computers or electronics without having to either use a USB flash drive or an online cloud drive like MEGA.nz, which has severely limited speeds (XP cannot use megasync). If the software can also transfer PC-to-PC, that would also be helpful.

Anything will help. Whether it's bluetooth, LAN, or a wifi transfer. It takes copious amounts of time to simply backup files into a small XP laptop containing a 1TB hard drive.

    Thank you!

To save users time, here are a few methods of transferring from a Windows XP with an mobile:

    • USB Cable
      • Dual-boot Linux with Windows XP, then transfer files via USB using MTP
      • Coolmuster for universal transfer
      • Debug to display phone as USB (many models cannot do this)
    • FTP on WLAN
    • Bluetooth devices (requires installing Bluetooth File Transfer on Android in order to copy files from Windows XP)

Title pretty much says it all. I've been scouring the net for like a week plus now off an on. Collecting whatever Sigmatel drivers I could find and trying them out. After accumulating a ton (and screw that sounddrivers site, it seems 100% bogus?) none of them work still for 98.

Someone had made a nice driver package for the D600 with two drivers, one of which worked on a D600 I had built previously but did not work on this D610, it says the chip is a 9751, not a 9750 like in the D600.

If anyone could help I'd very very appreciative.

Quick aside, I also can't seem to get the USB to stop being dumb, using nusb 3.1 or 3.3 I think it is, if I remove the ICH6 usb controller it will load up correctly and work and I can use a usb drive, then upon reboot it gets a yellow exclamation and stops working. If I go safe mode and remove it, it seems to work for one go again, or maybe it was that and also turning off usb emulation in bios. My brain is turning to mush.

I haven't even gotten to the wireless and ethernet drivers yet. Used Scitech for the video which is working good so far and tends to do OK on the 915 chipsets.

Also, I've had issues using Windows 98 on the D600. For some reason, Windows 98SE was always sluggish for no reason. I had to stick with ME because it was more stable. Windows ME has better WDM driver support even if it ain't much. It was a lot less of a hassle to setup and update than 98SE.

  11. Hello!

As the title states, I am seeking a diary/journal software for my old PCs! Google has not been my friend in my search and softpedia's options are very few (that aren't paid-for options), so I'm asking MSFN once again.

Preferably, I would like to export all entries as a PDF. If I could insert images, that's a bonus.

  12. Hello MSFN,

A year ago, I opened up a topic concerning the matter but found it locked for unknown reasons.

I believe I have collected the majority of system drivers for this system. Unfortunately, I do not have a physical system. Is anyone here willing to test how these drivers fare on a Windows XP system? I have collected all essential drivers, minus audio (couldn't find one).

Finding this took me a lot of searching (looking into the series, using Dibya's old topic, internet archive, etc.)

All files should be fine, but I am kinda skeptical of the audio. Apparently, it is modified to run on Windows XP and is done by driverpack solution. I do not think it is malware considering I used them a lot back in 2015.

    Note: requires .NET framework 3.5!

  13. Hello,

I am attempting to seek modern web browsers that use the least amount of system resources in general, and want to compile a list for such. PCs with only 1 or 2 gigabytes of ram still exist out there, and it's probably a good idea to provide resources.

A couple web browser examples (albeit dated) are Opera 12.18, Maxthon Nitro, and Qtweb. More modern examples are Firefox Lite, qutebrowser, Midori, Falkon, K-Meleon, Otter Browser, Opera GX, and Roytam1's Firefox 45 no SSE version, UR Browser, SlimBrowser, Ungoogled Chrome, Rocket Browser?, Avant Browser???, FlameSky, SharpBrowser, Lunescape???. I've found that XP backports of web browsers appear to be slower than regular Chrome? I've found the Kafan to be a bit sluggish and use a lot more ram on a Intel Core Duo 2 PC compared to my Pentium M w/ Windows 7 and the latest version of official chrome.

I've heard Chromium is faster than Google Chrome because a lot of features in Google Chrome are removed. If there are custom branches, I would love to know and compare their speeds! I've heard slimjet might be faster than Chrome? Even branches of Firefox and Chrome and prove to be far more faster and optimizing of system resources.

