recently bought a toshiba staellite A60 notebook. xp home sp2 preinstalled. it takes 36-120 secs to shutdown. i discovered that the setting ClearPageFileAtShutdown = 0 is not staying, but returning to ClearPageFileAtShutdown = 1 after a few restarts. all my other reg tweaks stick. i have tried giving permission to my username to this key in the registry but that is not helping. any ideas ? thank u.

interesting thought...& i think u hit on something. although itz explorer, not Internet Explorer thatz the trouble, i am almost certain that installing internet download manager+crack is what screwed things up - it makes some pretty extensive changes to things. anyway, i restored from a ghost image. all is aok now

i don't have r.exe anywhere. i ran fprot in DOS mode and the DOS version of bitdefender. no infection. i think i'll go back to last week's ghost image. thanx anyway guyz for help...

i have no idea why explorer.exe is usage such a large amount of memory. system is clean. xpsp2. only 2 programs run at startup. any ideas ?

made a slipstreamed unattended xp pro sp2. setup gets to installing devices 34mins to go, screen goes black...end of story. yet the same CD will work fine on my other 2 PCs, but i don't want auto updates, and DCOM, and background intelligence [CIA ?] running all the time. don't need a firewall from MS, or a popup blocker, or forced ,limited TCPIP.SYS connections...in fact evrything that SP2 installs - i disable, so i figured i don't need the BSOD and app errors that SP2 also delivers :-(
