  1. Hello, A 2TB USB WD hard drive was working as charm. After 3 months of not using it, it began to show some slow performance. Now, it takes like 20 minutes to show all of the partitions. However, the first partition (the only one with important data) became inaccessible. I tried to scan the desk using chkdisk in windows but it says that it cannot do a scan on it. Then tried MiniTool Partition, it can see the files in the corrupted partition but has no option to restore them, I tried to fix the partition or surface scan it, after waiting a while the software hangs. I bought a new 2TB USB WD (yes I have a twin now) hoping I can clone the corrupted one, retrieve the important data and then return it back to WD (Still in warranty). Still no luck with HDD Raw copy tool, it says that it cannot lock the 'source' drive. I tried a bunch of software for recovery of partition/data but none worked...they either hang or do not work. Any suggestions? Note: The corrupted drive has WD locker; i.e. when you plug the USB it works fine (not slow) showing only one partition to unlock the desk. Once you unlock it takes 20 min. or so for the partitions to be recognized (except the important corrupted one). Thanks in advance, Ahmad
  2. Yes, I agree that the author made great job there but talking about the interface .....It's horrible . Besides there are no HELP notes to guide you through the program. Sorry, it's just my opinion. Thanks for the link. I cooled it down (not in the refrigerator of course ) and it's still RAW. Currently reading: http://docs7.chomikuj.pl/81583362,0,0,Victoria-for-Windows-v4.pdf and will post back results.
  3. I burned the recovery DVDs before anything to avoid repeating the tragedy of the recovery partition. I recovered my whole system using those DVDs on my new HDD. Back to the situation, while imaging the HDD in chunks as suggested the computer suddenly hang. I had to force a SHUTDOWN. Now, The HDD is no longer readable as before. "Disk Managment" reports the primary partition (584GB) as a "RAW" partition and needs to be formatted. Apparently, its only getting worse. I'm giving up recovering anything from it now. So I turned to use Victoria and tried to locate the bad sectors. I found a very LOUSY GUI with no idea what to do.
  4. Well, no, this can be a temporary storage while recovering, but at the end you need to re-compose a "monolithic image". I hate blaming others, but it was your idea to "re-compose" the image. How can you tell me to walk through then say it's the wrong way? Also, then, Looks paradoxical to me. What is it what you need?? a one full image? or small pieces of .dd files?
  5. Hi there, I'm back again. It took about 3 days for the first 350Gb to be imaged. The resulted image is 333GB in size!! No. of last sector with errors in reading was: 192a740c00 (=108086430720 in decimal) So theoretically, 512* 108086430720 = 55340252528640 bytes = 51539GB ? or is it that the size of a single sector is not 512 bytes? I want to know the space to be deleted from the disk to reduce the probability of bad sectors spreading. I'm proceeding now with the other 300GB. I may then borrow a 1TB HDD to combine the two parts and proceed with the recovery process. The problem is that I have no idea how to combine the two parts together. I'd like to note that I'm not doing this to restore my data (I already did). I have three reasons for doing this: 1) Increase experience in dealing with hardware bad sectors. 2) Use the GOOD part of the disk and turn it into a USB HDD which then can be used to store UNimportant data, transfer data from a computer to another,...etc. 3) It'd be a wonderful feeling recovering data you thought they were lost forever.
  6. Being curious, I left datarescue work. It stopped reporting the read error message from 12 hours (yes, it has not finished yet!!)....Is that normal? or should I restart the whole process again? Pausing and resuming the process had no effect. I can still feel the HDD spinning and see the LED flashing!!
  7. Seems like I'm out of options here. I neglected the standards, as usual, and tried the process of "Copy and Paste". IT WORKED, not 100% but I was able to restore most of my important data. Other data can be downloaded AGAIN from the internet (although I spent days downloading and arranging them before). Yes it's a pain.. but easier than what the green men want to do. BTW, the Toshiba utility I mentioned before is called : "HDD Protection". A live 3D HDD viewer comes with it. It shows a spinning HDD which leans when you lean the laptop. I'm thinking now to use Victoria directly on the HDD.. I mean, What else could happen? Anyway, I appreciate your help jaclaz . I'm travelling to Europe soon, maybe I should visit Italy to see those green men of yours who can fix all of your problems, I'll bring the HDD with me. Thanks.
  8. Well, no, this can be a temporary storage while recovering, but at the end you need to re-compose a "monolithic image". Isn't there a way to compress the image? The new HDD is 500Gb, the USB HDD is 500Gb the dead HDD is 640Gb.!!!
  9. mmmmm.... I see. I'm using datarescue now to image the HDD. It's reporting a lot of: [Read error at (sector no.). Data error (Cyclic Redundancy Check).] I'm dividing the image into two pieces: one on my new HDD and the other on my USD HDD. Looks like it'll take ages to complete the imaging process. But what after creating the image? Double click on the .dd file and I'll be free to open and browse?
