  1. Okay. That brings it down to a few potential drivers, or applications. Have you managed to boot Vista before? Anyway, boot up on safe mode and try to disable your graphics card driver and your sound card driver. Search for Device Manager in the start menu, and you can work it out from there.
  2. If you have an external HDD plugged in (usually by USB) that can cause a great deal of delay in the boot process, for whatever reason. Try unplugging it if you have one. If not, does the problem still occur in safe mode?
  3. Any more news on steam? I can't say I'm a huge fan of NT at the moment, for many reasons. I would like to see steam back on 98, even if there is only a select bunch of people running it.
  4. I want the interface to be consistent. Just look at all the strange looking windows in vista, some use aero wizards, some use wizard 97 with a vista image at the side. Why? They had enough time to develop the OS. Having consistency with the IE7 parts is fine, if they weren't so hard to get into. Having used vista for a while now I can say that they aren't as bad as when I started. But still... Also, I DON'T want Windows NT 7. To be honest, Windows NT gives the home user too much power to play with. NT is fine for the workstation, but not for the average home user who just wants to put some songs on their iPod and listen to some music while browsing the web. The security flaws are caused by NT being used for tasks it was not designed for. NT is fine for servers and any serious work, but it has too many features that aren't for the home, that cause bloat and can slow the whole operating system down. Next, I want to see Windows 7 be more efficient with my RAM by taking up less of it for what I deem unnecessary tasks. Oh sure, it may be dirt cheap these days, but I still don't have that kind of money, especially with the credit crunch. Don't assume that everyone has spare money to throw at their rigs. I'd love to run vista with all its bells and whistles with 4GBs of RAM, but that's not gonna happen any time soon, because I and many people in the UK (and I'm sure abroad) can't afford 4GBs of RAM. And last of all, bigger is not often better. With these ever-increasing patches and newer files, they are growing out of control. Why? Shouldn't the patches simply replace part of the code? Surely that would make the files the same size, or smaller if they were just removing the offending code? Why does Vista take up around 15GBs? Because of functionality that most people would never use, like the Chinese UI, and tablet PC functionality. There is, of course, the speech control function that people might use, but all this should be selectable in the installer. The installer for Vista is great, really flies, and it's very simple, but a little too simple? I'd rather have control over my OS without having to resort to vlite. I'm sure that Windows 7 will be great, with its use of the ribbon UI and its many projected improvements like faster booting and lower power consumption. I'm excited about it, and hope it's everything that it's cracked up to be.
  5. They can't even speak english, judging from the help sections in the BIOS config. Also, the main thing that bothers me is that when the CPU apparently gets to around 60°C, it starts beeping in a rather annoying way. Some small issues with vista, relating to boot times, which are apparently BIOS related. I did try the old BIOS, but for some reason it was no different. Thanks!
  6. Today, due to an issue I was having with vista (dual-boot) I performed a BIOS update using my copy of MS-DOS 7.1 from windows 98, taking care to avoid any DOS startup programs. So far, so good, but the computer has suddenly decided to incorrectly report my temperature. At startup, after being off for about 20 minutes, my "system temperature" is reported by the BIOS as 120ºC. Now, as you can imagine, this does not inspire confidence in myself, as my feet would be going up in flames at any second. That said, I have checked what I believe is the "system", the PSU, and it is not hot at all, it is freezing cold. Same goes for the CPU, which is at double its normal temperature. Once again, I point out that if this really was true, I would be fleeing for my life on a regular basis, but hey, at least I'd lose a bit of excess fat! Anyway, the annoying bit is that after a while, the PC starts beeping. It is definately related to the temperature, because it only is triggered when the CPU apparently goes to or above 60ºC. Re-flashing the BIOS to an older version didn't work, and I don't want to try using NT to flash it rather than DOS. I wouldn't trust NT with very much. Would anyone know what is going on? Here is my system specs: Motherboard: Jetway K8M8MS (sometimes referred to by its chipset, K8M800) BIOS: Phoenix AwardBIOS CPU: AMD Sempron 2600+ @ 1.6ghz RAM: 512MBs Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6200 I included the last two just in case. Hope somebody can help. By the way, I've been looking around there forums for a while. For 98 resources, there's none finer. Love Autopatcher98 and Revolutions pack.
