More generally, instead of asking help for the actual problem you are having, you are currently asking help for the way you think your problem should be solved, which may or may not be the right one
.Thanks for the suggestion with testdisk. Besides that... your opinion on what I stated is just that, YOUR opinion and flawed. Chkdsk does fix mbr issues as well bad drive sectors as does fdisk.

How is it possible to run chckdsk for a drive that is not initialized (no drive letter, etc) in disk manager? The external drive had previously worked and suspect the MBR is corrupted. Otherwise I receive the message "virtual disk manager - incorrect function."

Love the hoops... the nVidia chipset (750i FTW) does not support AHCI... so running Sanitary Erase, which needs the controller set to IDE vs SATA, can not be done.

Well, from what I understand...that's why TRIM is there... to obscure data from recovery. Running a DoD or Gutmann pass over a NON TRIM device is useless, the data will always be there and is recoverable. Once TRIM is enabled SSD data is nearly impossible to recover. So, the reason writing over and over, DoD or Gutmann, you kill the CELLS and lifespan...eventually it will fail because the CELLS fill with copied data, SSD drives (CELLS) need to be purged. Unlike mechanical drives the data is saved on platters you could run an infinite number of 0/1's until it mechanically fails.
Crucial boards state 'Sanitary Erase' from OCZ... still waiting on word to what is what. I really do not want a coaster.

Hadn't seen anything that is related. I really have no idea...this is an SSD drive so, perhaps something is lingering deep in one of the chips. I've reformatted this drive to EFS, Fat16, Fat32, NTFS, reloaded an XP image, installed Fedora and all seem to work fine, but this Windows 7 Image. Just stumped...this image was never touched or had this crap software on it.
As for writing multiple 0/1's or low level format to the SSD drive to wipe it...I hear that is not a good. I don't know what alternatives there are to wipe an SSD. I'm wondering, since reformatting does not delete data on SSD Cells, that perhaps...the chips on this drive still recognize the software installed with Windows 7, even though the software is technically NOT installed and this image never being touched, it's what had been copied and formatted over the Cells that is trying to make some relation with Windows 7. I don't know I can't explain it well.

This just happened yesterday evening. Currently I'm running Windows 7 64bit (system specs posted below), everything was running superb until after I decided to evaluate Faronics 'DeepFreeze'. After installing that POS, the application stated it would automatically reboot the system...that wasn't a lie. After the installation it killed everything currently running and exited immediately and rebooted. So, during boot...it took over 45 seconds at the 'Welcome' screen, then displayed a Grey Blank screen with the animated cursor for about a minute. After that finished, still no desktop, nor a login to access the system. So, I read ctrl-alt-shift-F5 brings up the login...I log in and still a grey screen, eventually everything loads, but with problems. Action center displays the firewall is disabled...also the network adaptor has an X around it, which funny enough TCP has all static entries, sidebar widgets are loaded but display a rectangular box no graphic.
After removing Faronics DeepFreeze ... rebooted several times , safe mode , safe mode networking. All result in LONG boot times and the Grey blank screen. Eventually, everything will load. Well, I have default acronis image backed up to a separate drive. I've loaded that...the issue CONTINUES to persist. That image is fine, I loaded it several times after I imaged it! I then tried booting from a Fedora Live USB pen, everything loads fine...no hangs nothing. I installed Fedora, no hangs or anything...even imaged the system with an old copy of acronis XP and that worked flawlessly. I reformatted the drive with the USB Live pen twice...then reimaged the system with my Windows 7 image... here I am, the issue continues to persist! So, uninstalled nvidia network and display drivers, reboot ... issue persists ... reinstalled the drivers ... issue does not seem to resolve itself.
Images display exactly as directly AFTER installing Faronics 'DeepFreeze' and the CURRENT state after formating... and several other OS installs. Windows 7 just doesnt seem to work now.
Immediately after Safemode starts, Help and Support usually displays it's information...it is not here.
TCP/DHCP dependencies sit at "Starting"... with the system running for over an hour now, still starting.
"Failed to connect to windows service..."
Red X on lan icon ... settings are manual ... also Event log is started but unable to access.
This is a fresh image... I can vmware it and works fine, a day ago and the day before the same image worked fine, no changes were made to the image itself.

Anyone know of any handwriting software for Windows 7 non-tablet pc? I'm currently using Sketchbook, but that doesn't offer me much for editing. I need to revise documents I write merge sentences, paragraphs... etc, and prefer to keep my handwriting style, if possible.

