My wacky prediction:
Windows 98 and ME will survive the next coming decades, as they'll be the preferred OS of choice for "Desktop PC" hobbyists.
Windows XP and newer, due to their complexity and probable crippling from Microsoft Activation, won't be as much "fun" to toy around on. (Basically I think desktop PC's will be gone in 15 years or so).
Everyone else will have abandoned these archaic things long before then, in favor of the latest gizmo that fits in your pocket.
So, in my view, Windows 98 and ME will achieve immortality and appreciation from computer hobbyists who enjoy big bulky boxes that take up lots of space. It's kinda like muscle cars from the late 60's and early 70's. I mean, who is going to give a darn about the 2008 Dodge Charger or whatever. But the 1970 Charger, that's another story. Back when you didn't have to be an astronaut to fix your own car.
Of course, I could just be blowing smoking up everyone's.... ahem.

Hmm... I wonder what model Pavilion you had, do you remember? Because mine has a sticker on the front that says "Designed for Windows ME + Windows 2000 Professional." I've seen people put XP on these computers... so it's not like it can't be done.
Maybe we had the same computer. Hehe.
Im tired of the new OS's and how they suck. Windows vista and 7 especially.For me, it's not so much that the OS's suck, but rather: The software sucks pretty bad, and the user interface is crap.
The software sucks because it's deeply integrated into the computer and everything is "internet-ready." Meaning, they have way too much access to your computer just for some simple crap like managing photos, ripping CD's, anti-virus programs, and whatnot. Does everything always have to be connected online? I really think it's excessive and an invasion of privacy.
And the user interfaces just look stupid to me. I prefer the Windows ME interface the most.

Who knows...
I've never bothered with windows update myself though. If you're running windows 98/Me you already have a measure of "security through obscurity." I don't know what good any updates would do for windows 98, hate to say it.

Mikko Hypponen from Finnish security firm F-Secure said that it was still providing updates for Windows 98 users who run its anti-virus package."In fact, 98 users are not at that great a risk as people might think: most of the new malware we see simply won't run there," he said.
Yes, Dells suck. I had two Dells. One of them I threw into a swamp in the woods, the other one I gave away.
The computer I have right now is an eleven year old HP Pavilion 7845, which was designed for exclusively for running Windows Me. I've had ZERO problems with it.
I tried fiddling around with a Dell, in my case it was nearly impossible to find a stupid modem that worked on that worthless piece of junk. Plus the fact I had windows 2000 probably didn't help. Seems to have been a terrible OS for 56k modems and overall bad driver support. But yeah.
One of those Dells was an Optiplex Gx260, which I attempted to "downgrade" to Windows Me and 2000 from XP. It was a nightmare, I eventually did get the graphics drivers to work, aftering trying several strategies, and I got the sound to work, but I never was able to find a modem for it. So I gave up. And I decided I wasn't ever going to waste that much money again.... seeing as how, by the time I was done screwing with it, I could've bought a cheap new computer from BestBuy or WallMart for the same price.
If I want to indulge my Windows Me hobbies, then I always check the specifications at the manufacturer's website, and if it says the exact OS the computer was designed to run (like Windows 98/me), then I'll go ahead. But If it doesn't say, then I don't bother with it. Because I want to know exactly before I spend money on it, then I'll just go and get the appropriate version of Windows off Ebay. At this point I have a collection of Windows CD that I bought off ebay including several Windows ME discs, windows 98, I have the windows 95 floppy disks, and DOS and windows 3.1. And Windows 2000. That way, if I'm messing around with old computers, I'll be able to install the right OS. Sorry, I know that probably won't help you though.

Just read Ecclesiastes. It has all the answers you seek in life.
Here's a few pearls of wisdom:
Ecclesiastes 1
Everything Is Meaningless
1 The words of the Teacher,[a] son of David, king in Jerusalem:
2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”
3 What do people gain from all their labors
at which they toil under the sun?
4 Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains forever.
5 The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.
6 The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.
7 All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.
8 All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
9 What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which one can say,
“Look! This is something new”?
It was here already, long ago;
it was here before our time.
11 No one remembers the former generations,
and even those yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who follow them.
Wisdom Is Meaningless
12 I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind! 14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
15 What is crooked cannot be straightened;
what is lacking cannot be counted.
16 I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.
18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow;
the more knowledge, the more grief.

Who else thinks that we're headed for a Great Depression... or at least Japan-style stagnation? Anyone?
just look at all the trends, they're all pointing down despite whatever flash-in-the-pan gains are made on Wall Street. I think all that stuff is B.S. anyway.
So a couple of fortune 500 companies stock goes up, what does that say? Did they create more jobs in Singapore? More telemarketer jobs in India?
I don't understand how the status of a multinational corporation, which half the time doesn't pay taxes thanks to all the loopholes, is a reflection on the real economy. Main street doesn't have anything to do with Wall Street.
Plus the "unemployment" stats are nothing but lies. They don't even count the people who gave up looking for work, like me.
Anybody need to hire a hit man? LOL.

Basically if I understand correctly then, it's a Windows 98 issue and your computer works fine otherwise, right?
I don't know... maybe I'd try installing another graphic card and see what that does. Assuming you're BIOS allows you to do that, because you'd have to change the settings to use something different than the integrated graphics chip I think.
So if you have any spare (older) graphics cards laying around, maybe give them a try.

No problem.
and it tells me that there is something conflicting with it.Did it say exactly what?
Another suggestion, and I'm grasping at straws here, you might check to see if the motherboard / BIOS has any upgrades available that correct that. But I'd be cautious of doing that unless you're 100% certain.
Good luck.

According to Wikipedia a MTP driver for W98 could be found in the MS MTP Porting Kit.
Is there like a simple download for that?
There was a thread with a short list and some useful information on this a while back: SDHC Micro SDHC card readers for Windows 98. The list is out of date now, but there is currently no shortage of card readers with official Windows 98SE/ME support. Kingston, Belkin, Vantec, or Rosewill, to name a few, have a number of models with compatible drivers. It gets even better. With NUSB, practically all readers are compatible.Cool, thanks. Where can I find NUSB?

Is this not a non-issue since (I assume) all cameras are using one or another model of flash cards which can be read with any semi-decent flash card reader?
Possibly. But maybe not.
The limit my cameras use is a 2gb memory chip. Bigger chips won't work on "older" cameras from only 4-5 years ago. At the very least, I think they're phasing out the older 1 and 2GB chips (do they sell those anymore?)... which will have the effect of phasing out the old cameras that require them.
As far as flash readers... I don't know... do they have any for Win9x? I don't have one.
Because MS (and Apple are even worse) don't like you having such flexibility (too dangerous, users must be protected from themselves, blah blah), so now more and more cameras are using MTP/PTP instead.Didn't know that. But then again, I'm behind the times.
You know, a list of compatible flash readers would probably be good to list as well.
Might as well start stocking up on old peripherals before they're gone for good. I might grab me one of those HP Scanjets.
*Edit*
I looked on Amazon and they still sell the smaller chips. It's just that whenever I go to Walmart or Bestbuy I never see those.
