  1. You could also try setting your TEMP & TMP environment variables to point to another drive so the installer will use another drive. I have a 30 gig drive set aside just for such occasions.
  2. Just disable those that you don't use. There may come a day when you need certain functionality and can't use it.
  3. Deep Freeze is not as secure as Faronics claims. There are "unfreeze" programs that can bypass the lockdown.
  4. Socket F is for dual sockets. More specifically the AMD 4x4 setups. I have the ASUS L1N64-SLI board running 2 Barcelona chips and I love it. While it's true that most software/games doesn't support dual core very well, let alone 4 or more, Windows can and does take advantage of 8 cores. Recent titles and those that are coming out will provide better support. The price of the dual socket boards aren't any more expensive than other top of line boards.
  5. Just get the one that has the highest core and memory speeds.
  6. Have you tried Elements 6 yet? There are some issues with CS3 as well as any other software that's made. Something as complex and as large as Photoshop is will have bugs. Overall, CS3 is a nice update from CS/CS2. I just wish Bridge would have been better than what it is. I really miss the fast file browser in CS. If you have the $$$ to layout for this program then I definitely suggest CS3. I think it has an overall better "feel" to it and has some nice features. I know it's a short writeup, but I see nothing in the program yet that would make me want to stop using it.
  7. I'm a smoker (sadly) and I hate being around people that smoke. If I feel the need to light up outside, I do so well enough away from people and downwind from them. I don't smoke in my house either. Having an unhealthy habit is one thing, but please be considerate of others. I'm down to less than 15 smokes a week. Now if I can make it to zero...
  8. The version of DX9 on Vista is a different beast compared to 9.0c. For all games/apps that require 9.0c you WILL need to install it on your vista machine. It won't actually install 9.0c, just the the extra files that are not included in Vista to begin with.
  9. Uhm, I have only one version of DirectX on my PC and that's version 9.0c. I don't see what the big deal about keeping it updated is because when you install a game that needs whatever was added to a revision is just going to get installed by that game anyway.
  10. I mainly program in assembly language and (sometimes) use C/C++ as a wrapper. I hate software bloat.
  11. May as well vote since it was revived for some reason. Windows ME was the worst piece of crap for the 9x line that MS ever made. I also place an unofficial vote for Vista. Since the poll is about Windows, why is DOS 6.22 listed?? My major gripe with Vista was the out of memory error while copying files. A few (harsh) words were exchanged with a MS tech support person last February over it. Everything out of Redmond implies that every problem with Vista is the fault of the user and that what I experienced was not a bug but my own fault. It's funny how they release a patch for a major bug that didn't exist.
  12. OP: Your key will work on either version. Sad. Just sad. Are these forums becoming Neowin Jr or something? If you didn't like what the OP posted then you could have clicked your back button and not even took the time to reply.
  13. I may be wrong, but as far as I'm aware the search box on the Start menu cannot be removed.
  14. Because they share all the bloat that's in the Vista versions and for another that if you debug through the driver code, it's not very optimized. There used to be a time software/driver developers hand tuned their work for the best possible performance. Sadly those days are long gone.
  15. Thanks for the reference to Steady State. That'll come in handy for a family member that just can't keep from gunking up his PC. I guess I'll start charging him so he gets the message not to do the things he does. Gets old.
  16. No version of ERD will work with Vista. That includes the updated version included in the Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset. I found these for you. I can't vouch for the usability with Vista as I do not run that OS. I hope these can help you. http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ http://www.loginrecovery.com/
  17. Wait until the 9th which is Patch Tuesday or you can search the KB# on Microsoft and get them there.
  18. I still have my model 1,2 and 3. Surprisingly, they still work. The thing I hated most about them is that you had to upgrade all your software if you bought the ram expansions that were sold for them.
  19. I'm partial to the most recent version of Diskeeper. It's set to keep my system continually defragged without my intervention.
  20. Rriigghhtt.....Like anyone on here would actually do that.
  21. I find it easier to disable system restore completely and use a reliable backup program to backup my box every 24 hours. Data that's more critical gets backedup as needed and everything goes on an external drive. Having a bootable "restore" disc also comes in handy.
  22. 64bit is wonderful IMO. A bit more stable and a bit faster than 32bit. I'm just glad that everything I use works perfectly with 64bit (XP x64; I won't touch Vista with a 10 foot pole).
  23. It's also a PITA as well when you get hit by out of memory errors while copying files because Superfetch doesn't release memory back to the system when it should.
  24. Not that I recall. If memory serves me (very well could be wrong), your key is not elegible for 64bit because you used the anytime upgrade option.
