  1. Hi, Am looking for a way to make an app specific Standalone Windows XP (no Internet or LAN support). Can nLite do this? If not am open to suggestions! Thanks Ken
  2. Hi herbalist, Thanks for the suggestions and uplinks. They all worked.
  3. Hi Everyone, So there is No Confusion when I started this post "Am interested in experience and recommendations concerning "registry cleanup software for Windows ME." was not thinking about registry problems due to malware but just all the junk that Windows adds with time. Hoped to find apps that would allow you to record registry when do a "clean install" + all normal apps then after a while would just delete the newer registry with junk and go back to saved early registry? Have found Registry Saver http://www.fridgesoft.de/downloads.php "Creates backups of your registry" Do not know how well this works or if it is better to create an image of "clean install" + all normal apps and use that to reinstall? Ken
  4. Hi herbalist, Thanks for the link. Unfortunately many of the links for papers and software mentioned are not working. Ken
  5. Hi Loblo, Downloaded and installed Oppcomme. Read the instructions at http://classic-web.archive.org/web/20060829073935/www.beta10.com/oppcomme.htm about "PCHEALTH, IS System Restore and System File Protection. And it must be removed first, before you try to remove anything else. If it is not removed first then system file protection will protect the other components from being removed. Once you have removed the other components, then just reinstall PC health if you want" As result when first opened Oppcomme I followed "To USE Oppcom just go to the control panel, click on ADD / REMOVE PROGRAMS, Click on the Windows Setup tab, Double Click on Beta10 Optional Components, And Remove what you don't want." and looked for PCHEALTH but but somehow could not find it. Would you please give instructions where to find PCHEALTH? Thanks Ken
  6. Hi loblo, Is it possible to post Screen Capture(SC) on the forum? If yes tell me know and I will try to post a SC of the Error Message on the forum. Thanks again for all your help Ken
  7. Hi loblo, Thanks for the Oppcom link. Recently came across "Creating extremely small Windows Me" http://www.mombu.com/microsoft/alt-microsoft-windows-me/t-creating-extremely-small-windows-me-1055254.html was told that is really is not WinME but essentially DOS? What do you think? Ken
  8. Hi loblo, "Regseeker is a good one but you need to add this line: 2|SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\VarLDID to the exclude.ini file otherwise it'll break your Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/Windows Setup applet." Thanks. Will do. Ken
  9. My old laptop has some start up errors. Did some reading and seems may be due to deleted "software reminants " causing an error message which is annoying. http://www.everythingcomputers.com/pc_startup_trouble.htm Before resorting to a "clean install" thought would try to solve the problem. Question: Is unchecking All the Startup files in msconfig the same as booting in "Safe Mode"? Thanks Ken
  10. Am interested in WinME user Screen Capture recommendations. Realize it is possible to press the combination [ALT]-[Print Screen] simultaneously and this will capture the window graphics and store it in the clipboard which can be pasted in certain Windows apps. Hope that dedicated Screen Capture Software will add some desirable features. Thanks Ken
  11. Really like the way Windows ME handles USB but do not like all the performance penality with all it's Bloatware. As result would like to get rid of WinME Bloatware and am interested in any suggestions how to do this. Thanks Ken
  12. Am interested in experience and recommendations concerning "registry cleanup software" for Windows ME. Thanks Ken
  13. Am asking for comments specifically about an old laptop with 64MB RAM and WinME. Would like to run some DOS educational software on it. Is it best to reboot to DOS or just run DOS from within WinME? If there is little or no difference it would seem to be a lot easier and less time consuming not to have to reboot each time change from WinME to DOS. Hope someone else has actually had to change from Windows to DOS and has some preferences. Thanks Ken
  14. Update WinME is booting and shutting down OK after did password removal. Only thing that remains is the Password Log Off Icon which I have been unable to delete using the standard Win9x right click delete method. Any suggestions? Thanks again Ken
