  1. to Multibooter: I am afraid you got me wrong; I am using Win982ME with KernelEx and Firefox 3.5.13 and my only problem was this annoying message that popped up every time when launching Firefox. But thanks for reminding me of Thunderbird, I neved used that, will give it a try to Tihiy: you are a real wizard... Cannot imagine where you pulled that trick from but it worked! THANKS A LOT !
  2. Does anybody know how to make Firefox 3.5.13 and later versions the default browser for win98 ? I have Internet Explorer 5 (bundled to Win98) installed and whatever I try, when I launch Firefox I get the "Firefox is not your default browser..." greeting. I tried this fix by MDGX. This did not solve the issue. In fact, this registry key did not exist on my system at all, I had to add it manually. Maybe additional registry tweaking is necessary ...? http://www.mdgx.com/newtip4.htm#DEFBROW1 Thanks for all help!
  3. You can follow the instructions on MDGx's page to install JRE 1.6.07 (last official version for w9x) OR try to install a more recent version (preferably in combination with KernelEx so that you can use an up-to-date browser). Remember though, JRE 1.6.10 and later versions are set to use the next-gen Java plugin by default, so you will need to untick this setting in Java Control Panel in order to bring the classic Java plugin back.
  4. Well, you have got quite a few suggestions so far. Still, if you are not satisfied with free or cheap commercial solutions, nor in the mood for the "typing, diving, going in again" wizardry presented above might give a try to: Your Uninstaller! 2010: http://www.ursoftware.com/ (MIGHT need KernelEx) There is another one, Ashampoo, which works quite thouroughly; the price is that this is achieved by making registry snapshots before each program installation, and instead of a simple Windows uninstall, the registry state is restored to the snapshot when you want to get rid of the proggie. Resident and bulky but no traces in the registry at least.
  5. AFAIK there is no such driver. I was also looking for for it for a couple of days, then gave up. (I had an ATI 1950 Pro and was thinking about an upgrade to HD3850 Pro, the fastest AGP card from ATI) It is the same situation for modern PCIE ATI cards like your 4870. You cannot get any of them work under Win9x.
  6. That solution (renaming plugin directory) worked. Thanks again!
  7. Thanks rainyd, how did you set/configure Java 6 update 21 for Firefox? I am asking because I only get two or more (empty) console windows popping up whenever Java 1.6.x plugin is started from Firefox...
  8. Hello, does anybody know what are the latest versions of these software that (are supposed to) work together? From what I learned, Firefox 3.6.x and later versions can only use the next-gen Java plugin, which seems to be impossible to properly install on win9x - or is there a way...??? The best combination I have found so far is: Firefox 3.5.12 + Java runtime environment 1.5.0_22 (+ KernelEx 4.5 RC1) Also, what is your experience with the Firefox 4.0 betas? All tips, tricks appreciated.
  9. I tried reinstalling the patch, too. Tried reducing system RAM as well. Also tried crossing 77.xx and and 8x.xx driver files, especially nvcore.vxd. Wont work. And I have a recollection that once I worked on a computer with Intel P4 chipset (dont know exactly which) and that could handle an 512 MB Geforce 7800 - with the overlay issue described on other threads. All in all, it comes down to the chipset and its driver, how it can manage memory for system components. This one in particular is a no-go. Thanks for all the answers and suggestions. J.
  10. ... I got the card yesterday. Unfortunately, I could not get it to work under win9x. Tried to disable virtually everything in BIOS (USB ports, LAN, other ports etc.), reducing AGP aperture and limiting vcache in order to free as much system arena space as possible. Also tried 512, 768 MB and 1 GB system RAM configurations without success. It seems that the nforce 3 250gb chipset implementation + 82.xx nvidia grapics card drivers cannot handle 512 MB video RAM. (Other than that, the card works perfectly under XP, with minimal noise and average heat.) As I dont want to switch to an Intel platform in order to use the card with Win98SE, I will re-sell the card and buy a 256 MB 7900GS. J.