I seek software of all types that are lightweight: video editors, screen recorders (like CamStudio), screen capture (nothing beats faststone screen capture 5.3), media players (I've seen nothing beat MPC-HC),

If you can output composite video, many old TV tuners had video input and could act as capture cards.

Or use a fast HDD/SSD and a software solution with fastest/disabled compression.

I am very new to this...I haven't used a DVD player, VCR, or any of these things in a very long time.

In theory, would performance be bad with recording if I used an I7 PC from 2015? The capture cards I've found so far claim to do 720 or 1080p.

Maybe another device has to do the screen recording for you than your old Windows 98 computer. I did this once through plugging the Composite video output of my normal graphics card (ATI Rage something...) to my VHS player. And so the computer screen appeared in the television, ready to be recorded on tape. Probably you could set up a newer computer, being equipped with a good grahpics card that can recieve signals, recording the screen output for you.

At least I can say that working VGA-to-HDMI adapters do exist, so if the signal should arrive at your recieving machine.

Any good converter (preferably cheaper) recommendations are appreciated! I wouldn't have any issue using a newer PC to record the older one.

Furthermore, would a VGA splitter work? My Pentium 4 PC's only video card is a single VGA port, so I will have to use a splitter to duplicate the screen. I'm just not sure if the capture card would still work or not.

  16. I've been posting a lot today...

For testing video games on a potato PC, I must install Windows 7 or later to access steam, origin, and other modern video game clients.

The problem is my PC is not working with a Windows 7 or 10 bootable usb flash drive. I tried to boot from the flash drive, but my monitor then gives me a "no signal" screen, then loops back to the regular boot screen.

This PC is very dated and has about 768MB of ram, a Pentium 4 HT. However, Windows XP claims it has DirectX 9. Video card is a FX5100.

Any ideas to get Windows 7 on this PC would be very appreciated!

    System Manufacturer: HP Pavilion 061
    System Model: D7222Z-ABA A550Y
    BIOS: BIOS Date: 03/19/04 13:28:07 Ver: 08.00.09

EDIT1: I tried to have the USB installation formatted as FAT32...it did not work.

EDIT2: Changing boot order did not fix anything.

EDIT3: Searching around more, I figured out that I need a bios update in order to run Windows 7...my issue here is the official HP website removed support for this model and archive.org is missing the drivers...

EDIT4: Found a copy of the BIOS here, however I know it will not be effective because it is the current version my desktop uses.

EDIT6: Got access to HP's FTP...it is very confusing to navigate.

EDIT5: Searched driverguide, drivercollection, HP's ftp won't let me access it, and xp-drivers did not provide me any luck...

Worked! Had the oddest twist: just startup Windows 7 Starter Edition in Windows XP and upgrade from there!

  17. Hello!

I plan on installing Windows 7 or 8.1 on a hp pavilion a550y. My specs are very very old (Pentium 4) and the PC has about 768 MB of ram in total.

Where can I start for optimizing Windows? In order to use this OS for testing video games (a lot require steam and/or origin), I must figure out how I can get the idle time alone to be low. I tried installing a vanilla Windows 10 on the machine, but the official Microsoft installer just did not work when I plugged my flash drive into the machine.

I would use Windows XP, but I can't because it's incompatible with a lot of modern applications.

All tips and where to start is appreciated!

  18. Hello MSFN,

Today I am in search of a video capture card for my HP Pavilion a550y desktop and Dell Latitude D600 laptop. I need to find something that holds compatibility with Windows 9x and 2000. I am quite a newbie to this.

Normally, I would just use a screen recorder but doing so is pretty much impossible at a good quality on ancient hardware. I cannot record full screen, and if I do, I will severely lower the frames per second while testing game applications.

Alternatively, would it work in theory to plug in a VGA converter to a modern HDMI capture card?

If the oldest that can be found is a Windows XP capture card, then that's fine.

    Please tell me your recommendations!
