  1. It's on my daughter in law's computer that I just upgraded. I looked and looked on the modem properties sheet for some setting that made sense to change. Same with the Network Connections properties. Nothing seems relevant. Maybe I should try a different driver? It's a cheap generic modem and I think I used the vanilla Windows driver. I was hoping someone would say, "Oh, dummy, set the blank to blank to keep that from happening." She has call waiting. Maybe that interacts.
  2. With my new XP Pro, a new problem: when I'm connected to my ISP and someone calls me, the modem hangs up. It never did this with Windows 98, and I've looked for a setting to no avail. Anybody know how to stop this annoying problem?
  3. I'm helping a friend who is having trouble with his system freezing up (not blue screen, just freeze). It reboots fine after a freeze, but we are out of ideas, short of reinstalling all the software. The "repair" option with the XP install disk did not help. Neither did SP-1, although the frequency seemed to decline after installing SP-1. Somewhere I saw instructions on how to overwrite the XP system files without reformatting the hard drive. I remember you selected not to "repair" in the installation dialog, but then I've forgotten what other steps to take. Can anyone help us out here. Any other suggestions on what are the likely causes of random freezes would also be helpful.
  4. Thanks for the welcome. Yes I'll be around. I hope I can contribute as well as benefit from real experts, too. MSFN looks like a great resource.
  5. Perfect!!! Now it opens with the My Documents folder showing but closed. One more nuisance resolved. Hey, thanks so much!
  6. Oh, I only applied the "hidden" attribute to the My Documents folder, not all the subfolders. I need the subfolders to show, but I want them in the C:\...\ path like any other folder.
  7. Tried it. It still shows in Windows Explorer. There is something perverse about this folder
  8. I got the "My Documents" desktop folder out of sight but when I open Windows Explorer "My Documents" is always shown in the C drive root with all the subfolders showing. I never use the darn thing and it is not wanted there. Even if it would just close, like all other well-behaved folders, I would be happy. Anybody know how to supress it or where I can find this info?
