  1. Oh man, that is not what I want to hear. This is a fairly new Abit board (2-3 months) with Raid drives. It would be a major mess to change all that out. Today a new problem: Outlook Express suddenly doesn't want to get mail from one of the pop servers. Just suddenly chokes when trying to retreive mail. Provider says everything is fine on their end. I've set up forwarding so I get mail through another server, but what happened is a mystery. Something here is very unstable.
  2. Yes, I'm the admin. This is one of several little anomalies. I have trouble with the sharing settings for the local network. This computer just won't share in one direction with one other computer. Everything else is fine with sharing. Sometimes when I'm using one specific app (Nero) the machine just decides to reboot. No specific action preceeds the event, the screen just goes dark and then the bios starts up. I think I've got some little problems in the registry. Short of reinstalling the OS I'm stumped. Maybe (like whistling in the dark) SP2 will fix everything for me. Does anyone know if the service packs clean up the registry for any little errors that have gotten in there? ardi
  3. I like to turn my monitor and drives off after 3 minutes. So I go to the power settings and select those options. (standby, hibernate etc are off) All is fine till a day or two later when I notice the screen doesn't shut off. The settings are still correct but it ignores them till I select and apply them again. Very frustrating.
  4. OK, (after a Memorial Day interuption) I set all the computers to have the same user account name and passwords, turned on the guest accounts, edited the reg files (only a couple were set with a "1," where you specified a "0"), rebooted, unshared everything on A, rebooted, shared everything on A again... There were some weird problems with the sharing controls at the drive name level, but I kept messing around, then I shared the main folders in the drive roots, tried again and IT IS WORKING. All directions, all computers. Thanks, BeenThereB4 and Jono. Couldn't have done it without you. I try to keep it real simple, but Windows just makes it tough to do. ============== Now I need the XP forum for a problem with the Power Settings. Then everything will be perfect again (yeah, right!).
  5. I turned all the guest accounts on, rebooted everything. Still no luck. Plot thickens however. I can share files from a different drive, just not the one I want. No share on C drive (operating system and My Documents) no share on D drive (pictures and data I want to move around) and YES sharing works on E (a RAID array I'm experimenting with). So it isn't the whole computer, just the C and D drives. And, as I said, only in the direction of computer A to C.
  6. No, the user names and passwords are different on all of the computers. But I'm not having trouble with the A-B link. Only one way on the A-C link is blocked.
  7. I have a small home network with three computers and they are all running XP. The third computer, call it "C," was just added and I can't share files from A to C. The original sharing between A and B works fine, and I can even move files from B to C. Files can move from C to A, but not A to C. the error message is "...not accessable...may not have permission". Naturally, this is the one link I really care about. I'm using a DLink router and everything else, like Internet connections, work fine. Computer C "sees" the whole net, it just cannot get anything from A. I turned sharing off on A, rebooted, reset the sharing...still no luck. Any ideas? I've been struggling with this one for a month. TIA
  8. It is running so sweet now. I can connect remotely to and from home without a hitch. It's saving me many miles of travel and lots of time. Thanks again to all who responded.
  9. That's good news edg21. Let me ask a couple of questions: Is your Remote Connection made from the dial-up to a static IP, or is it possible to go from a static IP to a dial-up, or even dial-up to dial-up? I think you are saying that you need your dial-up ISP to be a "Dynamic DNS provider." Then the provider would have the means to provide the equivalent of an IP. Man, am I learning a lot on this forum! ardi
  10. Thanks, ggtyh. Your information was very helpful. I typed "port 3389" in the help search, and BANG! You were right on. That's the listening port for remote desktop connection. How the hell did you know that? I gotta find that book you must have read. I can't test this new knowledge for a day or so but I'm closing in on my solution. Thanks again. ardi
  11. It's getting a little clearer. 1. To connect to a computer in my LAN from a remote computer, I use the IP to identify the "computer." Nothing goes in the Domain window. I have to make sure that Remote Connection has been enabled. 2. Since the LAN is behind a router and firewall, I need to forward port 3389. That's probably why I couldn't connect before, even when I used the IP correctly. (I wonder why scankurban said 3128,3129? Should the public/private ports be the same or different, and does the number really matter?) Does anyone know if this will work on a dial up connection? Do dial up connections have static IP's? See how dumb I am? Thanks to everyone for helping. ardi
  12. I have figured out how to use my laptop to run another computer on my local net, but it apparently will also work via the internet. Trouble is, I can't figure out how to address the remote computer. The four lines of the address are: computer, user name, password, domain. User name and password for the remote computer are obvious. "Computer", when using the local net, is just the name I have given the local computer, like "officepc.". When I'm trying to connect via the internet, I've tried the IP to no avail. Should I be adding the ISP's domain, like xx.xx.xx.xx.ISP.com? Or do I use the IP plus the computer's local name, like xx.xx.xx.xx.officepc? Or do I need the local net address too. Or what? Anybody know? I've looked pretty good through the help files, but don't find a thing. TIA, ardi
  13. Fixed!!! No damage This is a new worm, only discovered on May 20. Norton can now deal with it if you have the latest virus definitions. I was just unfortunate to get it before the update was out on the 21st. There is a whole page devoted to it on their site. One lesson learned: I didn't have to edit manually the changes the worm made to my registry. System Restore did it automatically for me. Discovered this while thrashing around trying to fix it myself. Thanks to all who responded with help.
