Hi pulteny, This is the same Lipper as ClamWin forums. I posted there re: Spybot TeaTimer. Navigate to https://www.virustotal.com. Click Choose File and point to file w9xpopen.exe on your memory stick. Click Scan it! and wait for the results. Cheers, Lipper

KernelEx Apps Compatibility List (New)
Lipper replied to xrayer's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Thanks for the tip! -
Yes, I can confirm that too. I just downloaded PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.197 portable and it works (opens PDFs) in KEx 4.5.1 Default Compatibility mode. Have either of you tried printing a doc? I seem to remember that was an issue in previous versions of PDF and KEx, and I don't have a printer to test with. I can't print. I' ve tested it on two machines. Thanks for the info.

KernelEx Apps Compatibility List (New)

FileHippo.com Update Checker (standalone or installed version) - choose Disable KernelEx extensions to make it work. Requires NetFramework 2.0. Strange, huh? -
Thanks for your input, Prozactive. I believe the Avast self-defense module wasn't implemented until v. 5x. Still, 4.8 likely has some sort of self-protection, and you have given me some good ideas should I encounter a problem replacing the vps file. Thanks also for the DB download link, I had forgotten about that. I can likely use my download manager (FDM) to painlessly acquire the latest DB instead of using the Avast interface. I think I'm good to go.
-
I will likely be reinstalling '98 in the next few weeks. The only problem I'm anticipating is having to download the huge Avast virus database again. It appears that C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\400.vps contains the virus database. Would I be able to save and then replace this file in a fresh Windows and Avast install? Any other thoughts? Win98 4.10.1998 upgraded to 4.10.2222, 400 Mhz, 224 MB RAM.

Thanks, Aru. I've replaced the DLL in both ClamWin installed and portable. Updates and scans are normal.
-
Thanks, but don't you mean Firefox 3.6.18? or has there been an update recently to 19? In case you haven't found it yet, Firefox 3.6.19 has been out a couple weeks. It appears to be the last in the 3.6 series. http://www.filehippo.com/download_firefox/10195

I replaced the dll in the installed and portable versions. A couple quick scans with both revealed no immediate problem. Many thanks, Aru.

Editing a post doesn't bump a thread on this forum, so I'm manually bumping that others will know there's new content.

Though it's days are surely numbered, Avast AV 4.8.1368 still works on 98/ME and receives updates several times per day. http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/6635/

ClamWin AV .97.1 has been released. It's not noted in the change log but this update has added QRecover support for Win98 and WinME. QRecover (a ClamWin utility aka Quarantine Browser) allows users to easily restore files from quarantine, if necessary. http://www.filehippo.com/download_clamwin This new version works great with Clam Sentinel 1.16, which acts as it's integrated real time front end. Edit: adding ClamWin Portable .97.1 (states for Win2k and higher, but works on Win98 and probably WinME without KernelEx). Can be used in conjunction with Clam Sentinel from a flash drive. See the two guides at the bottom of http://clamsentinel.sourceforge.net for setup procedures. Also, I could never get ClamWin (installed or portable) to scan a NTFS volume even with Paragon's NTFS for Win98 installed. My remedy was to re-format the NTFS drive to FAT32. This is a ClamWin problem, not Clam Sentinel.
-
There's a new version of Clam Sentinel: v1.16 May 28, 2011. You must have ClamWin AV (installed or portable) to use. http://clamsentinel.sourceforge.net
-
Thanks, Aru. I've updated both versions of ClamWin.
-
I don't know for sure, but I installed over 4.5, rebooted as prompted and it seems to be working OK. Glad it's still working, still be interested to know the correct method though. Both methods are correct Thank you for confirming.

Thanks, all. I didn't know of many of these programs and tips. Some programs I use that haven't been mentioned yet: Clam Sentinel 1.15 by member 'Aru'. Real time front end for ClamWin AV with additional configurable system monitor (heuristic). I'm running a portable pre-release version 1.16 which is expected to be released this month. Multi Virus Cleaner 2011 Last version : v11.3.1 - March 29th, 2011 - scanner, updated every 1-2 months, installed. SmartCOP Virus Scanner - updated frequently, portable, disposable, requires name and email for registration. RootAlyzer - Portable rootkit scanner by Safer - also incorporated into Spybot Search & Destroy. All programs are free for personal use and compatible with Win98/ME without KernelEx.
