  1. one of my clients uses a flat dns domain name. DNS is sufficient
  2. I dont see how this forces you to use WINS instead of DNS. Even if you have a flat dns domain name your nodes can still be identified as computername.flatdnsname advantage of dns is that you can use dns forwarders etc to configure your multiple sites. WINS is a thing of the past... soon... hopefully
  3. it seems you already know what you need.. a wins proxy, which works pretty much like a DHCP relay server and will relay (not forward) WINS traffic across non-boradcast and broadcast subnets http://www.serverwatch.com/tutorials/article.php/2193041 Some info there Why in this day and age are you using WINS though?
  4. well the first thing to do is uninstall office from one of your problem machines and re-install it from CD, correctly and see if this solves your problem
  5. john.brown@domain.local is the correct syntax when logging on using the... I forgot what its called when you use the username in that syntax now. The whole point of using this syntax is so that when you have a multiple domain environment the users always attempt login to the correct domain. Therefore the domain must be specified in the UNC (the username) If your domain is called microsoft.com then you must logon as user@microsoft.com and not just user unless the pre-2000 username is "user"
  6. if the guest (username) area of the pop-up box is greyed out then no, he is not in a domain environment enable guest accounts on both boxes and set them both to blank passwords but please realise how insecure this is and how likely you are going to get virused via unc shares
  7. cant think of anything off the top of my head but please keep up posted with anything you find!
  8. chances are you wrote this CD from somewhere and somewhere along the line either during an iso conversion or a CD writing excersize some files were named incorectly (long filename conversions etc)
  9. the domain name is flat... just "orr" I know this is not the problem because the command works perfectly if there is only one result. As soon as there are more than one result I run into this problem i.e dsquery computer -stalepwd xx | dsmove xx (fails with unknown paramater) but when I specify a limit of one result dsquery computer -stalepwd xx -limit 1 | dsmove xx (command works perfectly) as soon as I change the limit to more than 1 I receive the unknown paramater error again and the error is always against the second result
  10. can anyone see what I have done wrong in the below? dsquery computer -scope onelevel "ou=standard workstations,ou=workstations,ou=01 computers,dc=orr" -stalepwd 150 -limit 0 | dsmove -newparent "ou=tombstone computer accounts,ou=05 maintenance,dc=o rr" dsmove failed:`CN=HELPDESK,OU=Standard Workstations,OU=Workstations,OU=01 Computers,DC=orr' is an unknown parameter. type dsmove /? for help. If I do a dsquery -computer name helpdesk | dsmove -newparent "ou= etc etc" then it works fine...??
  11. I have made a Win PE image from Server 2003 Ent and am using a Server 2003 SP1 RIS server to hand out the image. The image boots fine and it takes me into the GUI but at the starting network stage it comes up with a red cross and a I get a popup dialog asking me if I wish to reboot. Cancelling this takes me into the command prompt where I still have access to the RIS share I booted from but cannot map drives or obtain any IP configuration. I presume RIS has locked the NIC and PE cannot detect it I am using an Intel Pro 1GB LAN card Is there a work around to this problem?
  12. Im trying to boot Winpe2005 from RIS, I followed the instructions on the MS site and am running into a problem when starting I'm having the exact same problem with three different NIC's. Intel Pro 1000, Yukon 1000 and a broadcom 1000 - it just stops after the loading white line thingy reaches the right hand side (finishes loading) before it enters the GUI - just sits there. Any ideas?
  13. I am trying to find a 108mbit mimo compatible mini-pci adapter for my Asus V6V laptop/notebook but not having much luck. I have never seen a mini-pci adapter on a manufacturers website's product page so where would I find info about the cards they are making etc. Does anyone have any info on how I might go about tracking one down, my laptop has the standard intel 54mbit card, the other machines in my house use netgear mimo PCI cards and are substatially quicker when it comes to copying files around etc am I right in thinking that if I find such a card I can just open up the laptop and swap the cards around?
  14. you're forgetting marketing and sponsorships - don't forget how many sports etc gain from sponsorship deals from large corporations, be it a tax right off or not....

    xp slow

at what stage? before you see the XP splash screen? after you see it? is there anything on the screen? try be a bit more pro-active when asking for assistance... is this a new install? did you install anything? change a jumper on a drive, install a new drive?
  16. ok I've given it a read - from what I understand you have to have quick switching enabled, so this will not work in a domain environment as adding to a domain disables quick switching
  17. would someone please explain this to me a bit more What is it that you are trying to acheive and what is it exactly that this file allows you to do, it sounds very interesting but I'm not sure exactly what it is you are talking about Logging into a console sessions without locking the user out or something?
  18. I am guessing here but its an educated guess A pxe client broadcasts for two things, an ip address and a bootp server. If ris and dhcp are the same server it replies back with all of this required information. If not it replies with an IP address for client and supplies an IP address (or hostname) and bootp filename for the bootp srever. The client then downloads this "boot image" which I am presuming is startrom.com, this boot image is specific to MS RIS - other vendors/configurations would issue other images. I beleive the boot image also contains the client installation screens and the BINL which allows the client installation screens to contact AD. Once this stage is complete and you have selected an image to boot from the installation and windows files you mentioned above performs their usual jobs, I doubt that in a RIS configuration they perform a different job to that of what they normally do - simply googl'ing each file seperately should give you sufficient information There is LOADS of information on winnt.sif in the unnatended installation area of these forums and the unnatended MSFN website.
  19. ok, I've also figured that bit out now but have another problem. the "please wait" black screen with the progress bar at the bottom reaches the end but it doesnt proceed any further - it doesnt get into the GUI just sits at this stage... Any ideas?
  20. Ok, I have obtained PE 2005 now so I will have access to the factory and netsetup files required to overcome this issue. Now that I have PE however I thought I would give it a quick go. I am now using a different laptop to the one I was using before, a new one. When I try boot PE from RIS it tells me that the image I am using does not support my network card. Could someone point me in the direction of some info on how to add NIC drivers to PE images please Stuart
  21. make sure your PE image is the last alphabetically in your RIS images folder
  22. thanks for your post, I am some of the way but I have run into that networking issue you mentioned. RIS has locked the NIC and WinPE/BartPE cannot detect the card. I need to work around this, adding additional NIC's is not an option as I want to role this out as an enterprise solution to imaging/thin client/ERD tools
