  1. A) Most problems are fixed with a clean install which I can't explain why but it's true. (Most people who complain installed it on top of their old version) B) Most problems are ONLY a result of the Windows Firewall being turned on. Obviously a lot of programs that use the internet are going to have 'problems' now that a firewall is installed. C) A lot of programs with legitimate issues have been fixed. D) Most other 'broken' programs can be fixed in a matter of minutes just people would rather go on to (other) forums and whine about how SP2 stinks instead of trying to fix them. I have SP2 running on all 4 computers on my network and not one of them has had even the slightest problem. Trust me...if you're saavy enough to make an unattended cd you'll be able to handle anything that SP2 throws at you (and it doesn't throw much).
  2. The stickies at the top of the page have tons of switches. I've personally never run into one that was listed and hasn't worked. Also you can run the installer in the command line and use the /? switch to get a list of all the switches for that particular installer. Also you realize that with SP2 you won't need to worry about hotfixes, IE6, WMP9, etc. Right?
  3. First of all Sun made Java so it's the real deal. Microsoft made an awful, awful VM which is full of bugs and security problems and isn't fully compatible with the official VM. If you want Java content on your computer there's only one choice: Sun's JRE 1.4.2_05 which should get updated in around Oct to 1.5.0 (yay!).
  4. I don't see this help file. Could someone perhaps post some...I'm just trying to figure out what, if anything, xplode can do to make my install better. Edit: Nevermind. I found some while browsing through the archive.
  5. Actually I had downloaded that earlier today thinking it might help but I couldn't exactly figure out how to use it to acheive what I wanted to do. (with the exception of Notepad as the default editor) Perhaps you could explain how to use it to do some of these things? Thank you.
  6. Ok I was wondering how customized you've gotten your unattended IE to be. I've been fiddling with Regshot for the past couple of hours trying to get it but it keeps coming out all wrong. In particular I'm looking to do a few things. Adjust positions and size of the toolbars (Links bar, address bar, buttons bar, file bar) Change the current toolbar buttons. Change the button size Change the button label settings Change the default html editor to notepad Disable annoying (mostly one-time) messages. An example of this would be the one that tells you if you're entering or leaving a secure area or the one that first tells you of the information bar (SP2). I've almost successfully done some of these but they almost always screw with Windows Explorer too (which I don't want to do). Anyone successfully tackle any of these problems?
  7. Actually you're quite right. I just did a test and it worked. All you need is: [RegionalSettings] LanguageGroup=7 This installs support for Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
  8. Have you or anyone else figured out how to automatically install support for reading say Japanese characters? I asked about it in another thread but never got a response.
  9. Let's say you were, for example, to go to www.tv-tokyo.co.jp it would ask you if you'd like to install support for the Japanese language. I'd like this to be done automatically during the Windows installation. Is it possible?
  10. I think the resolution problem is because you have the line "ConfigureAtLogin=1" My display code looks like this: [Display] BitsPerPel=32 Xresolution=1024 YResolution=768 Vrefresh=75 and I don't get any prompts. As for the Automatic Updates screen I can't get it to go away either.
  11. Please don't use the MS JVM. It is a complete piece of crap. I can't believe it's still floating around and people are still using it. As a Jave developer it pains me.
  12. I added the .NET Framework using the methods outlined here: http://unattended.msfn.org/xp/applications/netframework.htm The SP2 one is no different than the downloadable 1.1 framework. As far as I know you can't access that folder unattended.
  13. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;827072 This is good. I'll try this one. Unfortunately gamehead200's method did not work on the real thing. I'm not sure why exactly but no matter what I did it couldn't find the name of the user.
  14. It's more than just that. the MS JVM was a bastardized version of Sun's JVM. It doesn't fully comply to Java standards and has tons of security flaws. As a java devolper I insist that you get the Sun JVM. It's newer, better, authentic, and safer.
  15. Anyone have one for changing the default HTML editor to Notepad? (The setting is in Internet Options programs tab) Thanks.
  16. Well I just added an account called Test and made a batch to try it out. It seemed to work just fine (with the quotes - probably w/o too). Hopefully it'll work just as fine during the real thing. Thanks!
  17. Anyone know how to remove the ASP.NET user account created by the .NET Framework? I remember seeing something about it during my many searches but I can't for the life of me find the answer. Thanks in advance.
  18. Apparently I don't. I tried doing the following: ;Disable hide inactive tray icons" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] "EnableAutoTray"="0" ;Disable "On resume, display welcome screen" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] "ScreenSaverIsSecure"="0" but it doesn't seem to work. I tried using Regshot to find the key it was modifying but it was modifying something in the HKEY_USERS folder and I was under the impression that you can't use that folder for tweaks because they're different each time. Am I wrong? What's going on here? While I'm at it I'm also trying to disable personalized menus in the classic start menu. I haven't tested it yet but here's what I have: ;Disable Personalized Menus [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced] "IntelliMenus"=dword:00000000 Think that will work? Just for the record I'm doing these tweaks during the T-13/12 step of the install not in the GuiRunOnce. Thanks for your help.
  19. Alright I think I got it. For the record this is what I found: ;Disable "On resume, display welcome screen" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] "ScreenSaverIsSecure"="0"
  20. Ok thanks everyone. Only one left. I was gonna get RegShot when I first started reading the thread. Then since I only needed three more I figured it'd be easier. I'll go give it a shot now though.
  21. Thanks prathapml And neophyte is that the post with the 79 or so pages? Because I've been looking through that thing for hours now. I'm tired
  22. Phew I've been searching these forums for hours now. Ok here's what I need: Set IE homepage to about:blank Disable "On resume, display welcome screen" (it's located in the screen saver tab of the display properties) Also one to always enable the Windows Explorer status bar would be great. Thanks for your help.
  23. Yeah I've double and triple checked a few times now. It seems like Virtual PC is capturing some sort of cache of the image (because at one point OEM was set to no). Instead of mounting the image with Virtual PC I mounted the virtual drive Daemon created and it recognizes the difference. I have a feeling that if I restarted my computer things would be working ok but I have a few important downloads going right now. Ah well problem solved one way or the other. Thanks though.
  24. Ok so I have this ISO C:\WXPFPP_EN.ISO that I created. I load it with Daemon Tools and go check the winnt.sif In the [unattended] section I see OemPreinstall=Yes. Good. Now I tell Virtual PC 2004 to load the same image. I check my winnt.sif and it says OemPreinstall=No. So I double checked my files on my hard drive and remade the image and did the whole scenario again and...same thing! So now I'm just really, really confused. Has this happened to anyone else before???
  25. Well I have a test pc to work with and a stack of about 400 blank CD's so I'm just going with the real method. I'd love to do the virtual but getting the programs and figuring out how to use them is too much right now. I'm sorta pressed for time at the moment but later on this week I'll look into that alternative more. Thanks for the advice.