  10. First of all, Thanks for your fast reply and sorry for my delayed one. My laptop fell on its edge on the floor from a height of about 50cm. Is that considered a bad hit? Also, TOSHIBA has this software that senses any vibrations and lifts the head once a certain level of vibration is detected (up to my knowledge). Plus, I have found my partitions and folders and browsed through them using "Testdisk". So your assumption of "Head Crash" may not be right after all!! Maybe I am just giving my self fake hope to fix this, but it helps. Before we play around with the disk, what would be the most efficient way to backup all data? I don't wanna lose my data AGAIN!!. I have a 500 GB USB drive for that purpose. Yes, but they can be disappeared reducing the size of the disk. That's what I am intending to do: Make them INVISIBLE . I am looking for a good new SSD. One last question: Why didn't the "tick tick tick tick" sound appear again?
  11. Hello, My laptop "TOSHIBA A665-S6094" was working good until it had a bad fall on the floor. Directly after the fall I began to hear a sound coming from the harddisk "tick tick tick tick" in a very fast manner. I restarted the computer and the OS didn't load. I booted form a win7 dvd and tried to repair using the repair option. After about 15 minutes of searching for installed microsoft OS, it came up with a message saying that it found some errors and to fix I must restart. However, when I click restart and repair it shows another error message saying that it can't add the entry "win7 recovered" to the booting options. Trying to manually fix this issue, I opened a cmd (still in the "repair" screen in win7 dvd) and tried the chkdsk command. I want to clarify here that I used "Gparted" software which showed that only one partition from the three partitions on my harddisk has bad sectors. It told me that to resize the partiton with badsectors I have to run the chkdsk command then restart the computer TWICE. My hard disk is partitioned as follow: 1) SYSTEM --> (hidden) around 1 GB "Don't remember exactly" 2) C: --> around 500 GB containing everything (OS-My work- even the bad sectors:() 3) Recovery partition --> also hidden, around 11 GB Back to the chkdsk command, it did fix some bad clusters, removed some invalid indexes and added others. Then, in stage 4 of 5, it stopped at sector 15 ( and 12% of the whole scan). I canceled the scan after waiting about 20 hours with nothing new. I am asking for software that can locate and isolate bad sectors or some software to locate and other to isolate. I remember that I have done something similar a long time ago: used a software to locate bad sectors, apply some multiplications to know the exact location of the sector in bytes then use any partitioning tool to delete that part containing badsectors and make it unformatted. But I really don't remember that software and I think it was designed for WD hard disks only. NOTE: I didn't hear that "tick tick tick tick" sound again.
  12. Hello, I was using the removable USB hard drive on linux. Instead of using safe remove I choose EJECT. When it was unmounted I removed the USB from the rear of the PC (at that moment I sensed the Disk was spinning) and since then problems began. The USB disk became too slow. Linux (Fedora) reports( after about 3-4 minutes from mounting the disk) hard disk failure, that some sectors are being dislocated and something about mapping. In MS windows, it also takes a long time to be visible. looking into the "Devices and printers" window an exclamation mark is placed on "My Passport" device saying that " the driver for WD SES Device USB Device is not installed". Choosing "Apply this fix" does not fix the problem. Also, while copying data to the USB device it sometimes hangs for 3-4 minutes then it may resume the copying process. The writing speed is normal at about 18 to 24 MB/sec. That was the problem. I have done some trials to fix the problem but still no results: 1- I quick formatted the device 2- Updated its firmware 3- tried to format it with not checking the "quick format" box, but after waiting about 2 hours it said that it can't complete. 4-I zeroed the disk using the "clean all" command in DiskPart then created a partition and formatted it (NTFS) 5- I scanned the disk for bad sectors using HDD regenerative and the disk was clean(no bad sectors). I don't know anymore if this is a software or a hardware problem. Any ideas on how to restore the disk to function properly?
  13. Thanks for the explanation...I finally got it
  14. Hello, A Computer with fedora13 and windows7 dual boot is needed to be imaged. The image should contain all files in both OS plus the partition table information in order to restore the whole system to its original state whenever it is needed. Is there such a program? Can Norton Ghost do that if linux file system was ext3?
  15. Yes they are vista based machines. I'll try SteadyState and see if it works fine. About WDS and MDT, it sounds a nice solution but the problem is that the machines always(not sometimes) get infected. I was wondering if orders can be given to each machine not to open any flashdisc before being scanned by the server!