  11. If reinstalling win9x is not an option, try to restore it to a vanilla install state (or as close as possible). You can use the inbuilt system file checker utility to determine version numbers etc... There is a fat chance, however, that you can replace certain files in native DOS mode only or booting from another OS/drive on your computer. Also, you might have some luck with manually restoring the system registry state to a backup which dates before you installed the service pack. This must also be done by booting to dos and, if my memory serves, using the SCANREG /restore "nameofbackup" command. No quotes. Another stab in the dark: reinstall DirectX. Many times when sound plays OK thru plain wave output but not DX hardware acceleration, this is the culprit. Good luck, J.
  12. Good idea, I concluded the same, just thought that ME is your only option for some reason. As you can see, Win98 FE and SE are far more popular than ME. Must be for a reason... What is it one can do under ME but cannot with 98? Nothing that would really matter. ME has the same limitations as 98, just denies you using your hardware with non wdm drivers and blocks real mode DOS. Not a bit more stable or up-to-date than 98.
  13. Try determining if there are other conflicts in your system as well. Even if everything seems OK with the drivers (no yellow excl. marks) there is a chance that Windows allocated overlapping resources to two or more of your hardware units. Windows thinks its okay to do so but it really should not. One way to investigate the issue is to disable / disconnect each device, one by one, strictly one at a time, until the error has gone. (secondary HDDs, IDE channels, optical drives, USB ports and so on.) Or you can try shuffling resources: first disabling PnP resource assignment in BIOS (forcing non-Plug n Pray). In my experience, generally, certain resources are better not shared in win9x (IRQ 11, 14, 15 etc.) unless unavoidable. For me, on several machines, VGA resource conflicts with IDE controllers were the most common, followed closely by LAN controllers against all sort of devices (USB controllers, audio card drivers etc.
  14. Thanks again for the clarification, this is bad news, as almost all my files exceed 4 GiB size... I have to install another OS to handle them, I guess.
  15. I said that because I have a replica 7600GS and a 8600GT. No probs whatsoever. So far...(6 months). I hope as well the card wont blast off the doors either in its urgent need to testify for its makers hard-earned bad reputation
  16. Thanks! ...so, a kernel fix is needed for that. I'll try to find the appropriate one.
  17. Greetings everyone, has anybody come across such phenomena: by a lot of effort, I managed to set up win98se to support an NTFS drive (a 160 GB IDE drive, one partition, formatted under XP SP3). I use NTFS for Win98 Pro 2.0 (Paragon and all others failed for me, either by not detecting the drive/partition or crashing the OS.) The Question: Is there some kind of file size limit, inherent to win9x, regarding certain operations on NTFS partitions? Each time I open a large file -above 4 GB in size-, win9x freezes, no matter which application I use. (Soundforge, video editors, Total Commander etc.) I think this is the exact same problem why I cannot seek in large video files in either VLC nor Media Player Classic. These files are usually in MKV format and the seek bar works only at the beginning, lets say, up to the one-eight part of the video... after that, it rewinds completely, putting the seek cursor automatically to the start of file. I tried several video splitters, codecs for H264 videos to no avail, yet. Any suggestions?
  18. Okay, thanks both of you for the replies. I think I can live with the shutdown error problem if it works otherwise. If it will fail completely with win9x, I still can re-sell the card. I will post about the outcome in about two weeks' time. Who knows, it might help others in such a decision. These unbranded replica cards are sold for a song these days, and are surprisingly well assembled, of fair quality components. Definitely worth a try for me.
  19. Hello everyone, If anyone with a similar PC ever had success running win9x, please give some hint: K8NSC mainboard (nforce 3 250gb chipset) 2 GB RAM (already using the RAM limitation patch by RLoew) AND nvidia 7950 GT -AGP- video card with 512 MB RAM (I'm planning to buy it, unfortunately I cannot test it beforehand that's why I am asking around.) Thanks a lot in advance for your help. J.
