Can I still do this if I want to script to run on the actual domain controller? (Sorry, not very familiar with windows policies yet...)

Howdy everyone.. long time, no post. Listen, Ive got an issue with this program that I need to have run upon server startup. The problem is, it bombs out when I try creating a service that points to this program, but works without a hitch when I start it at the command prompt. Any suggestions on how I can ensure this program starts up upon every reboot, without using services? Thanks in advance!!

Its definately not my antivirus and while I dont have a spare Sound Card to test with, I did pull the existing and let my pc boot up and restart a couple times without the issue happening at all. This problem is becoming extremely annoying and any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!

You should read though this thread when you get a chance, cause Im sure this has already been mentioned. But this is def what you want... http://johnhaller.com/jh/mozilla/portable_firefox/

FileZilla is what you need... and its a great free ftp client to boot. http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ If memory serves me right, you need to make sure you make some special selections during installation, like to store the data in an xml file rather than the registry or something if you want it to be stand alone.

So since my last reformat, Ive been experiencing a pretty annoying issue. Every time I goto reboot my PC, it takes about 30-60 seconds before it will shut down Windows. During the time which I choose to reboot and when it actually reboots I cant much else (such as run a program or open properties of a file, etc) as I recieve the error: The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down Im pretty sure Ive tracked the cause of issue down to my sound card drivers because when I uninstall them my PC reboot as it should. Im using a Soundblaster Audigy and Ive downloaded and uninstalled / re-installed the driver a good 5 times now and still have the same results. Any one have a clue as to why this would suddenly be occuring and better yet, how the heck I can fix it?? Thanks a ton in advance!

Ive got this annoying issue where my mapped drives dont automatically connect when I reboot my pc. If I open My Computer, under the 'type' column of all of my network drives it says 'Disconnected Network Drive'. The weird thing is, as soon as I double click on any one of them they connect and the mapped drive opens up without issue. From this point forward (until the next restart), the Type reads 'Network Drive' for any one I manually open 1st. The problem with this is I have a Home Theatre PC (HTPC) which accesses media files via mapped drives using HTPC software, and the software doesnt see these files until I manually open My Comp / Explorer and open each of these mapped drives one by one. Anyone know what would be causing this and how to fix / get around it? Thanks as always!!

FIX for Norton Antivirus 2005 Reg. & Activation
durex replied to jbright's topic in Application Installs
Ive installed using this method, perhaps a good 10 times using a real pc and vmware and never had this problem. I can tell you that the 1st and only time I ever used virtualpc i had this exact same issue... which is why i made the move to vmware. id try booting into safe mode, uninstalling nav and see if really is the issue. furthermore, id also try giving vmware a shot to see if you experience the same issues. as far as i understand it, this process goes for the major norton products... including NIS "C:\install\NAVSETUP.exe" /qn /noreboot REBOOT=ReallySuppress .. is all you need to use. -
Highly recommend VMWare over VirualPC... way easy to setup and eats up FAR less resources. Youo can download a 45 day eval version here

Is there a registry tweak to enable file sharing?
durex replied to Sgt_Strider's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I had this exact same problem and tracked it down to NetBIOS being disabled after my UA install ran.. and it need to be set to either 'Default' or 'Enabled' (I use Default).... you can read up here how to make this occur by default during your UA install. -
Well, I just re-formatted my host pc without using the RyanVM pack and didnt include kb885250 in the hotfixes applied. tested from other pcs on my network and same problem. saw jdoggs post, uninstalled kb885250 on one of the Remote pcs and sure enough....................... success!!!!! Holy christ. I think after all of this, we may have stumbled upon the actual solution here!! Everyone who has been experiencing this issue.. Goto Add/Remove Programs, check off the 'Show Updates' box and look for Windows XP Hotfix - KB885250 and Remove it. It'll probably bark about how some things may not work, click ok and reboot once its complete. Perform this on every 'Remote' PC which had issues trying to access your shares and post back your results. NOTE: You may want to take a System Restore snapshot prior to removing this update. I didnt and Ive yet to see any repurcussions (sp?), but MS usually puts critical updates out there for a reason. I truly hope that this solution works for everyone else experiencing this EXTREMELY annoying problem and want to again thank EVERYONE who contributed info to this thread. You guys rock!

This has been covered numerous times throughout this thread... its not a permissions issue. ... and Pat, Im not sure what youre asking there.

You would have to check with Ryan on this. However, my best guess is that you can't. My understanding of Ryan's update packs is that they don't install the hotfixes. Rather, the fixes are actually integrated into the source files on the CD. This, I believe, would make uninstalling them impossible. Do a check in your Add/Remove Programs with the checkbox for Show Updates checked. Any updates installed via Ryan's pack will not be listed. Any that have been installed since the OS was installed with Ryan's pack will be. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Holy christ... I found this solution (removing that kb hotfix) as one of my 1st searches, before even starting this thread! but because I didnt see it under my add/remove progs I figured it didnt apply to me (I almost even referenced it in my 1st post, but again, didnt think it applied to this situation) I use the RyanVM pack and just didnt even put 2 and 2 together to think that the hotfixes integrated from his pack wouldnt show up there. dammit! So someone clear this up for me... if I used the RyanVM pack is there a hotfix that needs to be removed or since he didnt actually include the kb885250 hotfix, my problem something entirely different. Thanks... and hopefully we're making some headway on this.

But heres the thing... most of the networks you europeans use... morpheus, grokster, some of the most popular torrents.... theyre all operated by U.S companies.... which means theyll be shut down and you guys lose too.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4627679.stm Proving once again how wacked our justice system is. This is like saying we should throw all of the gun makers in jail because some people use them to kill people. Or that all manufacturers of VCR's, CD/DVD burners, TIVO's should be tossed away cause ppl can potentially use it for making illegal copies. This is a MAJOR blow to p2p networks and it'd be safe to say they will never be the same after the next few months. Its going to be simply amazing to see how movie, record, software companies twist and turn this into giving them much more control over media, that this initial decission didnt intend on. This just blows me away.

Okay.. I know how to add the icons My Computer, My Network and Internet Explorer on Windows XP, but it doesnt appear as though windows 2003 uses the same registry key... at least it doesnt the 1st couple parent hives. When I did a regshot of before and after enabling and disabling these desktop shorcuts I found that these keys appear to be located under HKU\[Random Hive Name]\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\... instead of "HKCU\..." like it is in Windows XP. Anyone know how to add these shortcuts using some type of script for windows 2003? Thanks in advance!

Actually ended up going with Mobile Net Switch (http://www.mobilenetswitch.com/). Pretty awesome little program, and the only limitation the shareware version has is a nag screen.. otherwise with works with 100% functionality. Thanks for the replies everyone!

Trying to figure on an easy way to change IE's Internet security setting from High to Medium and then back to High again via some type of script (batch, reg, vbscript, etc). I did a RegShot before and after changing the setting and it seems as though there are a ton of RegEntries which are modified. In addition to that, at least with my tests, the reg entries which seem to get modified are located under "HKU\[Random Hive Name]\...". I need this script to work on various PC's, preferably with both Windows 2000 and 2003, but mostly for Win2003. I did search around for '+"Internet Explorer" +security' and didnt come up with anything definitive... so apologies if I happend to miss a topic where this has already been discussed! Thanks in advance!

Right, thats what I was referring to when I previously mentioned using the following command in your winnt.sif file... FileSystem = ConvertNTFS ... does a quick format.