  16. Hello there.. I'm managing a student lab with about 25 computers. There are 2 major problems: First is the destructive behviour of students who intentionally delete, edit, or even break down the whole operating system. Of course fixing that will be only momentarily, it'd be only a matter of time before the system to collapses again. Second is the infected USB sticks used by students. The infection spreads out causing the lab to be a "virus lab". Because of the successive lab sections there is only a limited time available every week to clean up the computers to be reliable again. To overcome that, large effort has to be done and a lot of time is wasted. I'm looking for a way to effeciently control the lab and saving it from viruses and those annoying students. Specifications: Most of the computers have core2due proccesors and only five of them have pentium4. The core2due machines have wirless NIC and the lab is eqquiped with an access point. Only a limited number of programs is required on each machine (Matlab, Xilinx and some other engineering programs) The students are to have the ability to : open these programs("ONLY" would be preferred), save/open their work on the machine and access the internet. One of the solutions was DeepFreeze but it didn't work because students actually broke it. I need a solution that may require some effort now but saves me alot of time later. The one that i'm thinking of now is using ActiveDirectory but I still don't know if it'd be suitable to my case cause I don't know anything about it yet. Anyother ideas?
  17. Ok.....I was waiting for a time that I can gather more info about the problem..... The recovery partition has been made using Acronis true image.... I looked in "computer management" and I saw the recovery partition there safe and sound.... For the other untouched computers, it doesn't tell you to press the F11 button to start recovery....you just should know. I've tried F11 on the computers with the mentioned issues and it didn't respond.
  18. In the sticky topic I was only able to burn the recovery disks. Doing a recovery from the recovery disks returned the Fxx function to work. I don't have the recovery disk option here. I believe that the recovery partition still exists because all the playing was in the C partition. Nobody came near to the recovery partition. But let's say that the recovery partition was formatted, can't I copy it from the other identical computers?? This is what I need: How can I completely copy a hard disk with everything related "MBR, sectors, partition tables, ....etc." to another hard disk???? EDIT: Or you were saying that I should write my new problem as a post in the sticky one??
  19. Hello, Once upon a time there was a student lab which purchased 30 computers with vista OS, a recovery partition and with the complex Fxx hotkey for recovery at startup.... Once upon a time there was an engineer (with no experience) -no he's not me -who wanted to install XP on the new computers believing that he will have a dual boot after installing XP. Of course that didn't happen. Now he has FIVE computers with XP ONLY. He installed XP on five computers in a parallel manner. He then wanted to correct his mistake by installing VISTA again. I think he reinstalled VISTA which created a new problem....the activation key. Once upon a time there was an other engineer (from the company which the computers were bought from) who solved the VISTA problem. Now the computers have VISTA OS. He said that everything is fine except that the Fxx hotkey will not work and that we'll not be able to recover the system. He also said that he can't make it work again!!! Once upon a time there was a MSFN user who had no doubts in the MSFN experts. He told them the story asking them to find a solution to return the startup hotkey to work again. I just wanted to ask: if I took the MBR, first sector of C and first sector of recovery partition (which is hidden in our case) from an untouched computer (using Hdhacker) then copy those on the "touched" computers....... will the hotkey return to normal?? Is there any other solutions? NOTE: All computers are identical....
  20. Hello, I'm trying to install windows 7 on a DELL INSPIRON 6400 notebook..... The notebook has an OLD VISTA version..... I had to install SP1 on it for the installation to proceed. However, after installing SP1 the compatibility report said that I have to update the driver of something about IDE : I've searched for that driver over the web, but nothing was found. I decided to ignore that notification and continued installing windows7... Everything seemed to be great until the system rebooted and gave me the code error 0x8007048F After some internet searching I found that: I tried to solve the problem by updating the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" in Device Manager, but nothing worked. How can I solve this problem?? Thanks in advance...
  21. LOL...... I've totally forgotten everything related to that partition. However, thanks to your post, I have 5 OS's now And no......I didn't blow it up. It'd be a shame to blow up something that took too much time to get fixed, so I burnt it!! ...........................on DVDs ofcourse
  22. Am, what do you mean by offline? Do you mean attach the hard drive (slave) to another one (master)?? Unfortunately, the hard drive that we want to recover data from is a notebook's drive.....and we don't want to get our hands dirty doing a surgery in the notebook's organs "Never tried that before" I think he's satisfied with what has been recovered since he didn't call me... However, thanks for your support.....Your info WILL help me in similar situations... Thanks DigeratiPrime & jaclaz ......... You just can't stop solving my software problems
  23. Yes, he had two partitions: 100GB and 20 GB.... However, I just wanted to ask: Can other file oriented recovery applications find what Recuva couldn't?? Or they all are the same??
  24. I have four OS's on my Laptop.....and I can't imagine why somebody would need 10 or more OS's one just one machine Fedora11 (With about 6 kernels...don't ask me why ) Windows 7 (Upgraded from Vista) Windows XP Ubuntu
