  1. Are you trying to burn an iso from DOS? Or trying to burn an ISO of DOS 3.0? Can you clarify that.

    Anyway here's my thoughts:

    1

You could get the floppy drive installed and working, you might even get the floppy disk to load whatever version of DOS is on it, but it probably won't do anything more than load into memory. If you type "Dir c:" and it returns an error, then obviously it won't read a NTFS drive. The drive has to be formatted first to FAT32.

Getting your plain DOS 3.0 floppies to run on anything newer than a 1995-era computer will take work. (The last real version of DOS, meaning it wasn't buried underneath Windows 9x, was version 6.22. And it had limits as far as hard disk size, partitions, and the amount of RAM it could handle. Newer hardware is simply too big.)

You can look up the exact data on the net because I'm not sure. I would Google "Dos Ram limit" or "Dos hard disk limit." Something to that effect.

As far as your alternative. Anytime you try and mix different versions of DOS, it will give you an error stating "incorrect version of Format.com," or whatever program you try to swap.

For example, you cannot take the "command" or "fdisk" from DOS 3.0 and expect them to work with system files from DOS 6. It will give you an "incorrect version" error. They're not inter-changeable like that.

I'd like to help. Could you be more specific exactly what you want to do...

  2. I'm using version 1.75

The files I drag onto the playlist are there every time I re-open the program. There's just no option for saving it as a m3u file, but I don't mind.

Before Mozart informed me, I wasn't aware that 1 by 1 could make a playlist at all, so I'm happier with it now.

1 by 1 and Trout are exactly the simple, efficient type of MP3 players I was looking for.

  3. Well, I'll be darned. You're right, it does have a playlist. :)

I hit the "toggle playlist" button on the top. And then I dragged some files onto it. But when I highlighted them and tried right-clicking there was no option for saving/creating any playlist. :(

I didn't see any options for saving a .m3u file....... but, at least when I closed the program and re-opened it, my files that I dragged onto the playlist, they were STILL in order. So that's pretty cool. Since I keep all my MP3 files in one huge directory, I can then just drag and drop files to the top and change my "playlist" whenever I want.

So thank you, this is pretty much what I was looking for, it's really sweet now. Now it feels like Neutrius, playlist wise I mean, nice and simple.

By the way, I don't know if you are, but are you using 1 by 1 with Kernel-Ex? That might explain why you're capable of saving an .m3u list.

I looked but that option was nowhere to be found.

I tried Winamp before, but I didn't really like it. I'll give those other programs a shot though, never heard of them.

  4. I'm trying to find a really good MP3 player. So I was wondering what you guys use.

Here are the programs I've tried, and the pros and cons:

    1 by 1 Directory Player --- http://mpesch3.de1.cc/1by1.html

Pros: Simplicity, very small memory overhang, quick. You don't have to fiddle with playlists or anything. Most importantly it can handle every kind of MP3 I throw at it.

Cons: No playlists, tacky looking, not many features.

    BS MP3 -- http://sites.google.com/site/bsprograms/the-programs/bs-mp3

Pros: small, doesn't need any installation, low memory usage. Very basic.

Cons: I don't think it can handle every type of MP3. I'm not sure it supports "variable bit rate" encoded files. No playlist ability.

    VU Player --- http://www.vuplayer.com/vuplayer.php

Pros: nice interface, intuitive, more features than the above programs. More versatile. Seems to work with all my MP3 files. You can make playlists!

Cons: Uses more memory than the other programs.

    Neutrius -- http://www.softpedia.com/progScreenshots/Neutrius-mp3-player-Screenshot-8450.html

Pros: uses very little memory, nice clean layout, "cool looking," has the ability to make a playlist and use skins. Overall pretty good.

Cons: biggest drawback is that it doesn't handle all MP3s. It's from 2006 and is no longer developed, which is a shame. Specifically, I don't think it handles "variable bit rate," or perhaps files with over 256 bit rate without an error.

What I used to do is convert the "problem" file to a .wav using CDex, then convert back to a normal bit rate (128-256) mp3.

... overall, I like the feel of Neutrius the best, but 1 by 1 is easily the most convenient and it's up-to-date.

How about you guys? What other programs are out there?

    ==================================================================

As a side note, the best MP3 downloading website I've come across is MP3Skull

    http://mp3skull.com/

You can find almost anything on it. Plus, it's one of the few places that works with javascript disabled.

Oh yeah, if you like classical music, check out:

    ^ tons of free music

  5. Yeah, Imagine is a pretty sweet program that I just disovered not long ago. Definitely a VERY fast picture viewer. The speed is really noticeable on older hardware especially. I hope that guy keeps developing it, working out all the bugs and stuff. Kinda glitchy on my computer. But I think it is the fastest program I've tried, compared to XnView, CompuPic Pro, and the like.

  6. ^ the HFS file server looks pretty cool, thanks for sharing.

  9. Well, I would have to unscrew it to find out. Can I get back to you on that when I find my screwdriver, somewhere around here? Because I don't know off the top of my head what model the modem is. All I know is that the last time I checked for the drivers, I found a "generic" WinLucent driver for Win2000. But after downloading the file and running it, it would always come up with an error. That's what I meant by not being able to find one that works.

Sorry, I don't mean to sound like a lazy butt (can't find my screwdriver and all), it's just that, I don't even have the Windows 2000 Pro cd anymore. So it's not like I can try and fix it now anyway. :(

  10. Thanks for all your input Technoid, and everyone else too, but I'm probably just going to let it be.

I'm unemployed and I dont' have any extra money right now. I need to find a job before I start more projects. Otherwise, I definitely would have bought tha t HP 7845 that was on ebay.

As far as my original problem concerning upgrading the RAM to 512, I'm pretty sure it's a flaw in the motherboard. 384 is probably the actual maximum amount without fixing the motherboard. And it's probably ten years beyond the warranty to do that. Besides, for Windows ME purposes I find my computer is adequate.

I read through those links you provided, and it seems that not only does this computer have problems getting Windows Me to recognize the Ram, it also presents different problems for Windows XP. Which is another ball of wax entirely.

I already tried installing Windows 2000 Professional on this thing, using FAT32 of course. I noticed that Windows 2000 performed faster, but the only (major )problems were that it didn't recognize my modem, nor could I find that drivers for it. Also, it didn't recognize my integrated grahpics chip. I did find the driver for the graphics, but after tons of seraching at the school computer I never found a working driver for the modem. Whereas, with Windows ME, everything works out of the box. Just reformat, install, and it's done and everything works. It's just a lot easier. Like HP says on it's webpage, this computer is designed soley to be used with Windows ME and they DON'T recommend Windows XP or 2000 operating systems. And I can see why after attempting it.

Again, thanks. I appreciate your guys' help.