  15. submix8c & herbalist, Success! Thanks again for all your help! After my last post was given the suggestion to try a "Live Linux CD" and received an Ubuntu CD to try. Did just that but somewhere in the process it stopped so 2nd tried the Win98 Rescue Boot Floppy. Was able to get to C:Windows and run command del *.pwl and then rebooted but got same login screen so I did something wrong. My 3rd attempt was to try to boot WinME and by some means was able to! Exactly how do not know except the original owner was having problems so had been using selective startup. Believe all I did was to press enter at logon screen and it booted. Previously I had either used the original password or just gave up when did not remember or find the written password. In WinME used search and found 2 *.pwl files. As submix8c mentioned there was "DEFAULT.PWL" and the specific *.pwl Deleted both and then followed password removal instructions at ehow http://www.ehow.com/how_6802143_remove-windows-password-screen-windows.html Before rebooting WinME decided to save the Non WinME drivers with Free "Driver Magician Lite" http://www.drivermagician.com/Lite.htm incase I needed to do a "clean WinME install. Forgot to mention that in ~ 11 yrs the original laptop owner lost all the Compaq software CDs. I have a WinME OEM CD but not for a laptop so nice to have all the non standard drivers before wiping the old WinME. Rebooted and the laptop is starting OK with "No Password Screen". Hopefully these posting will be helpful to anyone with this problem. Thanks again for all your comments! Ken
  16. Would like to backup my WinME laptop drivers before trying a clean install. Any recommendations concerning Free Driver Backup Apps that work with WinME? Normally I use Double Driver but it is only for WinXP and newer. Thanks Ken
  17. Rick, Thanks again for your directions! Have a 98 boot floppy so will give it a try and let you know. Ken
  18. Thanks everyone for your comments! "If all you need is access to the system in "normal mode" and are not concerned about other stored passwords, Boot to Dos, navigate to the Windows folder, then delete or rename all files with the extension ".PWL". There's normally one for each user. Reboot, and you'll be able to log in without a password. Rick" Correct. Forgot to mention there was only 1 user. Question: In Windows I can search for "PWL". My DOS is very poor, so as a DOS beginner how do I do this in DOS? Remembered I can use WildCard * did quick search and found " For Unix or DOS, you can use the wildcard search in the command line to list all the files with a particular extension. For example, if you want to find all the files that end with .old, in DOS you could enter your search as follows: dir *.old" http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahsf.html Just to make sure I am doing this correctly, would I go from C: to C:Windows and in Win dir use "*.pwl" for the search ? In the above example that I found is the search from C:? In this case would I use at the C: prompt "Windows*.pwl" ? Would be simpler than the way I was taught. Thanks again everyone for your help! Ken
  19. Last year I inherited a Compaq Laptop(LP) with P3 cpu, 64MB RAM and WinME and had LogOn Password(LOP). At that time I tried the LP and every thing was OK but forgot to either change the LOP or eliminate it. A few days ago I was finally able to start playing with it (would like to use for portable Word Processing) but could not find the original LOP. Checked with the original owner but they did not remember either. Before getting upset decided to check if the RAM and Hard Drive are good. Ran Memtest and some Hard Drive tests and it passed all. From this I know the LOP is WinME only. DOS boots and runs apps OK. Did a quick search for DOS Password Recovery Software but did not find anything. Hope may have missed something. Am interested in any suggestions. Thanks Ken
  20. Recently did my first successful WinXP nLite install. When checked the Windows Directory I noticed that there were a number of empty dirs (addins, AppPatch, Cursors, Help, ime, Installer, java, Media, msagent, msapps, mui, pchealth, PeerNet, srchasst, Temp). Am wondering what I should have done so these empty folders were not created. Did a forum search but got No results found for "empty windows dorectories". Thanks Ken
  21. Would like to use nLite to reduce WinXP so it can replace WinME on an older Laptop. This Laptop will have No Net or Internet connection and only be used for Word Processing. Hope some others have already done something similar and would share suggestions. Thanks Ken
  22. As beginner am looking for simple apps that will allow me to install WinXP from a USB. After much searching found Win2flash http://wintoflash.com/home/en/ Has anyone tried it? Would be interested in any comments. Am also interested in any other easy to use apps that can install WinXP from a USB. Thanks Ken
  23. Hi jaclaz, Thanks for correcting my post. Is it possible to transfer my question to http://www.msfn.org/...ndows-from-usb/ or do I need to redo? Ken
  24. Am still a beginner. Would like to use the nLite ISO with USB Boot software. Appreciate any tips on USB Boot software that works with nLite ISOs. Thanks Ken
  25. Hi Everyone, Tried to install Net Framework 2 SP1 so I could then install nLite 1.4.9.1 but got error message after it looked like everything had installed. "NET Framework 2.0 SP1 has encountered a problem during setup. Setup did not complete correctly." Should add, I had Net Framework 2.0 already on my PC and did not uninstall it before trying to install NF 2 SP1. Also, I used a Screen Capture to save Error Signature and Error Report Contents which will post if am told where to. Hope someone who has had this problem has been successful in installing NF 2 SP1. Thanks KenO
