  1. *steps up on soapbox* Personally, I think the XP UI looks like a f**king clown car. Who thought that purple, orange, blue, red, and green was a good color scheme? Hell, while they were at it, they should have thrown in some fuschia. It sure couldn't make it uglier. And what's up with the ridiculously large window close, minimize, and maximize controls? *steps down*
  2. Here's another icon restore utility. It's called "Desktop Icon Position Saver" or DIPS for short. It allows you to save and restore your desktop icon positions. I believe it can also be run from the command line or in a batch file to automate saving and/or restoring icon positions. It's kinda old but it's really tiny and it works well. http://3feetunder.com/files/dips.zip BTW, FixitMad, in your link to "Icon Restore" you fixed the URL in the text that displays but you never fixed the actual hyperlink itself. It still points to the URL without the final 'L' and gives an error page.
  3. Can somebody tell me exactly what the service pack changes to solve the Win 9x 512M+ memory problem? Is the solution different on various flavors of windows? I'd like to have an installable patch that works on all 9x versions of windows that I can give out to my customers to fix this specific problem. Gape?
  4. For your modem, I'm fairly certain you can use the generic Conexant HCF drivers available here... http://www.conexant.com/support/md_driverassistance.html Click "Agree" and then scroll down. If these won't work, yank the modem and search it for model numbers. Someone here can probably figure out who made it and where to get drivers.
  5. When the 2.0 service pack goes final, will there be documentation that spells out exactly what each of the fixes are and what they do? I'd like to know exactly what is being changed in case I have problems and need to troubleshoot and fix something.
  6. Nevermind, I find a solution on this page... http://www.updatexp.com/0x800A138F.html
  7. I'm getting a windows update error after installing 1.6.2 that isn't fixed by the solution above... Windows Update Error Windows Update has encountered an error. This may be due to a discrepancy in your computer's time setting. To check your date and time setting: On the taskbar, double-click the time. Verify that the date and time is correct. You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows Update. Send error number to Microsoft (0x800C0008) Note This sends error information but does not create a support incident; you may or may not receive a response.
  8. Try UltraEdit. It has a "Column Mode"... http://www.ultraedit.com/ I've been using it every day for about 5 years Incidentaly, the other program [not an editor] that I use every day and find indispensable is Beyond Compare... http://www.scootersoftware.com/
  9. I also think you should keep the Notepad from 1.x
  10. Doesn't your service pack include the WinME version of Defrag? If not, my bad. Here's a site with descriptions of the Defrag fix and other enhancements to 98SE using stuff found in other OS versions or service packs... http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm Regardless, you should include the "DOS prompt here" powertoy. It's similar to the "Open Command Window Here" right click option in XP. Very, very useful.
  11. You should add the "DOS prompt here" powertoy... http://www.3feetunder.com/files/doshere.zip ...and Spider Solitaire (from windows ME)... http://www.3feetunder.com/files/winme_spider_setup.exe I install these on every Windows 98 SE system I build or update for friends.