Same here. All USB devices work fine, besides this.
Just created a new image... did a full back up and will see where this goes.

Installed it differently this time before I did a reimage. Plugged the wacom in first... let Windows 7 detect the drivers, then installed the Wacom drivers, seems to be working fine now. Guess I'll find out.

Were these installed on a full retail version of Windows 7 or was this an upgrade from XP or Vista to 7?

just tried your suggested drivers... no go. Once the pen touches the pad, it's literally a continuous device disconnect wav., there is also no activity in the device manager. Whereas with the latest drivers it searches, then disconnects then connects, then disconnects, searches.. device manager will display an error on one of the Hid compliant devices, then disappears then reappears.

I have a wacom intuos3. Windows 7 64bit. Installed the current drivers, WacomTablet_612-5, from wacom's support page. Yet, I am experiencing very annoying issues. I've installed the drivers many times, removed them, verified the TabletServiceWacom is set to automatic. Windows 7 detects the tablet there, installs the device and recognizes it by name. However, if I were to place the pen over the tablet, Seven throws a complete fit, throwing the message in the Wacom Control Panel "A supported tablet was not found on the system." This is almost constant... place the pen over the tablet... windows pnp wav file sounds...tantrum...unplug usb...plug usb in...windows detects tablet pnp wave file sounds...place pen over tablet...pnp wav file sounds...tantrum... almost continuous, even after a reboot, the message is persistent.
Now, this Windows 7 image has the Tablet PC components removed. What I hear from Wacom Support, is that the Wacom is completely separate from this service and has no dependencies. They also suggest to disable/remove any such services from within Windows Features. So why in the world would be experiencing nerve wracking issues with this **** thing?
So, IF, it so happens to be dependent on the Windows 7 Tablet PC components... then how can I install these, without having to create a new image that does has them and complete a system repair?

Located the necessary registry keys. I still can't see why Microsoft hasn't fixed this very annoying issue. Still, I noticed a heap load of services and registry entries for the collaboration "Microsoft Groove" service... which is NOT installed nor specified to have installed after installing Office 2010.
Search has been done on Windows 7. Results may vary on previous systems.

Just installed it... a bit annoyed with the installation process. The current system I had running only Outlook, Excel, Word and Powerpoint and with doing a flat out "Upgrade" it had installed the entire application base. Really, if one were to chose "Upgrade" it should relatively upgrade only the installed applications.
Anyhow, I'm having some difficulty locating how I can remove the "Shared Folder Synchronization" ... I do not have share point services installed, nor the little tid bit options, so why would I need such an option?!!

I changed all the tile images in authui.dll , however , the tile still displays a 2D version of it, not beveled as it use to. Also set the secpol.msc to Enable the display of last logged on user. That did not work. Sad to say, I'm not as dedicated to this stuff anymore.

It would be nice if someone would pick up on it... hopefully someone will and have the same idea that the old classic logon was a bit more professional and original. Removing the tile and spinning orb (the welcome screen orb...) is our only option , besides enterprise , for a 'classic' feel.

The cursor, else, orb. Is located in imageres.dll. I'm not certain as to which authui.dll is calling for, in fact if authui.dll is even the correct file to be looking in. I'm guessing, it could possibly be in the file which holds the logon message text(?).

Located the tile, however, the cursor (spinning orb) is not there (authui.dll). Also, the file seems to be packed and unable to replace it with the usaual replacer (http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer/).

Is it possible to remove the 'Tile' at login? If so, how. It's a bit annoying.
Also, remove the Orb (hour glass) upon boot - logon.
The 'Tile' is above username/password
If I find anything I'll share my findings.

Would be nice to see a tool that can do all this... drag and drop your VHD to boot (or a boot menu manager), set a VHD virtual drive, etc...

Dell HDD to DIY PC

So my mothers dell computer is just slow, she's getting old and I'm sure it drives her insane having to wait for a program to start up, just as much as I dread having to work on the thing. The IDE HDD is fine, so I have this Atom system but will only allow for a SATA drive which I have already installed. What I would like to do is migrate (clone) the Dell HDD to this new drive. However, I've came across some issues the last time I cloned that drive... it would not boot and comes up with the Blue bar at the top or bottom of the screen IIRC, the problem occurs both on the Atom system and the VMware test bed I created. I've used Acronis to clone the drive and the additional tools to allow for new hardware, but still unable to boot the drive.
Does anyone know of a way to bypass or trick the cloned SATA HDD on the Atom system to believe it's on a Dell system? Is it likely all I need to do is copy the MBR from the Retail XP CD I have?
