nLite has the option of making ISOs with internal code or using mkisofs to do the job. Tell it to use mkisofs instead.

^ since when is Media Player 11 and the HighMAT stuff critical updates? I have a ton of other "optional" files that were downloaded with WUD that are not critical files.
-
It does violate WGA as most of the updates it downloads are only available to genuine copies of the OS. Not bashing, just saying.

They didn't diable it. They put an artificial limitation in place. Some people go and upgrade their OS to support programs/games/utilities that work just fine on the prior OS. MS have been sued for things like this in the past and you'd think they'd learn their lesson by now. There are even some XP only programs that will install and run on 98/ME just fine.

Stick With DirectX 10 Or Go Back To DirectX 9.0c?
MrCobra replied to adrian2055's topic in Windows Vista
You'll need to install DX9.0c in Vista for the games that require certain (newer) DX9 components. Installing version 9 in Vista will not get rid of version 10. -
It's not slow file copies that's the problem. I never had a problem with that. While copying files between drives Vista had an out of memory error on file copy process. The Superfetch failed to release memory back to the system when it was needed. That was the big turn off for me; that and other annoying things.

It seems like you should actually read up on the history between Apple and Microsoft. Almost all of the GUI components of Windows was licensed from Apple. If you want to get technical about it, Apple is the one who copied the concept and design of thier early UI from Xerox. Apple has also copied various designs from OS/2. Nothing about Apple is original and Steve Jobs is not god no matter what you may think. Here's a news flash as well....Apple does not design thier H/W either. All designs are done by other companies and all parts inside of a Mac are standard PC parts.

Go with XP until the major bugs in Vista are fixed. I had to switch back to XP because the new memory manager failed to release memory back to the system when doing a file copy. Out of memory error popped up when copying 50 megs worth of stuff. That and all the little quirks and inconsistancies of the OS. SP1 BETA doesn't seem like it does much to improve things atm.

Adobe CS3 Master Collection setup w/serial?
MrCobra replied to jellyhead's topic in Application Installs
(This is what works for me) Automatically enter your serial number during installation process. 1.) Create a blank text file using (e.g.) Notepad 2.) Ctrl+c/v or type the following: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <Configuration> <Payload> <Data key="Serial" protected="0">1234xxxx5678yyyy4321zzzz</Data> <Data key="Registration">Suppress</Data> <Data key="EULA">Suppress</Data> <Data key="Updates">Suppress</Data> </Payload> </Configuration> 3.) Save as "application.xml.override" 4.) Put it into "payloads\AdobeMasterCollectionSuiteen_US_volume\" (or equivalent) 5.) Run setup.exe and have fun. Replace 1234xxxx5678yyyy4321zzzz above with your install code. -
5.9 - not that the score Vista gives really amounts to anything. It's nothing more than a marketing ploy any way.

The 2 processor limit is for the number of physical sockets on the board not the number of cores per chip. It's a maximum of physical CPUs sockets.

What do you think was done with Vista and Server 2008? Both of those are essentially rollups of a previous code base.

Microsoft Windows 98 to recognize Dual-Core processors (project?)
MrCobra replied to ohmss006's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Well, when you become the owner of this site then you can make all the rules you want about who can post where. Until that happens, STFU. -

Great, another NT fanboy has come to troll our forum. Go away. Very childish. -
what account do you use in Win XP. Administrator or User?
MrCobra replied to Grig182's topic in Windows XP
I use a "user" account for normal day to day stuff. If I need admin access for thing I run those as such or go over to the full admin acct to do the things I need to at that time. Standard user may be a PITA for some but restricted access to key parts of the OS is, IMO, better than running wide open. -
Microsoft Windows 98 to recognize Dual-Core processors (project?)
MrCobra replied to ohmss006's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I would say that without the source to the 9x kernel and all the modules that interface to and from it, it would be impossible to get multi-cpu/core support. It could in theory be done if someone wanted to undertake the task of doing it but IMO that would be pointless. If you need multi-cpu/core support from the OS then I think it's time to update your OS. IO.SYS is the bootstrapper for the 9x systems. It is also required for the normal operation of the OS. Load Softice and do a trace on the make directory routine. After some extensive tracing you'll wind up back in the DOS system at the mkdir routine. All version of the 9x kernel rely on DOS to process most things. -
Microsoft Windows 98 to recognize Dual-Core processors (project?)
MrCobra replied to ohmss006's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Windows was never rewritten during any point in developement. During the time of the great Microsoft and IBM divorce, Microsoft took the code it was working on for OS/2 and renamed it Windows NT. That's why you can still use OS/2 1.x and 2.x apps on XP/Vista today. It's all verifiable online too. In any event, the 9x line was rightfully killed and for good reasons. -
UAC may be for "some" protection, but it was mainly implimented to force developers to code thier apps for standard users and not assume everyone is an administrator. OT: 1. Fix the inconsistency’s in the UI and get rid of the blacked out areas that don't get displayed. (sound control in the tray) 2. Bring back H/W accelerated sound. 4 Fix the bugs in the file management routines. It's not very reassuring when you try to copy 50 megs worth of files only to have it go so super slow or just give up and present you with an out memory error box. Maybe Superfetch should actually release some of that memory back when it's actually needed? I WENT BACK TO XP BECAUSE OF THIS. 5. Fix UAC. Why should I have to elevate to create a folder and then have to reelevate yet again just to rename that same folder. Why not allow the create and rename in the same process. Why should users have to elevate just to VIEW the control panel settings? Why should users have to elevate in the first place just to be able to get in and chage an account specific item? 6. Get rid of the really old stuff (POSIX & OS/2, Windows 1.x, 2.x support) and clean house a bit. 7. See #3

Features and Services Harvest User Data for Microsoft - From your mach
MrCobra replied to Rudi1's topic in Windows Vista
I wouldn't go that far but there are privacy concerns. Just because the EULA says they don't do anything with the info doesn't mean they don't and if they didn't they would have no reason to collect any information at all. Microsoft told the public that WGA doesn't phone home or transmit any info at all but when it was found out that it actually did MS was quick to back-pedal on the subject. It's the same with the error reports they want you to send to them that aren't supposed to collect any identifiable info. Go through the steps of letting it gather the error info next time but leave the the confirmation box open and then go look at what "non-identifiable" info is actually put in that report. -
I use Photoshop and have since its early days.

Aero is DX9 based. DX10 isn't used in the desktop manager.
-
That's not entirely true. The Explorer.exe files were interchangable on the 9x systems. Explorer from XP works in 2003. I don't use Vista anymore so I cannot say whether Explorer from XP works on it or not. It may work as a file browser but most likely not as the desktop.
-
My advise, go back to XP.

nLite will not work with Vista until is coded to do so. Until the WIM format is supported nLite will ony work with the versions of Windows that it already works with.