  14. No, I didn't know that would make any difference. I'll try that next. BTW have you heard of this virus? I've never seen Norton defeated like this.
  15. Noton alerts are popping up like mad on my machine. The XP firewall is (and has) been on, but the virus is still here. I can find the infected file that Norton identifies, but it won't delete. This is what Norton says: Virus Alert: Object name: C:Windows\Systen32\wininetd.exe Virus Name: Backdoor.Winet Action taken: Access to file was denied Delete failed So far, it has done no damage that I am aware of, but I need to get rid of it. Suggestions anyone?
  16. If I install a fast new drive, ATA 100 or 133, using an 80 conductor ribbon cable, and put my old drive, ATA 33 or 66, on the slave connector, will I get full speed out of my new drive? The MB says it supports the high speed drive, but I was told by a knowledgeable source that the system will only go as fast as the slowest drive on a cable. To further confuse me, I don't know how to verify the speed of any drive (and I'm talking about data transfer rates, not motor revs). There must be some software that tests them, right? TIA, ardi
  17. Question: Does any know of software that will run continuously and excercise the processor and motherboard in a testing mode? Background: I have a mb/cpu (Shuttle A12A/AMD Athalon 1.1GHz) that was abandoned because a friend had periodic system freeze ups and got frustrated. There were also problems with the video card--it had to be glued into the AGP socket to make it connect properly. (don't laugh, it sorta worked with hot melt glue) I now have a PCI video card to avoid the AGP socket entirely, and everything else, like memory, power supply and hard drive, is also changed out. But before I declare victory I want to test the system. The old problem was very intermittent and unpredictable, so it needs a good test and workout. TIA, ardi
  18. Hmmm. I wonder where I got the goofy idea that you could load the os into memory with a simple setting? Maybe I'm losing it. But I even remembered the memory requirements. Oh well. Regarding partitions on drives, your answer was perfect for me. The straight skinny from a user. Next time I bring up a system I'll set aside 4GB for the os and leave another partition or two for everything else. Thanks ardi
  19. Before I muck about with hours of experimentation, I have two nagging questions about using XP that I'll bet practical people have totally nailed down. 1. Have you ever tried putting the whole operating system in memory? It says it takes 500MB of RAM minimum and then it should run faster. The question is, does it really make any noticable difference and/or does it slow down other programs? 2. Do you partition your hard drives so the operating system is in one partition and programs or data in others? I read that things run faster with partitions, but I've always used one big partition for everything. Is there some strategy that makes any difference? I'm guessing that the differences may be small, but it is just that: a guess. Anyone with experience knows a lot more than my guess. TIA ardi
  20. And I mean thanks to all who responded. Not meaning to leave anyone out, I needed all the help I could get.
  21. Thank you Father Jack wherever you are!!!! w00t I thought I was through with ASPI layers forever, but there they were, lurking in the shadows waiting to bite me. I've built other computers since XP was released and never had a problem. This time, what a nightmare. I really appreciate your your help and suggestions. They really helped me. Thanks
  22. Oh, those damned ASPI things that Adaptec has and MS doesn't. I remember total confusion. ThenI thought WinXP didn't need them. Let's see--the ones I have (for Win2000 I think) are dated 1999. There is a aspi check program and then the application. Think I need to install them?
  23. Yeah, I like Nero best, but when it hung on start up I tried another cheap one. It did the same thing. Does this sound like contaminated code from the first CD? Should I format and reinstall everything (groan!)?
  24. While putting together a computer for my daughter, the CD-RW was unreliable on read. Some disks were read and others (like the disk that came with the drive) not ok. I did get WinXP Pro installed plus the "NTI CD maker" software. Also installed Nero v 5.5. Both burner apps install without incident but fail to start with a vague message that it had to close. So I replaced the burner. This one reads reliably, but burner software will still not run. All Device Manager indications are normal for the drives. I'm totally stumped. Any ideas out there? Thanks.
  25. ****, you guys are good! I'll have her try that tonight. Thanks a lot!
